As All Time Top Ten's glorious Season 5 winds down, it's time for another installment of our favorite annual tradition. Sir Dustin Prince returns as our resident cover songs specialist and we knock out another list of the best songs that were reimagined, retooled, repurposed, rebuilt or brought to their true potential by artists that, in some cases, claimed rightful ownership of someone else's song by sheer force of their brilliance. It's the first weekend in November of leap year. In America that can only mean one thing - it's time to VOTE for a new President, as well as a vast majority of Congress, local leaders and an endless array of ballot initiatives set to do everything from paying for schools to legalizing marijuana. It's a great time to be alive, because we the people can truly make a difference this week, if we use our power. To get you in the mood, Ben and his illustrious co-host, filmmaker Ryan Stockstad have done what some thought impossible. Happy Halloween from your friendly ghosts at All Time Top Ten! As is tradition around here, our resident ghoul-in-training Matt Dinan has dropped by for yet another spooky season-appropriate episode. This year we're going after songs about true crimes, that is, crimes that actually happened. The term 'psychedelic' in regards to music can be defined in a number of different ways. It can be seen as the experimental, avant-garde, or colorful side of music. To put it another way, like our special guest, singer/songwriter/musician/producer Chris Price suggests, it's music that gives you the experience of what it's like to be on drugs. The psychedelic movement began with the rise of LSD in the mid 1960's, but it certainly doesn't end there. All Time Top Ten is a podcast for music geeks by music geeks, and for the life of us we can't think of a band that brings musicians and geekery together like Steely Dan. From the streets of collegiate New York came Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, a dynamic duo that took the musicianship and flair of great jazz and fused it with a rock edge. Add in a sardonic wit and deceptively dark subject matter, and you get one of the most unique musical acts of the past 40 years. Looking back, it was a pretty crazy year for music - styles were converging like never before, from the emergence of punk and new wave into the mainstream, to the decline of disco and advent of stadium rock. Many rock legends lost their lives in 1980 - from John Bonham and Bon Scott to Ian Curtis and John Lennon. Michael Jackson broke out as a solo artist while Prince made headway on his slow climb to the top.
