Numbers 25:10–(30:1)* 29:40 This portion tells us the story of Phinehas, the son of Aaron, when he took direct action against an Israelite who had joined with a Midianite woman. As a bit of background, Baalam was unsuccessful in cursing Israel, so he counseled the Midianites to send their sons and daughters to the Israelites to have them join together, leading them astray from Moses’ teaching. Zimri, the Simeonite, was a product of Baalam’s counsel. God had begun to judge Israel with a plague just as Baalam had said. But Phinehas’s action stopped the whole process and brought about deliverance to Israel. The remainder of this portion addresses the final census of Israel, the death of Moses, and the final efforts to enter the promised land. In particular, this portion details the offerings for each day in keeping the Feast of Tabernacles.

This Parsha begins in the aftermath of the plague that killed 24,000 men who had defiled themselves by being joined to Ba’al Peor and culminates in Phineas being rewarded for taking action to execute the couple engaging in perversion at the Tabernacle door. Pinchas/”Phinehas”, covering Numbers 25:10-30:1, provides for us the finishing details concerning Israel’s encounter with Baal Peor that started in the previous parshah of Balak.  In the midst of Israel being dealt with concerning their idolatry, a man of the tribe of Simeon, Zimri, blatantly takes one of the Midianite women in front of the sight of all before the Tabernacle.  Yet Pinchas deals with this rebellion by slaying them both.  At first glance, it seems that this is something quite far removed from where we are today.  Yet by taking a closer look into the names of the individuals involved here, you’ll find that the house is still having to deal with the same sin in the camp.  But there’s still a covenant of peace that’s available to partake in, if we’ll be like Pinchas and follow his example!
