Today in the wake of the earthquakes which hit Turkey and Syria, Deborah is delving into the world of search and rescue dogs. What makes a dog a candidate for this work? Deborah describes an experiment which tested pet dogs and their ability to rescue their owners and the results are astonishing. Sadly, and ironically, in the past six months if you searched ‘rescue’, ‘dog’ and ‘Turkey’ what you’d have seen were hundreds of purebred Golden Retriever pet dogs dumped into the streets of Turkey needing rescue and rehoming to families overseas, often in the U.S.; And now the people of Turkey need rescuing by dogs which are being sent from all over the world to help. Deborah is delighted by this new software that simplifies breeding admin and forecasting like nothing ever before. Mauritz Hansen explains how the software evolved to include all the paperwork and the time-consuming tracking of dogs, heats, matings, and health facts replacing a very big hassle for breeders to track all the info on every dog and then maintain good records. Deborah points out that purebred dogs are vital to the world as they are needed for many finely skilled tasks we humans rely on such as seeing for the blind, detecting guns, or hunting and retrieving and that even though mutts are fantastic pets, there will always be a need for good purebred dogs. Don’t pick a dog just on looks, since the breeds were made for special tasks, Deb advises, pick by what they were meant to do and how that suits your lifestyle. Pick a retriever or water dog If you love to be in and around water and pick a companion dog if you love to sit on the sofa! First Deb Wolfe tackles the many problems of a dog called Daisy who jumps up on people, poops on the floor, wails when alone and won’t come when called. Daisy was well behaved until recently and Deb tells her owner how she can get back on track plus expands this advice to help everyone with a dog who can’t be alone, jumps on people or poops inside. Daisy also has extreme fear of the car which was alleviated completely when the owner followed Deb’s advice on a previous show to partner Daisy with a car loving dog for short happy park trips, but now Daisy won’t get in the car alone and that other dog isn’t available always. When to free feed when not to free feed and how to help a puppy learn not to food fight, plus how to deal with a grass easting dog who has a troubled tummy. The jumping up dog is a rude creature that doesn’t get the love and attention and playtime he should so let’s teach our dogs to sit for attention especially from children and that way he can be a polite playmate that is always welcome and never scolded.

The sad passing of Queen Elizabeth is a chance to remember her many dogs and the love of dogs the Royal family exhibits to this day with their many dogs. How many Royals own cats? Even with their wealth and access to trainers and handlers the royals have had some pet tragedy that Deborah explains is sometimes unavoidable. Deborah Wolfe interviews Linda Osada, Dog Care Support Coordinator for Elder Dogs locally to discuss their work in many cities helping many dogs and their elderly owners. Sometimes a dog is needing grooming, or Vet care and the senior just can’t get the dog to the place it must go and other times its walks that make all the difference. When a senior needs to go to hospital even for something minor often the dog has nowhere to go! Elder dog provides transport, walks, foster care, grooming, and help with getting pet supplies to the elderly when they need it most.
