Episode 59 The smartphone camera is the window to your story. As your story unfolds on your screen you are watching your film as you record it. Acting in front of the iPhone camera was a lot like acting in theater on a stage. Blue Moon was shot in one location with a small crew. Mark Hadlow is the lead actor in the film, Horace Jones playing alongside Jed Brophy (Darren Cates) as co-lead. The 85-minute feature film is an incredible performance and a great story that begins in a gas station lit up like a spaceship in the dark night. Episode 59 of the SBP Podcast brings a deep conversation with actor Mark Hadlow. In this episode we speak about the making of Blue Moon and Mark shares some behind-the-scenes stories, including his real-life daughter Olivia Hadlow who plays Lucille Jones as Horace Jones’ daughter. Mark also shares a story about when he and Jed worked in The Hobbit, cast as Dwarf brothers Dori and Nori. One important part of the message from Mark is how you need to surround yourself with the right people and build a family that supports you. If you are thinking about making feature films with your smartphone you need to realize it’s not an easy task as a filmmaker. You need to take the focus of your story out of the technology and captivate your viewer closely by the performance. While the technology inspires anyone who has a smartphone to believe anyone can make a movie with a smartphone, it requires some skill in storytelling. But the story is king. And to deliver a good story, the performance has to stand out. Mark shares and emphasizes the work that actors need to put into their careers in order to deliver a good performance. “You can have the best camera and the best person that believes that they can actually film it because they’re really good at what they do. And they can see the magic of their camera angle and they can see what’s going on to film it. You could have the worst sound recording equipment but yet the person who’s doing the sound recording knows exactly—they’ve got the confidence to put it in the right place at the right time. You’ve still a good sound track, you’ve still got a good picture that you filmed.” Mark Hadlow. Mark Hadlow has been an actor for many years. His work is spread between Hollywood films and television to theatrical performances. It is no wonder after listening to the lead actor in Blue Moon why the film is doing so well. Not only does the film look and sound amazing, but the story absorbs its audience into a story through to the very end. That is the magic of making feature films with smartphones. You can make features with amazing landscape with cameras that cost almost as much as a house. You can carry your audience through mesmerizing footage in that sense and you can still deliver a good story. But with a smartphone camera, we are still limited by the size and capabilities of the lens. Take away all that footage and you may be left with a short film. Instead, focus on a great story and a great performance. Having confidence in your actors to develop their characters on screen and bring your audience inside the story to experience it as if they were there, in the middle of it…that is one of the virtues of smartphone filmmaking. “Mark Hadlow, ONZM, is one of New Zealand's best known actors. He has performed in countless theatre shows throughout New Zealand. Mark has made dozens of film appearances, several television series, commercials and radio voice-overs in the thousands. He has directed many plays throughout New Zealand, some independent productions and for the Court Theatre in Christchurch. We wanted to share an innovative project with our mobile filmmaking and smartphone video community. MINA 2019 has partnered with Goethe Institute in New Zealand. The (Hashtag) Nucleus competition for smartphone short films is a joint initiative of Goethe Institute and MINA (Mobile Innovation Network & Association). Join co-founder of MINA, Max Schleser on the SBP Podcast: The voice of mobile film™ to discuss the project and how you can be a part of it, in episode 58. Film-makers and creatives are invited to submit short films of 3 to 5 minutes in length, exploring issues of the environment and sustainability. The best entries will be selected, and in November 2019 the winners will be invited to a screening of the films and a three-day workshop in Wellington (New Zealand/Aotearoa). The workshop will bring together your diverse creative talents to shoot a smartphone short film on eco-tourism. Call for Entries: the environment and sustainability in smartphone films. Submission deadline is August 15. The project by Goethe Institute is a partnership with MINA which promotes a short film competition for smartphone films from Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Max discusses the possibilities and provides details of what types of films can be submitted to the competition. We also speak a bit about how MINA continues to provide global creative and innovative filmmakers and smartphone video creators an opportunity to push the limits of what can be done with smartphone and mobile devices to create stories and experimental works of art using mobile cameras. We encounter stories throughout our daily lives. We are living at a time where we carry a tool that can capture a story and share it with the world. CK Goldiing records his encounters and challenges with his smartphone and one of them is a film that is going viral. CK came to speak during the International Mobile Film Festival #MFF2019SanDiego and we featured his film, 61 Hugs which he shot with his Samsung smartphone. Episode 57 