 Improving To Fail Better - Episode 17 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:18:08

In our last episode, we took a look at Stan Wawrinka's junior tennis career and the reputation that he was able to build for himself despite having to compete with Roger Federer, his countrymen who was also reveling in success at the time. Stan had plenty of game time with the big names - Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, and Murray - but found himself initially losing more than 40 games against these opponents. How do you use the top-level experiences you have had to come back stronger and win championships in a game where every momentum swing matters? We'll be taking a look at Wawrinka's philosophy and his professional career to see how he worked consistently to become a champion.  Resources: https://www.thesportscol.com/2015/08/improve-to-fail-better-the-fairy-tale-rise-of-stan-wawrinka/ https://www.atptour.com/en/news/wawrinka-monte-carlo-2022-feature

 Hanging In There - Episode 16 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:18:25

Even when you know you're succeeding or doing well at something, you may find another person who is consistently performing as well as(if not, better than) you. How important is it to stay confident in your abilities and ensure that you can stay level-headed even when you may be under the pump? In this episode, we'll see how Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka hung in there through most of his junior tennis career to eventually make it onto the big stage, despite most of his early performances being overshadowed by another Swiss player, Roger Federer. This is part 1 of a Stan Wawrinka feature, and we will be looking at some of his matches and more gameplay in our next episode!  Musical Resilience - Episode 15 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:10:42

Successful musical artists are able to host performances, be a part of concerts, and perform live on tours almost all times of the year. But how do they get to the point where they are comfortable with showcasing what they are singing? Perhaps music is a creative and unique way for these artists to display their resilience? We've discussed how resilience is strongly shaped by one's experience, and most of us can agree that artists enjoy writing songs about their feelings to convey emotions they may be experiencing at a given time. Tune in as we examine James Bay's hit song "Hold Back The River" and see how he was influenced by his first time live on tour to sort out the lyrics for his song.  Flexible Foundations - Episode 11 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:16:33

We've talked about the idea of being flexible and open to change while remaining rigid at heart. But if you are expected to deliver something for a client, you must take into account different stakeholders that may affected by your product. While it is not always easy to meet the requirements of every consumer, compromises can be made to facilitate development as best as possible.  In today's episode, we go through the construction and design process for the Golden Gate Bridge in California. We emphasize how a foundation needed to be established to ensure that construction could take place amid a Great Depression and additional financial challenges. Of course, we make sure to examine flexibility in the perspective of being resilient and resistant to change and adversary.  References:  History.com webpage - Golden Gate Bridge - https://www.history.com/topics/landmarks/golden-gate-bridge PBS.com webpage - Golden Gate Bridge - https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/goldengate-opposition/

 Evaluating Spaghetti - Episode 10 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:20:05

Curious to know what types of pasta I enjoy(in addition to spaghetti, of course)? Want a break from the resilience stories that we've been covering continuously? In this episode, I will be sharing some of my favorite sauces with spaghetti and other pastas that I enjoy. I will also discuss my favorite restaurants that serve spaghetti and pasta, and why I enjoy them. I will also be reflecting on The Spaghetti Podcast so far. We are about halfway through season 1, and making this podcast has helped me learn ways to become more flexible and open to change in real life. Stay tuned for more updates - I update a lot on Instagram(@thespaghettipodcast).  This episode is a bit lighthearted compared to previous episodes, one in which I will be offering my own personal take on the podcast thus far.

 Crisis Averted - Episode 9 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:17:47

This episode is a continuation of the 2020-21 Texas Power Crisis discussed in Episode 8. How can we best apply what we know about resilience to ensure that we can make the most out of a situation? Especially when so many people are affected by said situation all at once? In Episode 8, we heard from two survivors, Sheila and Loretta. We learned how they appreciated the services of the Austin Disaster Relief Network(ADRN) and were committed to do all they could to ensure that as many citizens of Texas got the help they needed. In this episode, we'll hear from another survivor, Levi. We will observe how Levi was flexible and open to change as he had to evacuate his apartment and flee to a hotel with limited supply within a moment's notice.  Once again, I would like to acknowledge Lauren Slusher's website for providing me with the information that I have discussed in this video. If you would like to read about these survivors or Lauren Slusher herself, I've listed the link to her personal page below. This link will direct users to Lauren Slusher's piece on Levi. These pages also contain pictures of the survivors and some of their possessions.  Lauren Slusher's Interview with Levi: https://laurenslusher.com/blog/austin-in-the-winter-storm-interview-with-levi/

