For the old-time Tune of the Week, 12/21/18, this 1800's hymn from William Walker's Southern Harmony book (first published in 1835) has beautiful lyrics that makes it perfect for Christmas. I tuned down the 5th string to an "e" note and played Star of the East in Am.

Intrigued by the title and the tune as played by Matt Combs, I had to work harder than usual to arrange John Hartford's fiddle tune. It has a Southwest/Latin flavor, though the title takes it much farther up north where John performed at an annual bluegrass festival in Mole Lake, Wisconsin.
For the old-time Tune of the Week, 12/14/18, this sentimental song plays out in clawhammer rather than the Scruggs picking style I originally learned it in.
