Physics Fund in Sushant Singh Rajput's name to support students studying astrophysics is the best tribute to his memory | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:06:01

Recently, the UC Berkeley physics department received $35,000 from an anonymous donor to create the Sushant Singh Rajput Memorial Fund in Physics. SSR was a National Physics Olympiad winner and was passionate about astrophysics as well. UC Berkeley is known for its astrophysics graduate program and the fund will help support campus graduate students studying astrophysics. In my opinion, spreading education, enabling someone to study further could be the best tribute to anyone's memory. According to the just-released Oxfam’s ‘Inequality Virus Report,’ India's billionaires increased their wealth by 35% during the lockdown whereas millions lost their jobs during the same period. The first casualties when there is a wide gap in income levels is the attention to healthcare and education, mainly by the people at the lowest strata of society. It is time we put our priorities right and fix our system now!  Listen in! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kajmasterclass/message

Politics: Is India indeed "too much" of a democracy to its disadvantage? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:12:02

Controversy broke out early this week in India when it was reported that the country's apex planning body Niti Aayog's CEO Amitabh Kant had said at an event that  “tough” reforms are “very difficult in the Indian context,” as “we are too much of a democracy”. Later Mr. Kant clarified that he did not mean the way it was reported and that he was speaking in the context of reforms in India via a vis China. Whatever that was all about, the larger point I discuss here in this podcast is as to how much democracy becomes too much that it starts stalling the growth and development process in a country. Or is it that this is just an excuse used by political establishments at many places to propagate their line of thought or to hide their incompetencies and inefficiencies. India slipped 10 places to 51st position in the 2019 Democracy Index's global ranking, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit, which cited "erosion of civil liberties" in the country as the primary cause for the downtrend. Is it "too much democracy" or a "flawed" one as the index put it, that is stalling the process of reforms? Do we need more of it or less of it? Let's talk about this. Let's discuss this.  Maybe just a jab for Margaret Keenan but a big shot in the arm for billions' vaccine hopes | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:07:16

Margaret Keenan, a 90-year-old grandmother became the first person in the world to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine outside of a trial in Britain on Tuesday. She enthusiastically received the Pfizer-BioNTech shot at her local hospital, a week before she turns 91. This has given realistic hopes to billions across the globe of getting the vaccine soon that can help them get back to their lives like the one they lived not so long ago.  In my part of the world - the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine producer by volume, is close to signing a supply contract with the country’s central government and likely to fix prices at 250 rupees per dose of the vaccine, as per a report.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kajmasterclass/message

Latest Amazon rainforest deforestation a rude wake-up call for us all to save our planet | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:10:32

It's a rude wake-up call for us all. Brazil's environmental ministry has released preliminary figures showing that deforestation in the Amazon has hit its highest rate in a decade. Between August 2018 and July 2019, approximately 11,088 square kilometers of rainforest was destroyed, a 9.5 percent increase on the previous year.  The dense rainforests of Brazil consume an enormous amount of the world's Carbon Dioxide and release Oxygen in return. The latest data is big blow to all those who are fighting to save the environment and the planet - our only home. Faraway in India, high pollution is a big issue all around the year, especially in winters. According to the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago's Air Quality Life Index, the average Indian loses 5.2 years due to particulate pollution. India secured 168 rank in the 12th edition of the biennial Environment Performance Index (EPI Index 2020) — that measured the environmental performance of 180 countries — and was released by the Yale University in June 2020.  In 2018, India's rank was 177.  This Small Business Saturday let's pledge them more of our support especially during these hard pandemic times | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:09:17

Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and communities. There are 3 very important reasons why small businesses should thrive more 1) Every touch of theirs is personalized. They love to have a one to one connect with their buyers to know their likes and preferences. 2) Small businesses adapt very easily to changes. 3) Small businesses need you and your support more than ever. Small businesses get overlooked by many customers who get enticed by larger companies, and this can adversely affect the local economy in more negative ways than might appear on the surface level. This trend is on the rise almost everywhere in the world creating new challenges for local businesses, economy, and livelihoods.  According to the MSME Ministry’s FY19 annual report, the Indian MSME sector is dominated by micro-enterprises. India has 6.33 crore MSMEs out of which 6.30 crore -- 99.4 percent are micro-enterprises. This Small Business Saturday let's pledge our local businesses more of our support, especially during these hard Covid times.  Bharti Singh's arrest brings drugs issue and Sushant Singh Rajput case back into sharp national focus | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:11:17

Comedian Bharti Singh and her husband's arrest has brought into discussion once again the issue of the rising drug menace in Bollywood as well as in the country and a strong need for a check on this.  They were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) over alleged possession and use of marijuana and were granted bail by a Mumbai court today. Their arrest came as part of the NCB expanded probe into the alleged drug use in Bollywood, which started after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June.   In the last few months, top Bollywood actors - Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, Rakulpreet Singh, and Shraddha Kapoor - have been questioned by the NCB as a part of the probe. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kajmasterclass/message