 Coping With Nature - Episode 8 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:24:24

I feel that I can speak for a majority when I say I prefer extreme cold over extreme heat. However, I've been fortunate enough not to experience a natural disaster firsthand. There are often consequences of these storms that tend not to cross our mind. How does one cope if they have no heat or power to rely on electrical appliances? Today's episode focuses on the Texas power crisis during the 2020-21 winter. We'll first hear the firsthand account of a storm survivor Lauren Slusher who offered to assist the Austin Disaster Relief Network as a dispatcher to communicate with those in need more easily. Then, we'll hear from the two survivors that Lauren interviewed as part of a photo-audio project to bring awareness to the disasters of the Texas power crisis and how citizens had to help themselves. Previous episodes on this podcast have focused on ways to build up resilience, but this episode ties these ideas together when having to work urgently in order to save lives.  Here is Lauren Slusher's webpage discussing Austin, Texas in the winter storm of 2020-21 as well as highlighting firsthand stories of resilience from survivors. This is also Lauren's main webpage, so she has documented some of her other work on here: https://laurenslusher.com/blog/austin-in-the-winter-storm-stories-of-resilience/.  Setting a Standard - Episode 7 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:19:57

The Spaghetti Podcast is back! We will be recapping the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games! The Olympics never fail to leave me stunned. I revel at the fact that I can witness athletes move in extraordinary ways. But there is a lot that we don't see or hear about. Olympic athletes dedicate nearly their entire lives to the day they will perform at the Olympic Games. What is it about them that allows them to compete at the Olympic level - a level that no other human can compete at? In Episode 7, we will be taking a look at the U.S. National Gymnastics team, and explore the story of Sunisa Lee. We will also be observing the relationship Lee had with fellow teammate Simone Biles, and how they comforted each other prior to the 2020 Games held this past summer. Just like we can set standards with spaghetti, Olympic athletes set standards for themselves by competing in different environments and qualifiers ahead of the actual games.  The story of Suni Lee - https://www.elle.com/culture/a36503849/suni-lee-olympics-gymnastics-tokyo/\ Suni Lee's Olympic Routine - https://www.nbcolympics.com/news/relive-suni-lees-gold-medal-performance-womens-all-around Linktree for The Spaghetti Podcast - https://linktr.ee/thespaghettipodcast

 Extensive Sacrifices - Episode 6 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:22:55

We often focus on ourselves when it comes to resilience - how we can adjust this way, what can we do better, etc. But what about those that take upon the responsibility of a Patriot? How does it feel to come down with a wound, lose a body part, or break a bone? How do you stay flexible during the recovery process? In Episode 6, we'll be taking a look at the band "The Resilient", and how they formed as a result of their injuries, through the help of MusicCorps and director Greg Loman. We'll be exploring what it meant for these Army members to be able to perform and bond with each other in spite of their physical losses.  If you'd like to read about The Resilient, here are some articles that showcase their story:  https://dailycaller.com/2019/03/27/band-wounded-vets-the-resilient/ - "Check Out This Pennsylvania Band Of Wounded Vets Called ‘The Resilient’" https://buffalonews.com/news/local/for-wounded-springville-veteran-music-shines-a-light-in-his-darkest-hour/article_8b2d9a3f-d7ea-58bb-943d-2d6ad6595381.html - "For wounded Springville veteran, music shines a light in his darkest hour" https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-resilient-band-of-wounded-warriors-healing-through-music-2091-03-25/ - "'We just wear our scars on the outside': Band of wounded warriors healing through music" YouTube Video - "Introducing The Resilient" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cQnYnHDiww&t=15s Spaghetti Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thespaghettipodcast/

 Ups and Downs - Episode 4 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:19:08

We've emphasized the importance of being resilient, staying determined, and developing the skill of perseverance. That being said, lows occur in life, and it's hard to take in something so severe and unexpected. How do you cope and remain resilient when you have almost nothing going your way?  How Much Does Experience Matter? - Episode 3 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:15:59

It goes without saying that we are shaped by experience. All of what we have accomplished doesn't necessarily define us, but helps us build up our stepping stone. But how do we make the most of what we have experience in our life to build up resilience? Listen along as we take a deeper dive into the perspective of a licensed professional counselor(LPC), who needs to exhibit and promote the ideas of resilience on a consistent basis. I will also be demonstrating my profound admiration for pesto sauce. Check out ct.counseling.org to learn about the stories of LPC's.
