His impact on India cannot be disputed and he ruled for nearly fifty years. He was born to a royal family in exile, as his father Emperor Humayan was driven out of India and into Iran by Sher Shah Suri. Akbar was born in Umerkot in present-day Pakistan and grew up there while his parents regrouped in Persia. Delhi was reconquered by Humayan in 1555 and he died months later. Thirteen year old Akbar was proclaimed the new emperor and his guardian, Bairam Khan, ruled until Akbar reached his majority. Akbar expanded the empire of his grandfather by attacking and conquering Malwa, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Bengal. He established a new capital city at Fatehpur Sikri, but the city was later abandoned and the capital returned to Agra. Akbar was an organizer and he restructured the taxation system and the military. In his early days, he was intolerant of other faiths, including other Muslim sects. He destroyed Hindu temples and espoused a bigoted policy towards Hindus. Over time he mellowed and he became known as a religious reformer and open-minded ruler.
