'Outwitters' Hits the App Store, Here's a Primer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:40

After what probably felt like a lifetime of drawing, animating, and otherwise supporting little circular blobs for Tilt to Live and its billions of updates, One Man Left decided it was time to move on. Its next project, which just hit the App Store, is an artistically and mechanically brilliant strategy game called Outwitters [Free]. These two games couldn't be more functionally different, and that was the point. Outwitters is the end result of the team's desire to express itself in a title that didn't have anything to do with dots. In a weird way I kinda hope that these guys get bored more often. Outwitters feels like what it was for the team on a practical level: a breath of fresh air. It's also scary good. On this week's episode of The TouchArcade Show bonus edition, we talk about Outwitters with One Man Left's Alex and Adam. As we were talking, I started thinking about how we were going to angle the podcast. I didn't have to think long. By the end of the show, I realized we had inadvertently created something of an oral primer for the game. iTunes Link: The TouchArcade Show Zune Marketplace: TouchArcade.com Podcasts RSS Feed: The TouchArcade Show Direct Link: TouchArcadeShow-Bonus-040.mp3, 12.5MB Describing how this game plays is a lot like describing why Laocoön And His Sons is so radical. Yeah, the snakes are neat and Laocoön is ripped out of his mind, but all the good reasons are buried in the details. Outwitter's touches are what makes it pop, the raw mechanics just serve the greater strategy in the game. At its core, Outwitters is a traditional turn-based strategy game. The goal is to defend your base, while bashing your opponent's to oblivion. You do this with troops, which you can build at the beginning of every turn. Each of the three factions in the game have a same assortment of five soldier classes. There's a sniper, which moves slowly but can do tons of damage at range. There's a soldier, which has a middle-of-the-line attributes. There's also a damage-dealing heavy character. And there's a medic and a scout. Factions all have a sixth class, but these are unique soldiers. The Scallywags have a super sniper, basically, while the robot faction has a troop that can use mind control. At the beginning of each turn, you are given several Wit points. These are the game's currency. When you move a character, whatever the range, that absorbs a specific amount of points from that pool. When you spawn a new creature, that also eats at that total. You can bank these points or use them all, but you can only spawn, move, and attack a couple of times per round. This is one of those details, and navigating this Wits structure is one of the game's purest joys. It keeps the action focused, but the strategy complex. Each turn begs several questions. What's my opponent doing and how will I react? Should I bank these points and build up for a major defensive move? Should I spill all of them into a few spawns? Wits also check your ambitions. If you move a heavy, then you might not be able to move that medic by your circle of soldiers. Of course, there's also scenarios where you can overcommit. If you move to engage or even defend in a flanking maneuver, there's nothing stopping your opponent if he wants to rush a now much less defended base. On the other hand, if you move your troops just enough, you can squash a player's offensive moves because you kept back. I lose in Outwitters a lot, and it's usually because I'm not thinking of stuff like this. On the podcast, we lightly discuss a few things that I've tried. In my first few games I tried to pull something similar to a Zerg rush. In later games, I built tons of heavies in an attempt to do the same, but with stronger dudes. After playing for a while, I kind of realized that these strategies are too simple. Small mixes are best, but you've got to build in a [...]

Imangi Tells Us How 'Temple Run: Brave' Came to Be | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:11

Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova were just tourists the first time they visited Pixar Animation Studios. The next time? They were game developers, pitching ideas to Disney and Pixar for an upcoming collaboration called Temple Run: Brave [Free]. Keith and Natalia are two of the three people behind Imangi Studios -- the house that built Harbor Master [Free / Free (HD)], Max Adventure [Free], and Temple Run [Free] to name a few. Speaking with TouchArcade earlier this afternoon, the husband and wife team expressed just how cool it was to work with Pixar, and they dug into how a collaboration between a massive company and an already busy three-man studio was made a reality. iTunes Link: The TouchArcade Show Zune Marketplace: TouchArcade.com Podcasts RSS Feed: The TouchArcade Show Direct Link: TouchArcadeShow-Bonus-039.mp3, 15.8MB "It was pretty awesome," Keith tells us, describing the opportunity to talk with the dudes at Pixar and Disney Mobile. "Natalia and I have always been huge fans of Pixar and all the things they've produced over the years. They make fantastic movies. The Disney Mobile group approached us about doing some sort of a tie-in with Temple Run." After viewing a teaser trailer for Brave, Imangi was sold on the idea of Temple Run: Brave. It's a good fit. At its core, Temple Run is a game about running in a confined space. Brave's forest and mountain settings are functionally similar to Temple Run's Incan-inspired maze. Keith points out a few other similarities to us, including the protagonists' hair colors and the fact that they're always on the run. "We definitely had some surreal moments while working with them. They're Pixar! They do such a fantastic job of appealing to young audiences as well as adults. Their movies always span the whole range of emotions, from happiness to sadness, to everything in-between. Working with them, I think there was a couple of times where we just had to pinch ourselves and, you know, ask is this really happening?" "Pixar and Disney, these two big corporations that make all sorts of awesome stuff, are working with our small little studio of three people," Keith says. Natalia echoes this, and mentions that Imangi got to watch a version of the movie before it began planning out its video game take on it. As excited as everyone was about the potential partnership, the reality of Imangi's size threatened the project. There are just three dudes at the studio. That makes it hard to work on a lot of side projects and tie-ins. To make this work, Disney Mobile provided the resources and the heavy lifting, while Imangi would dished out the creative guidance. Imangi positions Brave as an addition to the Temple Run universe, as opposed to a follow-up or spiritual successor. It's a fair description. Brave is, at its core, is Temple Run with a few tweaks that differentiate it but doesn't separate it. In the game, you control Brave's heroine, Merida, as she runs through a forested area in an attempt to escape a large bear named Mordu. Rendered in 3D, you swipe left or right to take optional paths when they're presented, tilt your device to pick up coins, and swipe up or down to avoid obstacles like tree branches, which litter the escape path. As you play, you use the coins you've collected to level passive power-ups. Simple stuff, right? We've got a video of it in action below: "I think we wanted to stay true to the Temple Run gameplay that everyone has kind of grown to love," Keith tells us. "We didn't want to change much. But we also wanted to give some new elements to make it tie in more to Brave. The archery thing -- archery is a huge theme in the movie. From the get-go, we started brainstorming ideas about how we could work that into the gameplay." "You're going to see more stuff kinda coming down the pipe here," Keith teases. [...]

