 Expat Files - 09.21.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #792 SUN, SEPT 21- (09-21-2018):  #1-Big Brother Influence and penetration in Latin America: How pervasive is it? What Latin countries are serious about implementing it US style. What about the presence of that good old “lag time” effect?  #2- We know all about the cancer called socialism and its malignant effects in Latin America via Venezuela and Cuba. Even so, people never learn and are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past: Sound familiar? That said, what Latin countries are next in line to follow down that sad and depressing trail? Some are on the road to ruin already. #3-Seems everyone in Latin America wants to get a job in their own government bureaucracy, and for good reason: Most Latin governments pay twice the rate of similar positions in the private sector and believe it or not there is one particular Latin country that routinely pays up to THREE times the private sector going rate. Can you guess that Latin country? Nope, it’s not Costa Rica.  #4- Ten reasons why I personally would visit, but never want to live in, Uruguay, Argentina or Colombia: Although they really were pretty good expat “Plan B” choices some five or ten years ago, turns out rags and blogs like AARP, Living Overseas and International Living and others have helped kill the goose that laid the golden egg.  #5-Ten good reasons why retiring into the sunset by sucking down Mai-tais on your beachfront property ain’t what it’s cracked up to be.  #7- Check out my “The Expat Files” You Tube channel. See all the fun slides and photos that go along with each show. There are now more than 150 shows posted on my YouTube channel so have a look.   #8- For more of Johnny’s reports, comments, adventures, news, surprises the famous “Expat Concierge Service” and more, check it all out at: www.thenewexpat.com

 Expat Files - 05.13.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #757- SUN, MAY 13- (05-13-2018): #1- What the hell is going in Nicaragua? Part 1: Marches in the streets, people dying at the hands of the cops and the military, my how things change. It used to be such a highly touted and peaceful place for gringos and expats retiring and relocating. Why not so long ago International Living and most all of the retirement rags and bloggers gave it a #1 thumbs up (though I never went all in myself) yet they all seemed to forget theirs a killer, rapist, psychopath in charge. Once a psycho always a psycho. Though it’s true that with a cistern it’s always the biggest chunks of crap that float to the top.  #2- Carrying a piece of gold or silver at all times as a kind of emergency “get out of jail free” survival kit is always recommended: I have done exactly that for the past 27 + years and have been carrying the very same coin(s) that I started with on day one of my adventure. Today we describe how it’s best done and demonstrate my favorite stealthy coin hiding technique  #3- Today we have a “boots on the ground” walk through the Guatemalan immigration offices. Hear how one of our regular listeners obtained his permanent Guatemalan residency in record time. Definitely expecting the worst, long lines, delays and the usual Latin inefficiencies, our expat gringo was more than pleasantly surprised at how it all turned out… #4- The latest scoop on the different internet and cellphone plans with various big IT companies like Movistar, TIGO and Claro: The plans vary greatly and are also forever changing- depending on whether you chose a contract plan (usually 18 months long) or non-contract plan.    #5-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018. Get the details and the scoop on the early-bird discounts by going to www.TheNewExpat.com and clicking on the “seminar” link.    #6- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your exit plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America. Check out the free intro video to the course now at www.TheExpatFiles.com/academy  #7- Check out my “The Expat Files” You Tube channel. See all the fun slides and photos that go along with each show.  Expat Files - 05.11.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #756- FRI, MAY 11- (05-11-2018): #1- Are there any Latin countries on the fast track to becoming 1st world or somewhat 1st world? Just what do the terms 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th world mean?  #2- Plastic, easy credit, high interest loans and extended payment plans are ripe temptations for the Latin public. Most Latinos have no money in the bank… hmm, now where have we heard that one before?  #3- Argentina is fast becoming an economic basket case once again: Its currency (the peso) is in near free-fall against the US dollar and the inflation rate has been over 25% year over year. But that’s nothing new for Argentina. Somewhat older locals who’ve all witnessed bouts of extreme fiscal mismanagement and monetary chaos say it’s a normal yet very abnormal cycle that occurs about every ten years. Argentine parents actually tell their kids that money (pesos) are meant to be spent quickly... and not to be saved.   #4- Labor unions and labor organizations in Latin America: Yes, trade and labor unions do exist south of the border. In some of the less developed countries like Honduras, El Salvador and Peru they are mostly benign and toothless, but in other more bureaucratic Latin countries like Argentina and Costa Rica they are strong and have huge memberships that can shut down the country in a heartbeat. Unfortunately they do so regularly or threaten to do so…    #5- The truth about gringos and expats and pickpockets in Latin America (or anywhere).  #6-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018. Latin countries never signed on to it and here’s why… #5- When and why tropical birds will commit suicide on your property: Yes unfortunately it does happen and it’s sad. I lose about one or two birds a month that way myself. No I’m not talking about driveway chickens but the Nat Geo quality kind. #6- How and way narcos are fast switching from drugs to the Mexican oil theft business #7-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #753-SUN, APR 22- (04-22-2018): #1- Words of wisdom from gringos who left the US a long while back and are now expert expats. #2- The seedy side of gringos and expats: If you want to see the dark side of gringo life and meet gringos and expats who’ve gone native check out the nearest gringo/expat bar (before noontime if possible). I’ve often wondered how many millions in Social Security and Disability Checks have gone to pay for booze, bar snack and greasy tacos with mystery meat here in Latin America. Welcome to today’s ”boots on the ground” story… #2- There are basically TWO kinds of backpackers- Gringos and Europeans. There are some very big differences too… #3- When Gringos go wild, native and illegal- Part 2 #4- Cuba for expats –Part 2 #5- Ever wonder how Johnny packed and prepared for his initial move to Latin America? Find out in today’s show. #6-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7 th thru Thursday, July 12 th 2018. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #752-FRI, APR 20- (04-20-2018): #1- 101 reasons why I don’t use Flakebook, Titter Linkedin or any of the other antisocial media platforms, nor do I have a Smartphone: Listen to this rant if you dare. It’s guaranteed to ruin your day and give your stomach that sad, sinking feeling. #2- A few more words about the ever increasing Latin addiction to anti- social media. #3- Credit Card fraud is on the increase in Latin America too! Latinos with debit and credit cards are constantly getting scammed. Don’t let it happen to you. Today we have some boots on the ground stories on the subject and some tips. #4- Just lately, some new English words have been slowly creeping into the Latin vernacular and becoming commonly used. You’ll be surprised which ones. When you hear them you’ll wonder how those particular gems managed to creep into common usage. #5- Gringos and expats seem to universally hate Reggeton and Latin rockmusic: Unfortunately it’s constantly droning and bleating from every house, bar, mall and supermarket… practically everywhere, so we can’t avoid it. Even when making allowances for the fact Latin America is the 3 rd world, there’s really is no excuse for the hugely popular success of such mind- numbing rhythms. Worse yet, they happen to be combined with, misogynist, sexist, crude and grossly pathetic lyrics (sound familiar?) The only possible conclusion is that Latinos set the entertainment bar so low it’s even a step below rap and hip hop- if that’s even possible. #6-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar.  Expat Files - 04.15.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #751- SUN, APR 15- (04-15-2018):#1- The brutal truth about persistent bad smells in so many Latinrestaurant restrooms and Latin bathrooms:Some smells will knock you over though most Latinos don’t seem to mindor even notice them. That’s just another something gringos and expatsnever seem to get used to- why should we? Problem is, if you have aLatina or Latino significant other you will most surely get invited to thehumble family residence for dinner, like it or not. What if you just cannotstomach the bathroom, or the man-sized cucarachas in the kitchen?Knowing what lurks in the shadows, chances are you won’t be all thatcomfortable at the dinner table. That’s a common scenario for gringos, sowhat do you do?#2- Expat Eddie plows into a motorcycle and breaks the guy’s ankle. Sonow what? It’s the subject today’s “boots on the ground” story. The fact is that cheap, small, noisy motorcycles have been multiplying likecucarachas throughout all of Latin America- thanks to new cheap creditschemes and no money down deals. Problem is that 50% of drivers don’thave licenses, and 100% of them constantly violate the rules of the road.#3- How to become an easy target for a snatch and grab motorcyclerobbery/assault#4- What to do if you’re in a car accident:Here’s how to handle the cops (and the other guy) immediately after theaccident and well before your insurance guy arrives on the scene.#5-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar.  Expat Files - 04.13.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #750- FRI, APR 13- (04-13-2018):#1- Getting residency and a 2nd Passport in Latin America; That second passport is your “get out of Dodge” free card when things get rough and Uncle Sam puts the hammer down and starts to limit freedom of movement. That’s what always happens when national calamities both natural and man-made strike hard. So today we have quite a few tips and suggestions on how to advance you and your family’s “Plan B”. You must insure your freedom of movement and be able to cover your ass when the SHTF. #2- Gringos and expats are a highly sought after commodity in Latin countries but here’s the conundrum: Sure, every Latino knows gringos are more educated, have more money, higher standards, more initiative and create many more jobs and businesses than the locals. The conundrum is, if we are so well thought of and appreciated why is it that Latin governments keep changing the residency application rules, often without notice, making the process harder for gringos thus deterring them, a most valuable commodity? #3-DYK: unless a gringo has attained permanent residency, he’s not permitted to work legally in his/her new Latin country: But that doesn’t seem to stop anyone with a good business idea. So today we discuss how to you can work and/or start a business and still remain within the letter of the law… even though you’re prohibited by that same law to do so. Confused yet? Well this is Latin America ya know. #4- BITCOIN DAN SPEAKS:I spent 3 hours one on one with him the other day. He doled out some pearls and golden nuggets regarding cryptocurrencies, ICO’s the block chain, etc. You’ll want to hear his predictions!! #5-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #749- SUN, APR 08- (04-08-2018): #1- PERU: what’s wrong with it, what’s right with it? How do gringos and Expats make out living, and retiring there? #2- The Odebrecht payoffs: What the ass media (I mean mass media) is not telling you about the biggest corruption scandal in the history of Latin America. #3-Big city living for gringos and Expats in Latin America: Things to consider if you “Plan B” involves living in the big city. #4-When Gringos and Gringas marry into wealthy Latin families. It occurs more than you might think. Today we have two surprising boots on the ground stories on that tumultuous subject.  #5- In every Latin country (even Cuba and Venezuela) there are a handful of very powerful families that have been pulling the political and economic strings of the country for generations. Today we discuss some things you never knew (but should) about a certain handful of Latin “oligarchs”. You just might meet a few of them personally- especially if you’re living well off the tourist trail.     #6-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #748- FRI, APR 06- (04-06-2018): “#1- Crypto currency and mining in Latin America, an April 2018 update: A bitcoin multi-millionaire writes in, answering and commenting on all the hot and heavy questions gringos and expats have been asking and wondering about. He clears the air on many points you certainly have not heard mentioned before, anywhere.   #2- You’ve heard that Latinos are exceedingly happy? Well maybe: Even the poorest of the poor with very hard lives, the ones who wash laundry in rivers and cook with wood seem much happier than the average gringo back home. But there are some unhappy and miserable Latinos too...  #3-Prepare to get “blessed” by Latinos on the street (and by your maid and gardener too). Yes, frequently and always with a smile- often a half dozen times a day too. Today’s “boots on the ground” story…  #4-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018.  Expat Files - 04.01.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #747- SUN, APR 01- (04-01-2018): #1- How gringos and expats who insist on staying off the radar buy their phones, SIM cards and internet service, while still somehow remaining (mostly) anonymous: In the last year or so most all Latin countries have passed laws forcing local cellphone and internet providers to require passport, home address and ID info. They’ve done this ostensibly because there are many extortion attempts by bad guys who somehow get their personal stats and dats. BTW: Latinos have no concept of privacy. They’ll give up their personal dats for any pop up window that promises a free pizza(sound familiar?). Authorities believe they can deter or catch bad guys by having a database of owners and thus trace reported extortion attempts. Duh? If you were an extortionist, wouldn’t you use a stolen phone? Double duh! So today we discuss some of the amazingly easy “hacks” certain astute expats use to get around those stupid requirements. Of course the easiest way to get your lawyer to apply for the service and pass it off to you, then it’s all in HIS name and address. But in lieu of that….  #2- It’s almost never necessary to carry your original passport around with you except when…  #3-Funny and sometime scary things happen when gringos and expats decide to build their own Latin American dream house: Today’s “boots on the ground” story  #4- A discussion with a young Latin psychologist reveals some amazing generalities about Latin culture that don’t exist up north in the gringo world:  #5-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018.  Expat Files - 03.30.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #746- FRI, MAR 30- (03-30-2018): #1- Muslims and Arabs in Latin America: Lately, lots of emails have been coming in expressing concern that radical Muslims may be setting up shop in Latin America intent on making their way through Mexico up to the states. Today we offer some more surprising “boots on the ground” insights on the subject.  #2- What’s life really like for gringos and expats who decide to live in small Latin towns or out in the boonies? Many expats prefer a slow, laid-back life in the boonies or a small town. For some time that’s been my choice too. Today we’ll be offering some important tips and suggestions to make life easier if you choose that particular option for your “Plan B” #3-Did you know that Panama has enacted permanent price controls on twenty-two different basic food items? Shades of Bernie Sanders! That’s reason #435 why Panama is not nearly the expat paradise it once was. Drastic measures like experimenting with price controls (which always fail and cause more dislocations) indicate big problems in an economy. But politicians know they are a great short term way to garner millions of votes from the uneducated masses.  #4- The truth about “Smart Meters” in Latin America: #5- Today a Gringa lady listener appraises us of another bad male Latino habit that North Americans will never get used to.  #6-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018.  Expat Files - 03.25.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #745- SUN, MAR 25- (03-25-2018): #1- TWENTY SOLID reasons why I DO NOT recommend Mexico for anything but the occasional all-inclusive sun and fun resort package deal I know, I know, we’ve been down this twisted road before but today we’ll be going into much greater detail. This discussion’s for those of you who refuse to see the writing on the wall or haven’t been to the beautiful white sand Mexican beaches lately and haven’t seen the occasional decapitated head wash up on shore.  #2- How do gringos and expats make good solid friends in the land of superficial gringo wanabees? Expat wanabees and gonnabees want to know: if they live “off the tourist trail” and are in minimal contact with gringos it might be very difficult to find like-minded friends to bond and hang with. If you consider the fact that most gringos end up living in gated communities, that means they are probably surrounded by many superficial pin-headed gringo wanabees that can afford the gated community lifestyle (sound familiar?) Will they be your new friends? Hope not, but there must be some fun, educated, deep, thinkers out there somewhere, right?
