Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #743- SUN, MAR 18- (03-18-2018): #1- School shootings in Latin America: Do they happen south of the border too? If so how frequently. Yes they do happen but the way they happen and the circumstances will certainly surprise you…   #2- Owning guns and ammo in Latin America: Yes you can. Here are the general rules, regs and requirements for gringos and expats. However there are 3 or 4 Latin countries with gun laws so strict it’s very difficult for anyone to jump through the hoops. Wouldn’t you know it, just like Chicago or Washington DC, the Latin countries with the strictest gun laws have the highest homicide rates.         #3- Some tips for “Off the Tourist Trail” expats involved in Latin/Gringo romances- with an emphasis on the case when neither party speaks the other’s language: Note that just a few years back such relationships were extremely frustrating and near impossible to maintain, especially by phone. Wow have things changed!   #4-Sometmes gringos and expats (especially the older ones) throw in the towel and say, “I give up. I’ve had it. I’m NOT learning Spanish. It’s too much trouble and I’m doing ok without it”. What then? That’s the subject of today’s “boots on the ground” story.   #5-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018. #1- Sage advice for gringos and expats whose idea of a “Plan B” is to live “off the grid” or partially “off the grid”   #2- TEN things you really must know about Latin American electric power distribution, service, maintenance and the power grid in general   #3-Internet and smartphone service in Latin America: There are so many options and providers, it’s confusing to try and dissect the various internet plans and packages. Even if your Spanish is pretty good and you think you’ve selected a good plan, a newer, better and cheaper plan is bound to come along in the next few months.   #4- More on Latin American Internet and Smartphone plans: The big question? Should you elect the usual 18 month contract, or the much more anonymous “pay as you go” monthly plan?  Expat Files - 03.11.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #741- SUN, MAR 11- (03-11-2018): #1- 5 solid reasons why I don’t much recommend Nicaragua anymore as an outstanding “Plan B” for gringos and expats. Here’s why…   #2- Today we discuss why so many gringos and expats come down intending to de-stress and uncomplicate their lives then they jump right back on another kind of treadmill: Sure, some of us are type “A” and just programmed that way but there's more …   #3-What Cuba’s healthcare system is really like: The outside world seems overly impressed by their purported high level of medical care as well as the fact that Cuba exports thousands of well-trained doctors to other countries. That kind of publicity has been a great a feather in the hat of the Castro regime right? Well before you jump on that bandwagon…   #4- TEN more very good reasons why the good life “Latin American style” can mostly be found in the “altiplano” regions.   #5- By popular demand, today we have Part 2 of the many loves of Expat Eddie:   #6-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #740- FRI, MAR 09- (03-09-2018): #1- Everyone wants the lowdown on when Gringos and Gringas have intimate relationships with Latinos/Latinas: Romance, mating, dating and relationships are a funny crazy business most anywhere even more so in Latin America. Today we discuss the finer points of mixed gringo/Latin love matches as well as the major hurdles and problems one is likely to encounter along the way.     #2- Our Gringo hypocrisies in action: We talk a great deal about how cool it is to be able to afford a full time maid or gardener on the average measly social security check. Why do you think that’s possible? Because of the vast underpaid, under-educated underclass living from day to day ready and willing to work for peanuts. Funny thing though, when we lived up in the states most of us thought our own bosses and/or companies were cheap-ass exploiters of us- the working classes too. So are we not hypocrites?     #3- By popular request we have Expat Eddie checking in with the true story of how a nondescript laid back gringo like himself was so quickly able to win the heart of a Latin American runway model. Amazingly enough, some years back when they first met she spoke no English (except the phrase “nice to meet you”) and he had a 2nd grader’s  command of about 20 words of Spanish. Sure on his part it was the “Gringo Advantage” but not completely, since Eddie has brown eyes.   #4-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #739- SUN, MAR 04- (03-04-2018): #1- Car Accidents in Latin America: What you definitely need to know if you’re in a car accident and the other guy ends up in the hospital. Heed this advice or you just might end up spending a few uncomfortable days in a seedy Latin jail.   #2- The Chinese are moving into a few choice Latin countries in very big way: Latinos who own and operate large business are beginning to feel the heat from the snowballing Chinese competition. Even Latin governments and crooked politicians, who’ll take a handout and bribe from almost anyone, see that the Chinese drive a hard bargain. Their dough comes with strings attached and a big slice of the action.    #3- Are Latin American Airlines safe? How do they stack up against the travel and safety records of the first-world big boys?    #4-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar . It will take place from Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday, July 12th 2018.  Expat Files - 03.02.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #738- FRI, MAR 02- (03-02-2018): #1- The Latin sense of Humor: What Latinos find funny and humorous truly escapes most of us gringos and expats. Though some slapstick and physical humor is universal, how then is it we can sit down and watch Latin TV comedy programs for hours on end and never once crack a smile? Most of us see Latin comedy as beyond tedious and embarrassingly juvenile but do keep our mouths shut. That’s simply good form when you’re a guest in a foreign country. Problem is Latin humor mostly consists of junior high school level jokes along with seriously bawdy, sexist and racial overtones. That sort of stuff would get one in big PC trouble if translated and aired on stateside TV. Because it’s more amateurishly embarrassing than funny, gringos almost never seriously split a gut laugh at any translation of a Latino joke (and vice versa). Today we attempt to explain it all by citing a few “lost in translation” examples.   #2- DYK that Middle East Muslims and African refugees –as so called “tourists”- are arriving in South America in unprecedented numbers? Most of them never leave. Of course many are trying to get to the USA and about 20% do make the journey and supposedly get through. So then what about the rest who don’t and stay behind in Latin America? Should we gringos and Expats be worried? Well it turns out there are just two Latin countries that allow the vast majority of Museums and African refugees to enter pretty much unimpeded. They are Brazil and Ecuador. Today you’ll get the skinny on what many Latinos see as a revolting development and how it’s affecting other Latin countries who prohibit such open boarder measures.         #3-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” seminar. The dates will be Saturday, July 7th thru Thursday July, 12th 2018. To get on the early bird discount list and receive the latest updates just send an email to www.theexpatfies@gmail.com and put the word “seminar” in the subject line.       #5- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your exit plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America.  Expat Files - 02.25.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #737- SUN, FEB 25- (02-25-2018): #1- If you drive in Latin America, you'll hit many potholes and suffer many annoying flat tires. Worse yet, in time your wheel rims will get damaged and pitted by the many pothole impacts. Eventually the tire rims will become slightly eccentric and not allow the tire to seal properly. That means buying a new rim or two, and if you have newer nicer car, original rims could cost hundreds. So in our first “boots on the ground” story today you’ll see it doesn’t have to work out that way. There's a very cheap work around, and here's the tip…      #2- Cost of Living and real estate "bubble" update in the Latin cities and burbs: There are amazing rental opportunities popping up all over the place due to massive overbuilding and excessive house and apartment supply. That’s especially true in the higher end housing market- the places gringos and expats are always on the lookout for. Fortunately for us, thousands of newer and even brand-new residential towers, condos and townhouses are sitting vacant, and have been for months. Still new units are continuously come on line and in vast numbers. Very very bad for clueless owners and developers but a golden opportunity for gringos and expats looking to rent. Today we have another “boots on the ground” story that says it all…   #3-Announcing Johnny’s next “Latin American Insider” in early July 2018.  Expat Files - 02.23.