Dwarven Forge Caverns Deep – Wargaming Recon #213 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:42:49

Dwarven Forge is diving to caverns deep and cold with their new Kickstarter.  Stefan Pokorny, founder, & Nate Taylor, creative director, of Dwarven Forge climb into the guest chair to chat with Jonathan about this exciting new set of modular tabletop gaming terrain. Dwarven Forge Raised $11,245,120 dollars from 16,650 backers over five prior Kickstarter projects. Nate Taylor is Dwarven Forge’s creative director and a director at KYLE nyc where he’s edited commercials, music videos, and the film Kissing Jessica Stein. Stefan Pokorny is Dwarven Forge’s founder and CEO.  He’s the subject of the incredible documentary The Dwarvenaut (Amazon affiliate link). Kickstarter 6 – Caverns Deep Caverns Deep Kickstarter returns to the familiar caverns setting and expands on it with larger and new modular terrain options. The pieces are their most detailed and organic looking yet. Most of the funds will go towards producing the steel molds necessary to create the beautiful pieces. The modular terrain is intended for roleplaying games but also works well for skirmish games like Frostgrave. Sneak peeks of some pieces including early prototypes are shown in the live streamed video recording of this audio podcast. Listener Questions Stefan & Nate respond to questions from podcast listeners.  The questions are: Rich asks Stefan “What are Gnome Critical Crotch Hits” David asks “On a scale of 1 to 10 how awesome is Joe Manganiello’s Dwarven Forge setup?” Carl asks “What pieces of Dwarven Forge are essential and which will give the customer the most bang for their buck?” Angelia Parenteau from TotalCon asks Stefan “When are you coming back to TotalCon?” Announcements   Podcast Award We’re in the running for an award in the Games & Hobbies category.  Need you to help nominate us.  Travel Battle Review – Wargaming Recon #210 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:41

This thrilling episode the lads review Travel Battle from the Perry Brothers. We all know that Jonathan hates painting, so being the scale it is, is this the right fit for johnny boy? Problems Does not clearly say how to choose d6 rolling winner for placing 1st brigade. Presuming it is highest roll because it says that for going first.  But, not 100% positive. This is a bit nit picky. The terrain has issues, built up areas only give +1 dice when defending to infantry, but attacking cavalry get +1 dice against infantry in built up areas. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.  Cavalry should do worse against built up areas. The rules are a tad muddy when dealing with artillery shooting at a target if there’s a hill in between that is the same height as the artillery. In one part the rules say “Artillery needs to be able to see half or more of a target i.e. without hills/buildings or any other intervening units in the way to be able to fire. “In another part the rules say “artillery can fire overhead of a any intervening unit if either gun or target are on a hill unless “there is a higher hill in the way. If artillery is on a level 1 hill shooting at a target with a level 1 hill in between, can the artillery shoot at that target?  The rules don’t say. The FAQ, Doesn’t answer all questions.  Can be found at https://www.perry-miniatures.com/pages.php?page=travel-battle. No declaration of what is the desired dice roll result for going first or placing a brigade first. QUESTIONS In a fight if an attacker rolls a 5 and the defender rolls a 5, the rules say the fight continues.  If a second unit attacks the same defender with attacker rolling a 5 and defender rolling a 3, which result takes precedence? If defending artillery loses a combat to a heavy cavalry unit (attacker rolls a 3, defending artillery a 2) does it push back one square if the square behind it is a wood?  What happens? When do you test for command radius?  Do all units in a brigade need to be touching at the start of the turn or is it at any point during the movement phase? Can Brigadiers block line of sight of artillery since they’re listed as a unit in the rules (see Assembly section)? Does a unit suffering push back or retreat (losing combat by a 1 or a 2) have to be directly towards its own board edge?  When You Can’t Game With Friends – Wargaming Recon #204 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:12

Sometimes life gets so busy that you can’t game with your buddies like you used to.  What do you do when that happens?  We share 5 tips to help you manage. 5 Tips Game remotely Find a new group of gamers Play a different game Use other aspects of the hobby Spend time with other friends or family Game Remotely Use Youtube Live/Google Hangouts on Air to play games with your friends.  All you need is a computer with a microphone and webcam.  You could also use something like Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds if playing a roleplaying game is your style. Find a New Group of Gamers Visit your local game store or club.  They often have dedicated gaming nights.  Just check their online calendar.  Fridays, for example, tend to be for Friday Night Magic.  Other nights may be for board games, or miniatures gaming, or RPGs.  You could also try using Meetup to find an existing group of gamers or to start your own group. Play a Different Game Switch it up by playing another game you like with a group of friends who may not normally like playing what you usually do.  Many board games have digital versions you can download as apps for your smartphones and tablets.  You can also use Steam to easily play computer games. Use Other Aspects of the Hobby You don’t need to be gaming to sate your gaming desire.  Why not listen to gaming podcasts, paint minis, build terrain, and research histories or read about the setting?  Watching videos can be useful, too.  There’s lots of how to videos or even actual play content on Youtube.  If you’d like to give an actual play video a try, we strongly recommend Tassels Plays.  It is a channel run by the daughter of friend of the show Jay Libby.  She does a great job creating entertaining and interesting videos. Spend Time With Other Friends or Family Inasmuch as we love to play games, we cannot game all the time.  Chances are we have non-gamer friends who’d like to spend time with us.  Why not use this opportunity to reconnect with them?  Or you could switch gears and engage in more qualify family time with your significant other and/or children.  There might even be a project you’ve put off at home that you can cross off that honey do list.   Announcements Listener Survey First ever listener survey being done.  Will only take 3 minutes of your time to answer 10 questions.  This will help us to improve the show by learning a little more about your listening habits along with what content you want us to put on the show.  Please take the survey and share it with your friends.  Cube of Death Kickstarter – Wargaming Recon #202 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:50