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking is a conversation with CK on his last day before he flew back to the UK with a high potential to inspire storytellers to use their phone cameras to share their stories. The conversation with CK began casually with his film, 61 Hugs. But it soon becomes passionate as we discuss the storytelling aspect of video and film. We speak about how a moment can turn into a great story and some of that has to do with what people are willing to share with you when they trust you. The other aspect of recording moments is distribution. We asked CK his preference and one thing he shares is how he doesn’t limit the potential of his videos by restricting them to a particular manner of distribution such as a series. However, he does have a series of videos in his YouTube channel with some videos becoming popular. 61 Hugs is going viral, not as a part of the series, but as a film. CK Goldiiing has his own marketing agency and he knows how to reach out to the press which he did for his film and his marketing skills are a great example of how you can help your film go viral. The main point he wanted to share was that his film was a human story. He also gives our listeners some insights on how to get traction for your film or story to get it press attention. CK discusses giving his film “as much oxygen as possible.” In order to do that, he had to not feel “icky” about sharing the film, and that is part of the challenge for content creators. Where you feel like perhaps you have already shared your film on Twitter enough but, no you haven’t. And there are always people who may see it today who did not see it yesterday. The experience of being a part of the film festival in San Diego meant a lot for CK, and he shares the essence of what drives us to organize it each year. IMFF 2019 was the 8th edition and we celebrated Stories! as the theme during the 10th anniversary since it was launched in 2009. CK thanks each of the sponsors for this year’s film festival. The aftereffects of the 2019 International Mobile Film Festival are euphoric. There was an energy and vibe throughout the two-day event which had an impact with everyone who was a part of the event in San Diego. We sat down for a discussion two days after the film festival with the president of Indiana Filmmakers Network, Nathan Bechtold before his flight back to Indiana. Listen to Episode 56 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking as we discuss the festival, the people, the vibe, the energy and the resources and opportunities IFN has for filmmakers in and outside Indiana. We began sharing the Indiana Filmmakers Network with Nathan but we were both still “hungover” from the aftereffects of the weekend’s IMFF 2019. The information Nathan shared about IFN benefits everyone and anyone who happens to be, or plans to be, making a film in the state of Indiana. IFN has several hubs throughout the state providing a physical resource filmmakers. It also has a strong online presence through its groups on social media. We share how IFN benefits someone who is looking to make a film with traditional equipment, since that is the base of their members. However, through a partnership with the #MobilizeStories Community Network by the International Mobile Film Festival, it is opening the door to filmmakers using smartphone cameras as well. In fact, IFN held a short contest for anyone in Indiana to make short films with their smartphones to feature in this year’s #MFF2019SanDiego and Nathan showcased them on Sunday as part of the program. Episode 56 discusses IFN’s resources for all filmmakers regardless of what camera you use to share your stories as films and then we dive into what it was like for Nathan to witness IMFF in person. Nathan’s biggest impression seemed to be the vibe and the support between all the filmmakers in the space where we held our film festival at Marina Village Conference Center. Nathan noted the welcoming atmosphere from the minute a filmmaker or attendee walked into the festival throughout the course of the program, the sessions and the entire event in general. People connected. People shared stories…and hugs. Although a podcast is an audio format, you can almost see the light in his eyes as he describes the experience. The way you approach a film as a director, screenwriter or actor, can be quite similar. It revolves and evolves around story, structure, and characters. Episode 55 of the SBP Podcast is a discussion with actor Jed Brophy. Jed has years of experience acting in many films you have probably heard of, Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong, District 9…just to name a few. Jed is one of the principal actors of Blue Moon shot in New Zealand. We spoke with Jed Brophy, who is in New Zealand – Aotearoa. He shares a bit of his career and experience as an actor in the feature film Blue Moon, shot entirely with the iPhone. Blue Moon was written and directed by Stef Harris. Jed is an actor who has worked in many films. He’s also had the privilege to work in a number of Hollywood films. The stories he shares about his experience in both, traditional film and mobile film will inspire anyone thinking, or wondering about whether to dive into the world of making films using smartphones. You don’t have to make a feature film, but you need to start doing it at any capacity to realize the potential of what you can achieve as a filmmaker and storyteller using a smartphone camera. Jed Brophy shares how the longest take in Blue Moon took about 11 minutes, due to the extensive dialogue in each scene. They broke