D3: 'Pocket Heroes' Devs Talk To Us About Delays, Dreams, And Direction In Our Latest Bonus Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:55

A couple of years ago, Brandon and Cody Pollet formed F5 Games as a clever way to sneak into Electronic Entertainment Expo and experience the gaming event firsthand. Both were college students with big ideas, and they ended up leaving it with even bigger ones. E3 gave their studio a soul. When the App Store exploded later, the duo discovered a direction. In 2011, Brandon and Cody went back to the Los Angeles-based event that got them dreaming big in the first place to reveal Pocket Heroes. They describe it on this week's bonus episode of the TouchArcade Show as the game they've always wanted to make, and it's been a long time coming. Pocket Heroes hits either later this month or early June, almost a full year since the duo initially showed off their idea. iTunes Link: The TouchArcade Show Zune Marketplace: TouchArcade.com Podcasts RSS Feed: The TouchArcade Show Direct Link: TouchArcadeShow-Bonus-036.mp3, 17.4MB Pocket Heroes is a little like what would happen if Words With Friends [$2.99] and Dungeons & Dragons were slammed together repeatedly. In Pocket Heroes, you'll battle foes and explore dungeons alongside other users asynchronously and level up and manage the skills of your priestess, Dwarven mech, rogue, or paladin in the process. As you'll see, it's also rocking a gorgeous lo-fi art style, but with specific enhancements that make it feel new and relevant on phones. Demoing the game for the first time at the event wasn't an intentionally poetic move. It also wasn't a coordinated reveal drawn up in an elaborate, year-long marketing plan. Brandon and Cody just wanted to see if people liked their idea before they committed to it. They needed a push to believe in what they had. Their idea was big, bold, and it seems like they knew it was going to push them creatively. "We were pretty hesitant to show it off," Brandon tells TouchArcade. "We made Independence Night [Free] and then we made IncrediBlox [$.99]. They weren't huge successes on the App Store." "We were kind of at the point -- do we have what it takes to figure this thing out, do we know how to make something that people are going to like? So, we decided to go to E3 and show it off. This is the game we've always thought we should be making. Let's show it off and see if people are interested." "We did, and then we got this huge response," Brandon says. "I don't regret showing it off as early as we did. I don't think it would have ever been made if we hadn't gotten that feedback from everybody." It's been a heck of a ride for Pocket Heroes fans, in part because Brandon and Cody didn't realize what they had, but also because what they had planned was too ambitious for its own good. Brandon explains. "When we first started mapping out Pocket Heroes, it was called The Black Fortress. We had a very specific idea of how it was going to play out." Brandon and Cody soon discovered that having underpowered heroes tackling tremendous evil in what would have been an end-game dungeon wasn't, in fact, awesome. The game needed progression, and it needed to be more consumable. So, the game has been split into simpler, more digestible parts. What you'll see in a couple of weeks is the just first of four chapters. The rest will be added over the year. The last chapter will be, roughly, the game Brandon and Cody originally designed a year ago. They'll see their original vision through, though it might be close to next E3 before we see it all. How fitting, right? On this week's bonus episode of The TouchArcade Show, Brandon and Cody talk freely about all of this and further elaborate on the delay between sneak peek and reveal of Pocket Heroes. They also dive into what sets their apart from the rest of the RPG herd. Other topics include the games that inspired the development of Pocket Heroes and what F5 [...]
