 HBM021: Potential Energy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:23:11

Season 2 of Here Be Monsters begins. The reasons why I bike fast at night are diverse. It’s partly because I don’t feel graceful anywhere else, it’s partly to run away, and it’s partly out of persistent defiance of my failing vision. But mostly, it's because it's a sensation totally alien to anything else in my life and it lets me think about things better. I recently biked out to a parking garage on the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado and remembered the most significant moment of my eighteenth year, a night that made everything I do now possible. The story involves electronic dance music, a laundromat, a bunch of sweaty teenagers pretending like it’s the eighties and one of the loudest amplifiers I’ve ever heard. Music by: Nym: http://music.ratsofnym.com/ The Black Spot: http://theblackspot.bandcamp.com/ Here Be Monsters is now a proud member of the Mule Radio Syndicate, which distributes really great podcasts.  HBM020: Without Name | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:29:00

Eugene up and left for California one morning without packing a thing from his apartment in Brooklyn, New York. HBM producer Lina Misitzis and her roommate Adrian got the apartment at a discount. The condition, though, was that they took the place as Eugene left it—full of his left-behind life. For two years they enjoyed Eugene's magazine subscriptions, ate out of his bowls, slept on his old couch and used his designer spices. Sensitive listeners be aware that this episode discusses prostitution, drug use and animal abuse. We beeped the swears though. In this episode, Lina goes back to her old neighborhood looking for nothing in particular. She's greeted by familiar faces, new tenants, and a series of stories that tell a modern ghost story of a building in the bad part of Brooklyn. Photos of Eugene’s apartment coming soon to the HBM facebook page: http://is.gd/hbmfacebook/ Music on the show from: Phantom Fauna http://phantomfauna.bandcamp.com/ The Black Spot http://theblackspot.bandcamp.com/ Swamp Dog http://swampdog.bandcamp.com/ Please please please, review the show on iTunes so that we can make their New and Noteworthy section http://is.gd/hbmitunes And, don’t forget to visit us online, where you can see all the different ways to get involved and listen: http://HBMpodcast.com Special thanks this week to the Brooklyn Historical Society. In 2006, Pete Brook moved from England to California to study the museum at San Quentin State Prison. Through his research, he learned of America's first-in-the-world rates of incarceration inside of prisons that are largely hidden from view. In 2008, Pete began Prison Photography, a blog that dissects images of prisons and prisoners.  HBM018: How I Learned to Love Rejection (part 2) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:46

This is part 2 of 2. Listen to part 1: http://is.gd/hbm017 In the summer of 2011, a scared 22 year old decided to hitchhike across America. He was trying to meet real Americans. However, there was a caveat—he was also terrified of strangers. That young traveler was me. Fear was becoming far too prevalent in my life, so I headed out onto the road. This episode looks at the lessons I learned in the first half of that trip, joining a carnival, sleeping in a cemetery, camping with a train rider named puke. The Here Be monsters podcast is a growing community of producers and artists and musicians and thinkers, oriented to follow fears, and the unknown and anything that's confusing or interesting. Right now, we’re doing a fundraiser for the show, selling a really unique and funny magazine with photos from this hitchhiking trip.