Cube of Death is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.  It’s a trivia game.  No wait.  It’s a roleplaying game.  Wait, its a card game.  Actually…it is all three of those things. The Kickstarter Cube of Death will launch to Kickstarter in the spring or summer of 2018.  There will be over 600 cards in the game.  Separate decks provide characters, an adventure deck of rooms, and also the many different trivia questions.  Depending on the level at which one backs the Kickstarter project you will receive various rewards. The game is being launched by TSR and will appear on the TSR Kickstarter account instead of Peter Bryant’s.  Peter used his own to launch Rogue Chess.  Kickstarter Updates – Wargaming Recon #201 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:02

In recent years we’ve recommended that listeners back a variety of Kickstarter projects.  This episode provides updates to some of those projects. Miniature Wargaming the Movie Introduced in Episode 148 in 2015. Documentary sought to be a comprehensive look at the wargaming hobby. Was recommended by Henry Hyde. Delivery of digital copies estimated for January 2016 with physical copies arriving December 2016. 2nd Kickstarter was launched to raise a further 19,000+ GBP on top of the original 5,000 GBP. Estimated delivery dates on the 2nd Kickstarter was pushed to November 2017 for both digital and physical copies of the documentary. A January 2018 update says things are nearing the end.  After many problems and setbacks it is hoped this will finally release in 2018. Hexographer 2 Shared on Episode 167 in 2016. Designer Joe Wetzel wanted to update his Hexographer software. Hexographer is an easy to use cross-platform map making software perfect for those creating a RPG or wargaming campaign or even those who just enjoy doing some worldbuilding. Jonathan used the original Hexographer for the Dedhampton Revolution (listen to Episode 90 for more on the Dedhampton Revolution). Estimated delivery of Hexographer 2 was February 2017.  I received mine by June 2017. Cigar Box Battle Double Sided Mats Cigar Box Battle is an incredible company making wargaming mats. We first discussed Cigar Box Battle in Episode 176 when we reviewed their mats. Co-owner Chris Ward discussed the company on Episode 183 when he alluded to the Kickstarter project. They asked for $1,5000 in funding and received over $71,000! This is the only Kickstarter I’ve backed where the product was delivered BEFORE the estimated delivery date. Everlasting the Best Wet Palette Launched in 2017 by Redgrass Games from France. They sought to create the best wet palette possible for painters of all stripes. They asked for 37,500 Euros and received 270,426 Euros. March 2018 is their estimated date of delivery.  Looking like it will more likely become an April 2018 delivery. Throughout the entire process their communication has been impeccable. Have to thank Enfilade for their support, which has allowed us to back this Kickstarter. Upcoming Kickstarters That Excite Us Cigar Box Battle has said they will do one in 2018.  No further information on dates or the product.  If it is anything like their double-sided mats it is sure to be fantastic! Peter Bryant from the Mythwits has a Kickstarter coming soon for a revised edition of his Cube of Death game.  We recommended his Rogue Chess Kickstarter on Episode 94.  Peter is coming on the show to discuss his Cube of Death Kickstarter. Dwarven Forge has TWO Kickstarters planned this year.  The first will be a smaller one focusing on more of their miniatures.  The plan is to expand their range by creating underserved miniatures (i.e. townspeople, seated figures, etc).  The second will be in line with their Dungeon of Doom Kickstarter from 2017.  It will expand their terrain range.  Stefan Pokorny and Nate Taylor from Dwarven Forge will be on the show in 2018 to discuss the two Kickstarters. Kickstarter for Wargamers With all this talk about Kickstarter and crowdfunding it can still be a tad confusing for a wargamer to understand it all if you’re unfamiliar.  We shared guidelines for what crowdfunding projects to back (and which to avoid) on Episode 118. Jonathan’s (Not a Lawyer) 5 Guidelines for Backing a Kickstarter Have a clear idea of your EXPECTATION. Determine if it matches what the project creator is doing. COMMUNICATE with the project creator BEFORE backing. This is the best way to ask questions. Only pledge when you KNOW the project creator, their work, or a respectable person you trust vouches for the creator and the project. Closely EXAMINE the Kickstarter project. Does it seem too good to be true? Is it unreasonable? Or impossible? Pledge no more money than you can afford to LOSE if things go s[...]
