Here in the United States, we're approaching the Thanksgiving holiday, with Christmas soon after.  For non-believers spending holiday time in the company of religious family and friends, it's often a difficult and stressful time. In this show, we talk a little bit about such challenges, how to overcome (or avoid) them, and we take some time to celebrate and give thanks for the good stuff in our godless lives. It was founded by Anton LaVey in the 1960s, called the "Order of the Trapezoid," which later became the governing body of the Church of Satan.  It brandishes the name of a dark entity considered God's enemy in many religions.  It has its own priesthood.  It has a coda for living, as well as a list of "sins" humans should avoid..  It has been the subject of much controversy, often spoken of in whispers cloaked in fear. Religious funerals are almost always filled with reverent, lofty sermons and messages about a reunion of loved ones in Paradise. But what about those who are non-believers?  How does the atheist or agnostic wish to be memorialized?  What kind of ceremony or service would he/she want?  What are the attributes of some atheist funerals you've attended?  Or do you want a funeral at all? Acts of genuine good happen every moment of every day.  Human beings can be capable of wonderful acts of generosity and goodwill, of love and sacrifice, of genuine goodness. So often these acts are cloaked in accolades, not for those involved, but for the invisible deities of archaic holy books.  A physician treats a patient toward good health, and the family thanks God.  A couple qualifies with the bank to purchase their first home, and they thank God.  Someone wins $50 with a convenience store lottery ticket, and he thanks God. This show deals with gratitude, where it is directed (and misdirected).  It's a chance to put the spotlight on those who genuinely bring about the positive.  It's a chance to Thank Goodness. Many who have come out of religious families and cultures formally announced their rejection of superstition by writing letters/emails to their families and friends. The letters weren't necessary written because these apostates were unwilling to say the words in person, but quite often they provide a comprehensive, detailed, measured and permenant record of such an important decision.  In this episode, our listeners are welcome to share the "Coming Out as an Atheist" letters with us (ommitting any elements too personal, of course).  Callers may read their letters, or send them in email form (with any elaboration and backstory needed) to editor@thethinkingatheist.com. The Skeptic's Dictionary defines "Woo" (or "Woo Woo") as: ideas considered irrational or based on extremely flimsy evidence or that appeal to mysterious occult forces or powers. "Woo" is concerned with emotions, mysticism, or spiritualism; other than rational or scientific.  It often takes legitimate scientific theories or concepts and spins them into thick, often spiritual assertions about the world and universe.  Sometimes it's just a nonsense claim with zero evidence and zero credibility.  And it's everywhere.
