There are tons of spoilers in this one, since it would be impossible to discuss without going over the story. Unfortunately, a lot of the satire and humor is lost in translation. We also read a lot of reviews that agreed it's hard to understand the movie unless you have lived in Japan and understand life in post war Japan. This being said, we both really enjoyed the journey that was this movie; many subtle bits of humor, a little bit of sadness, and a whole lot of craziness as far as the monsters were concerned.