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #736- FRI, FEB 23- (02-23-2018): #1- It’s a small world after all: Gringos and expats find out quite soon that in Latin America many things like sinks, toilets, stairs and doors are pint-sized. But that’s not all. So are cloths and clothing sizes. That means apparel selection and cloths shopping can be a constant problem for many big, tall, supersized and even normal-sized gringos and expats. Today we offer some tips.       #2- Those famous paca stores have a reputation as being for the poor and lower classes. Are they worth checking out? In a word “yes” but not all of them are. Again its location, location, location. Today we have some tips and recommendations for gringos and expats shopping for cloths and today’s “boots on the ground” story.   #3- A few words concerning certain types of classist, pompous, English speaking Latin people you’re bound to meet along the way. I prefer to avoid such people myself and suggest you do so too. However when you first arrive and your Spanish sucks you will encounter them on a regular basis though soon enough you will see through the crap and the posing. Sure I know, everyone’s got defects but…….    #4- You’ll often see Indigenous ladies doing laundry in streams, rivers, pilas and wash basins. Its because they can’t afford a washing machine or the laundromat, right? Well, you’d assume so but it’s not that simple…   #5- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America.  Expat Files - 02.18.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #735- SUN, FEB 18- (02-18-2018): #1- Dissecting the gringo price phenomena: or how locals constantly pull the wool over the eyes of newbie expats and gringos. Local souvenir and trinket sellers manage to double and triple team gringos, often convincing them to buy things for 4 and even 5 times their “off the tourist” trail value. The more gringos in a given area the more prevalent the problem. Of course most gringos are happy with their little purchases and don’t know what hit them till someone mentions it after the fact. Often they never find out at all and sometimes it’s better that way. Why ruin a nice vacation over a $10 doll you later discover in a Cleveland Walmart for 5 bucks.   #2- How USA franchises kick ass in Latin America and why there are still amazing opportunities and niches if you want to get into the game. It's the subject of today’s ‘boots on the ground ‘story.   #3- Those hard concrete and tile Latin floors are everywhere and can be hard on a person suffering leg, hip or joint problems. Today we talk about possible solutions.     #4- Set up a one-on-one personal Phone/SKYPE consult with Johnny by first downloading the “Plan B” consult/questionnaire at: www.TheNewExpat.com   #5- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America.  Expat Files - 02.16.18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:00

Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #734- FRI, FEB 16- (02-16-2018): #1- The gringo “sucker” setup: A short primer on how some fresh new gringo expats literally set themselves up to be gouged and/or ripped off.   #2- A few words about so- called Latin “Helicopter” Schools If you recall, they’re high-end private k-12 schools that generally have a few real USA trained gringo teachers (a typical low-paying but enjoyable, fall back gringo employment opportunity). Did you know that many of these schools are not just 100% bi-lingual but 100% tri-lingual?   #3- Given that by our standards most Latins are quite poor and less educated, and for some of us expats and gringos it’s a special conundrum as to why so many Latin grade school kids are still so very polite, civil and respectful of other people and their property. You might assume it should be just the opposite....   #4- Latinos have a high school drop-out rate that’s severe, and there’s an epidemic of illiteracy and semi-literacy in older Latin adults   #5 –BEWARE of cocky gringo and expat know-it-alls. They’re a dime a dozen on the gringo tourist trail. Yes, the show can be amusing but….     #6- Captain Mango gets snookered by another crazy Latin superstition,   #7- Set up a one-on-one personal Phone/SKYPE consult with Johnny by first downloading the “Plan B” consult/questionnaire at: http://www.thenewexpat.com/   #8- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #733- SUN, FEB 11- (02-11-2018):  #1- A group of smart Latinos have discovered there’s “sure thing” money in giving cryptocurrency seminars. You wouldn’t believe how popular these things are. Everyone wants to get in on the so-called “easy money”. Yup like the old California gold rush days of the 1900’s, the guys that made consistent dough weren’t the miners but the ones that sold the picks and shovels.   #2- A sad expose’ on lower class Latin macho men. Specifically the bad manners and habits they bring along with them when they enter the USA   #3- EMP risks: what might happen in Latin America if the power grid goes down.     #4 -Solar power system sizing in Latin America. It all depends whether you’re living in a beach house, the lowlands or in the altiplano. In each case there are a variety of calculations and not-so-obvious details to consider.   #5- More “boots on the ground” tips to consider when going solar and off-the-grid in Latin America   #6- Today we describe a few surprisingly common errors in Latin building construction and techniques that most gringos and expats don’t find out about until it’s too late  #7- Set up a one-on-one personal Phone/SKYPE consult with Johnny by first downloading the “Plan B” consult/questionnaire at: www.TheNewExpat.com #8- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #732- FRI, FEB 09- (02-09-2018):  #1- What happens when Gringos and Expats come up against Latin superstitions? When faced with  firmly held Latin superstitions, its best to just watch, shut up and play along. Don’t argue or try using logic. Sure you’ll win the intellectual battle but in the end lose the war. Brains do not stump superstition.   #2- Regarding Latin macho men, extreme male pride, and some things you can expect to see when living in the testosterone fueled Latin culture.   #3- Driveway chickens and their little eggs     #4-When squatters invade your property and what to do is the subject of today's “boots in the ground” story .   #5- Because of the Latin macho culture, you’ll hear talk about family feuds and stories about personal revenge. That’s especially true since Latin men are serial cheaters and inevitably get caught. Someone has to pay the piper.   #6- How much does marijuana cost worldwide? Where is it most expensive? Where is it dirt cheap? You’ll be surprised!     #7- Set up a one-on-one personal Phone/SKYPE consult with Johnny by first downloading the “Plan B” consult/questionnaire at: www.TheNewExpat.com #8- Johnny’s new “Expat Essentials Course” is a blueprint for your “Plan B” and the best way kick-start your plan before getting boots on the ground in Latin America. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #731- SUN, FEB 04- (02-04-2018):  #1- Don’t panic if when using a Latin ATM machine the dough doesn’t pop out. Its rare but it can happen. But then what to do? It’s part of today’s “boots on the ground” story.   #2- Using Latin ATM machines: A few choice tips.   #3- An update on recouping and maintaining some privacy and anonymity in Latin America.      #4- The “not so creative” Latin art of linguistic insults and curses: Street talk Spanish style.   #5- Autumn/spring relationships: 20+ year age spreads in couples are fairly common in Latin America. Sure, the stereotype is a young, pretty, barefoot Latina with a potbellied, balding older guy (with money). However it’s a bit more complicated than that. In fact there have been many hit Latin songs on that very theme.   #6- The sad truth about Latin charities and NGO’s     #7- Set up a one-on-one personal Phone/SKYPE consult with Johnny by first downloading the “Plan B” consult/questionnaire at:http://www.thenewexpat.com/    #8- Check out my “The Expat Files” You Tube channel. See all the fun slides and photos that go along with each show. Descriptions- EXPAT FILES SHOW #730- FRI, FEB 02- (02-02-2018):  #1- Update on the use and abuse of USD funny-money in Latin America:  What denominations of USD are most commonly and easily accepted? How Latin banks are dealing with the influx of US dough. What about dollar acceptance at small tiendas and businesses? And finally, a word on counterfeit dough in Latin America.       #2- Until the recent 21st century influx of gringos and expats, Latin America had been specifically populated by shorter, smaller people. That means there are many physical obstacles normal sized gringos and expats must be aware of or suffer the consequences. Always remember, if you’re careless and get hurt… there’s no one to sue. So beware of uneven stairs, cramped entrances and low-hanging door jams and such.   #3- When 1st- world construction is NOT 1st- world construction. Don't believe the Latin builder/architect hype about gringo construction standards cuz it just ain't so.    #4-Ten annoying things you’re bound to discover only AFTER you’ve moved in to that nice so- called 1st world gated community.   #5- An expose of the dangers and risks of Bitcoin users and Bitcoin miners in Venezuela and how the black market in cryptocurrencies is keeping the upper middle-class afloat  #6- Set up a one-on-one personal Phone/SKYPE consult with Johnny by first downloading the “Plan B” consult/questionnaire at: www.TheNewExpat.com #7- Check out my “The Expat Files” You Tube channel. See all the fun slides and photos that go along with each show.
