 Kickstarter Updates – Wargaming Recon #201 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:02

In recent years we’ve recommended that listeners back a variety of Kickstarter projects.  This episode provides updates to some of those projects. Miniature Wargaming the Movie Introduced in Episode 148 in 2015. Documentary sought to be a comprehensive look at the wargaming hobby. Was recommended by Henry Hyde. Delivery of digital copies estimated for January 2016 with physical copies arriving December 2016. 2nd Kickstarter was launched to raise a further 19,000+ GBP on top of the original 5,000 GBP. Estimated delivery dates on the 2nd Kickstarter was pushed to November 2017 for both digital and physical copies of the documentary. A January 2018 update says things are nearing the end.  After many problems and setbacks it is hoped this will finally release in 2018. Hexographer 2 Shared on Episode 167 in 2016. Designer Joe Wetzel wanted to update his Hexographer software. Hexographer is an easy to use cross-platform map making software perfect for those creating a RPG or wargaming campaign or even those who just enjoy doing some worldbuilding. Jonathan used the original Hexographer for the Dedhampton Revolution (listen to Episode 90 for more on the Dedhampton Revolution). Estimated delivery of Hexographer 2 was February 2017.  I received mine by June 2017. Cigar Box Battle Double Sided Mats Cigar Box Battle is an incredible company making wargaming mats. We first discussed Cigar Box Battle in Episode 176 when we reviewed their mats. Co-owner Chris Ward discussed the company on Episode 183 when he alluded to the Kickstarter project. They asked for $1,5000 in funding and received over $71,000! This is the only Kickstarter I’ve backed where the product was delivered BEFORE the estimated delivery date. Everlasting the Best Wet Palette Launched in 2017 by Redgrass Games from France. They sought to create the best wet palette possible for painters of all stripes. They asked for 37,500 Euros and received 270,426 Euros. March 2018 is their estimated date of delivery.  Looking like it will more likely become an April 2018 delivery. Throughout the entire process their communication has been impeccable. Have to thank Enfilade for their support, which has allowed us to back this Kickstarter. Upcoming Kickstarters That Excite Us Cigar Box Battle has said they will do one in 2018.  No further information on dates or the product.  If it is anything like their double-sided mats it is sure to be fantastic! Peter Bryant from the Mythwits has a Kickstarter coming soon for a revised edition of his Cube of Death game.  We recommended his Rogue Chess Kickstarter on Episode 94.  Peter is coming on the show to discuss his Cube of Death Kickstarter. Dwarven Forge has TWO Kickstarters planned this year.  The first will be a smaller one focusing on more of their miniatures.  The plan is to expand their range by creating underserved miniatures (i.e. townspeople, seated figures, etc).  The second will be in line with their Dungeon of Doom Kickstarter from 2017.  It will expand their terrain range.  Stefan Pokorny and Nate Taylor from Dwarven Forge will be on the show in 2018 to discuss the two Kickstarters. Kickstarter for Wargamers With all this talk about Kickstarter and crowdfunding it can still be a tad confusing for a wargamer to understand it all if you’re unfamiliar.  We shared guidelines for what crowdfunding projects to back (and which to avoid) on Episode 118. Jonathan’s (Not a Lawyer) 5 Guidelines for Backing a Kickstarter Have a clear idea of your EXPECTATION. Determine if it matches what the project creator is doing. COMMUNICATE with the project creator BEFORE backing. This is the best way to ask questions. Only pledge when you KNOW the project creator, their work, or a respectable person you trust vouches for the creator and the project. Closely EXAMINE the Kickstarter project. Does it seem too good to be true? Is it unreasonable? Or impossible? Pledge no more money than you can afford to LOSE if things go s[...]

 ReCast: 5 Convention Pet Peeves – Wargaming Recon #179 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:52

You know what really grinds my gears? What gears you ask? Well the GEARS OF WAR(gaming conventions). Join Jonathan today as he vents his mind in regards to what can improve our beloved gaming cons. The longest-running tabletop wargaming podcast on the planet   1 – Unnecessarily Difficult Experiences It shouldn’t be like searching for the Ark of the Covenant to find where you are supposed to be gaming. Failing to number tables for GMs, mentioned in the TotalCon 2017 ep, is a prime example, This is a simple fix and very easy to avoid. Other things would be inadequate gaming space, having the con in hard to find locations, when your GPS says “good luck” when you put in the address is a bad sign. 2 – Registration problems You should not be able to pre-register for games that are full. Opening pre-registration for hotel rooms and/or the convention too far in advance also falls into this category. Just like a fat person getting small clothes before they lose weight, when the time comes you just don’t know if it will fit. 3 – Unclear rules The con should have a clearly stated and found code of conduct/terms of service/policies. They should at least state what is or is not allowed and also how monetary transactions are to occur. By this I mean they should say how much a ticket costs, payment methods, etc. If Moses could present 10 rules to the Hebrews, con organisers could come up with a handful of common sense guidelines. 4 – Lack of gaming variety/too much variety It is annoying when a con has 5 games using a single system/time period to the detriment of all else.  It is also annoying if there’s a lot of different games that don’t cover any of the most popular systems/time periods. Clumping similar games/periods together such as all the WW2 games in a Saturday afternoon slot can be another problem. This tends to rely more on the GMs submitting the games as they submit what they like and when they can run the game.  The con does have a responsibility to intervene. Not everyone can be at the con all weekend or can play in that Saturday afternoon.  You need spread things out. Just like vegemite, it is better if its spread lightly and evenly. 5 – No Attendee Feedback Every con should strive to provide the best customer service it can. Nobody is perfect and even for those that are great they can benefit from feedback. Every con should have some method for attendees to easily provide feedback. This can be as simple as a SurveyMonkey survey online, feedback forms at the con, or posting on social media. The con needs to take that feedback to heart, think about it, and make any necessary changes.  Don’t be like comic store guy from the Simpsons – “worst feedback ever….” Mailbag From Facebook Listener Don said of Episode 176: Cigar Box Battle Mat Review -“I’m selling them in the studio now.” Do You Like Wargaming Recon, then Review the show If you like what you hear please consider reviewing us on iTunes & Stitcher Radio. iTunes and Stitcher Radio are some of the most popular ways for listeners to find podcasts.  Gaming Year in Review – Wargaming Recon #198 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:52:31

Perched in a pizza place, Jonathan and Alex sit and slip into a state of nostalgia as they regale each other with stories from the front (and sometimes from the paint table) Alex Has been spending his time solo gaming with Kings of War by Mantic. He has been talking this game up for a while, and this show notes monkey can tell you it is a great game! Inclusive of all scales and also easy enough for kids to get involved in. Speaking of kids and gaming, Alex has also been playing Castle panic with his daughter, the best draw card in this is that it is a co-op game, which by Alex’s standards is a great way to get kids into gaming. Alex also mentions some time he has spent playing Pandemic, listen to what he lays out while stuffing his face.   Johnny Boy Oh Johnny Boy……. the paints, the paints are calling! You have heard it right people, Jonathan has gotten excited for a painting handle, the GW Painting handle to be precise. Leaving to a nice debate between him and Alex in regards to GW product vs Heart Burn Medication Tub. But the paradox to this is – Jonathan Painting. While trying to avoid further argument, Jonathan tells us about his new game “How to get quickly and safely from A to B”. Hopefully the game helps him get his point across.   Mailbag From Facebook: Listener Jack Said of Episode 197 – Holiday Gift Guide 2017: “Just finished listening, cool episode.
