Geek Actually Podcast

Summary: Do you like to sit around and 'geek out'? What do I mean? You know, sit around with a few friends and talk about you favourite subjects in as much detail as you like, because you all speak the same language. We here at Geek Actually have two great loves: the entertainment industry and the tech industry, so we thought to ourselves, let's geek out and record it. As film geeks and tech geeks, we love our subjects and talk passionately about our stuff. Come and have some fun and join us every Friday. Just a warning though, because we speak candidly about our topics and we approach film and tech reviewing from a "real" point of view, this podcast has to carry an "explicit tag" for infrequent bad language.

 Film Actually Ep092 – Brave | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:57

This week David, Josh & Richard take a look at the latest film from Pixar, Brave. Plus a quick talk about Seth MacFarlane's first feature film Ted, What We've Been Watching, Josh's Bargain Basement and a brand new Lists of Five - Five of the Best of the Year... So Far. Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Richard Gray The news section is now officially it's own show called Film Actually News. This show carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language. Listen or download it here or subscribe to it on iTunes Your Show Notes Follow: What We’ve Been Watching: A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week. David and Richard talk about Ted and in Josh's Bargain Basement he talks about Rising Sun. Feature Film Review ‘Brave’ directed by Brenda Chapman, Mark Andrews & Steve Purcell. It is written by Brenda Chapman, Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell & Irene Mecchi. It stars the voice talent of Billy Connolly, Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd & Craig Furguson. Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, "Brave" features Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of royalty. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right. Source: Walt Disney Pictures Our Verdict: A beautiful looking film (does Pixar know how to make an ugly film?) that falls short of the greatness that Pixar films used to be. Fun and whimsical but ultimately disappointing. Watch the trailer here: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/disney/brave/  Lists of Five This week our Lists of Five: Five of the Best of the Year...  Film Actually Ep091 – Snow White & Cabin in the Woods | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:57

This week David, Josh & Richard have a pair of reviews, first up "Snow White and the Huntsman" followed by the Joss Whedon produced "The Cabin in the Woods". Plus What We've Been Watching and a brand new Lists of Five - What Was Old Is New Again (or Films That Redefined Their Genres). Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Richard Gray The news section is now officially it's own show called Film Actually News. Look for it on the feed because it is loud, fast and under thirty minutes... or your money back. If you are an iTunes user, please leave a review. Your comments help us improve the show. This show carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language. Listen or download it here or subscribe to it on iTunes Your Show Notes: What We’ve Been Watching: A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week. This week Richard gives us the low down on the films in the Sydney Film Festival. Feature Film Review 1 ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ directed by Rupert Sanders. It is written by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini. It stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Ian McShane, Sam Claflin, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan and Bob Hoskins. In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. Source: IMDB Our Verdict: A strikingly beautiful film that is ultimately a mess. The film is so busy stealing scenes from other movies it completely forgets to tell a cohesive story. In what universe is Kristen Stewart the fairest of them all? Watch the trailer here: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/snowwhiteandthehuntsman/ Feature Film Review 2 ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ directed by Drew Goddard. It is written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Amy Acker. Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods. Source: IMDB Spoiler Section: 00:42:33 - 00:54:31 - Fast forward this bit if you don't want to hear spoilers. Our Verdict: A clever reworking of a tired genre. Joss Whedon again proves that he is a master of genre bending. This is a must see movie. Watch the trailer here: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/thecabininthewoods/ Lists of Five This week our Lists of Five: What Was Old Is New Again (or Films That Redefined Their Genres). Feature Film Review ‘Men in Black 3’ directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. It is written by Etan Cohen based on the Malibu Comic by Lowell Cunningham. Our Verdict: A good return to form after the not-so-good part 2. A shaky start but as soon as we hit the 60s the film hits its stride.  Film Actually Ep088 – Red Tails | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:15

Better late than never, here is the new episode of Film Actually. This week David, Josh & Richard share their opinions on the new George Lucas produced war movie "Red Tails". Plus What We've Been Watching and a brand new Lists of Five - Five Special Effects Scenes That Made Us Go Wow! Listen or download it here or subscribe to it on iTunes Your Show Notes: What We’ve Been Watching: A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week including Josh's Bargain Basement. Feature Film Review ‘Red Tails’ directed by Anthony Hemingway and produced by George Lucas. It is written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder based on story by John Ridley in turn based on a book by John B. Holway. It stars Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristen Wilds, Elijah Kelley, Ne-Yo, Kevin Phillips, Daniela Ruah and Brian Cranston. Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history. Source: 20th Century Fox Our Verdict: A great subject matter that is given a weak treatment here. An okay first half and some amazing visual effects is let down by a poorly conceived second half and some truly terrible dialogue. Watch the trailer here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/redtails/ Lists of Five This week our Lists of Five: Five Special Effects Scenes That Made Us Go Wow! Whether the film is good or bad, sometimes a great special effects scene can just take your breath away at how well it was conceived and executed on screen, here are five examples.
