Episode 405 - Top Ten Songs Sung By The Drummer w/Morty Coyle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6449

All the best albums in rock and pop history had a certain track, usually buried near the middle of side 2, that embodies the spirit of this week's playlist. The song was not a throwaway, it was not a novelty song, but it was a tad off the beaten path, and many times sung by another member of the band apart from the lead singer. Top Ten Songs Sung By The Drummer is chock full of those little gems that can sometimes fool people into thinking it's another band. If you're still confused the mensch of the hour DJ Morty Coyle is on the pod to explain it further. We think Songs Sung By The Drummer are the bee's knees, we encourage you to think the same. Morty and his daughter Bea make awesome videos featuring some of the best songs in rock n roll history. What does the world need now? More smartasses and less dumbasses. This here podcast episode celebrates the beloved Rock N Roll Smartass, that rare breed of songwriter and musician that embodies a healthy combination of the classic smartass adjectives - subversive, snarky, sarcastic, button-pushing, no-shit-giving, angry, paparazzi-hating, knowledge-filled, potty-mouthed, wry, etc. Basically the smartest people in any given room you put them in, whether they complain about being there or not. Resident rock n roll smartass, singer/songwriter, musical satirist and first time ATTT guest Eric Schwartz joins the pod from Beantown via a Facebook Messenger connection. Eric and Ben have a field day waxing rhapsodic about the guys and gals on the list, and about their innate ability to write and perform great songs, while showing off some serious big brain energy.  Episode 402 - Top Ten Cathartic Albums w/Maurice Bursztynski | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7473

ca·thar·sis /kəˈTHärsəs/ noun noun: catharsis; plural noun: catharses 1. the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. "music is a means of catharsis for them" 2. purgation. We've all been through times where we wanted to purge some evil spirits from our souls. We've all wanted to get things off of our chests from time to time. The artists on this week's list know from pain, and they just happened to have songwriting chops and a recording studio nearby. Host of the Love That Album podcast Maurice Bursztynski knows his catharsis, and he also happens to have killer taste in music. Ben and Maurice explore some albums that were a form of release for the artists involved. The evil spirits had to be vanquished, and in the best way possible - through honest, heartbreaking music. Come get cathartic with us. The most recent episode of Love That Album featured ATTT host Ben and the Numbers Girl herself, Ms Shannon Hurley. We broke down Wilco's epic masterpiece "Summerteeth".  Episode 400 - Top Ten Controversial Band Member Replacements w/Nick Baker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6964

Hey everybody, who has 2 thumbs, 400 episodes, and a big disbelieving grin on his face? This guy. Thank you so much for sticking with us through thick and thin, and here's to 400 more. This episode was taped back in a simpler time, February of 2020, when the air smelled like hope. Actually I went out to the park today and the air still smelled like hope. Hashtag Songs Of Hope. Anyway, our special guest this week, Nick Baker and your humble host had a swell time breaking down our list of the most Controversial Band Member Replacements of all time. To be sure, not every song you're going to hear is great, but the controversies are real. The stories behind the rockers who took over for another who either quit, was fired or died are ridiculous at best, tragic at worst. They're all included in this fine episode of a long-running podcast. Nick Baker and his insanely talented wife Marina V are hard at work creating music that demands to be heard.  Episode 399 - Grammy 'Best New Artist' Winners Of The 70s Worst To First w/Shannon Hurley & Diane Stroud | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7524

Although they have made 'some' strides in recent years, the Grammy Academy has always been suspect in gauging the best music of any given year. From rock to disco to punk to new wave, the 1970s were arguably the best decade in the history of popular music, and yet so many artists and bands that currently reside in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame, or are held as the best of all time in the court of public opinion just didn't get the love they deserved from the Grammys in their heyday. This is especially apparent when you find out who the Academy chose to represent "Best New Artist" back in that musically amazing decade. To highlight when they got it ridiculously wrong, and occasionally right, ATTT has procured the services of Pals O' The Pod Shannon Hurley and Diane Stroud to take a side-eyed glance at the list of bands and artists that won "Best New Artist" at the Grammys throughout the 70s. We were tasked with ranking these artists from Worst To First, as we sometimes like to do around here. Ben, Shannon and Diane take apart the list and put it back together in the proper WTF order, and you will have your mind blown when you find out who the winners were, who the other nominees were and what else got snubbed in that particular year. It's an eye-opening and hopefully highly entertaining lesson.  Episode 398 - Top Ten Songs With Fast Singing w/Tony Ross | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5940

The weird, wild and wonderful world of fast singing is a delightful place to spend an hour and a half, and probably not much more beyond that. It can be downright exhausting listening to these singers busting a lung and a tongue. Veteran fast-sung-song aficionado Tony Ross joins the pod for a highly silly episode all about those little gems of manic goodness. Word to the wise, try not to get these frenetic tunes stuck in your head, lest you ever sleep again. Big shout out to the great Steve Goodie, who will blow your mind with his parody of Weird Al's "Hardware Store" with a Harry Potter-tastic theme.  Episode 397 - Top Ten Essential Rockabilly Artists w/Thad Wawro & Susan Atkinson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6420

Early on in the making of the musical stew that would eventually become rock n roll, a batch was cooked up that was one part country, one part stripped-down western swing, and one part rhythm & blues. They added a dash of attitude the result was lean & mean 2 minute rockers drenched with reverb and echo to spare. They called it "Rockabilly" and its unique combination of styles made it the perfect appetizer and inspiration for all of the rock that we've loved over the past 60 years or so. Longtime Pals O' The Pod and professed rockabilly fanatics Thad Wawro and Susan Atkinson join All Time Top Ten to count down the most legendary artists of the genre. Put on your historian hat and help us celebrate rock n roll's bastard cousin, rockabilly.  Episode 393 - Top Ten Hit Songs With Odd Time Signatures w/Dustin Prince | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5429

Any old schmo with an abacus can do the math and whip up a song in an odd time signature. What's tough is to write a song in 7/8 or 13/4 or 5/4 that people actually want to hear outside of the nutty math-rock folks (who we adore). To write an honest to Jebez HIT SONG with an odd time signature is such an incredibly impressive magic trick, we felt the topic warranted it's own episode of ATTT. Of course our ol pal Dustin Prince is more than up for the gig, as he drums with the best of em. To the uninitiated, fear not. We get into what an odd time signature actually is, and help you with your counting skillz. You'll need them as you try to do the math on these amazing songs that burned up the charts despite them being quite difficult to dance to.  Episode 392 - Top Ten Rock N Roll Storytellers Vol. 1 w/Nikki Kreuzer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7283

Who doesn't love a good story? Add in some music and a catchy chorus and you've got what only the most brilliant minds in music can create - a great story song. Storytelling songwriters are a special breed. Many that write story songs in the genres of rock, pop, folk and country like to explore the darker, more tragic, desperate or downtrodden sides of humanity, to compelling effect. ATTT is overwhelmed to have such an awesome guest, and one who absolutely nailed her first ever episode. Writer, actor, artist, photographer and professional music encyclopedia Nikki Kreuzer was kind enough to drop by GoodList Studios to help count down the first of many volumes of those songwriters with an uncanny knack for putting great stories to music. Nikki can be found all over social media, but we highly recommend giving her a follow on the Twitters: https://twitter.com/NikkiKreuzer Her writing on music, culture and LA can be found at: http://www.offbeatla.com Listen to her radio show Bubblegum & Other Delights on DubLab: https://www.dublab.com/shows/the-bubblegum-other-delights Stream this playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0UF07dMkhULtw2BjBg0VAq?si=f-QGPdGmRv6KLs_OmLpOMg