the 85 minute feature screenplay into several parts for their performance during production. Blue Moon was filmed in a total of about 30 hours in a single location. Jed shared the differences between working on a film like Lord Of The Rings and Blue Moon from a personal perspective. The budget and cost for Blue Moon was about $12,000. Jed explains how one of the differences between large action films and a mobile film, has to do with the number of stops and takes for each scene during production. When you have a big crew, much equipment and action scenes, such as in Peter Jackson’s films that Jed has worked on, there are many things that can go wrong. For a shadow that does not belong in a shot, to many technical malfunctions. All the stops extend the time of production and you end up with a few minutes of usable footage in a typical day. Wherein a mobile film like Blue Moon, you end your day with about 30 minutes of usable footage. Jed shares specific differences in crew size and equipment, which can also lower the production time in a mobile film set’s production. Jed has played creatures in some films. He’s had to endure hours of makeup and prosthetics prep. He shares the experience of that experience. Jed also compares the difference and process he goes through playing creatures versus human characters. He shot a photo of a gas station with his iPhone and wrote a treatment. He sent them to an old friend, who was a professional actor. That is the beginning of the backstory to Blue Moon, a feature film shot with an iPhone 7 in New Zealand. The director, Stef Harris is our guest on the SBP Podcast episode 54. Stef Harris is the writer and director of the, roughly 85 minute film shot with his iPhone. The film’s principal actors are Jed Brophy and Mark Hadlow. The Director of Photography, Ryan O’Rourke, had to shoot the film with the iPhone and had to deal with long takes and a single location. The story behind the story of the characters is connected to the backstory of how the film evolved. Stef Harris is a police officer in New Zealand and took a picture of a lit up lone gas station using his smartphone. A picture of a thousand words is the saying. But literally, it turned into a screenplay filled with dialogue between two protagonists in a story: Horace Jones and Darren Cates. Understanding each other is part of our communication skills as we share our stories with others around us. Sometimes, a story needs to go further than the people around us. We can write or share it on social media and reach a lot of people around the world. Alexandra Guillossou went a step further. She brought her skills to create a film about a personal story very dear to her family. While on vacation, she just happened to have her smartphone with her, just like many of us do. She began to record her brother, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. Episode 53 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking shares the story behind how she was able to turn the footage into a delicate story using her smartphone. There are many steps to creating a film but usually, films are planned. Most filmmakers don’t carry a camera around wherever they happen to go. It can be bulky and maybe very inconvenient. Sitting out by a lake as your family is barbecuing…that just may not be a scenario you bring a professional camera to. But Alexandra had her phone with her and decided to record and document the scene without much planning. It wasn’t until she had captured the footage that she began to construct the story. The story has an impact for those who watch the entire film. It is a reality many of us do not understand what it’s like to have or live with the effects of someone close suffering with this disease. The power of stories can change lives. There are people who don’t understand what is happening during the course of an event but can watch a film like The Deepest Cut and realize the whole story in a way they couldn’t before. During our podcast conversation, Alexandra says, “It’s one thing to tell a story. It’s another thing to watch the story you just told.” The purpose of sharing her story is to bring awareness to debilitating diseases that many people do not understand. Sometimes, we need to understand these things happen to normal people and perhaps it can bring some light to the challenges. Alexandra points out how some people do not have a strong support system and their voices can get lost. We hope sharing her film, The Deepest Cut can help connect us as a society and as human beings. It would make the world a better place for each other if we could all respect and understand the challenges we all face each and every day. Star Wars Steampunk Universe is a charity support group based in Southern California which takes part in charities and events in southern California. They do crossover events with other charity groups. Two of the founding members of the Star Wars Steampunk Universe are our guests in Episode 52 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking. Founders of the group, who are still active participants, are Dude Vader (Chris), Captain Solo Seekerman (Nathan Seekerman), Hot Nerd Girl (Tracy), Kansas City Photography (Kansas Johnson), Lando Chronos / Family Goals Cosplay (James) and DLo Cosplay (Shaylor). They’ve added many more members to their group over the years. Chris emphasized they are not a cosplay group but a charity support group for Southern California and is specific to Star Wars. He mentions the Sci-Fi Coalition as one of the main groups they team up with and how they “do every version of cosplay you can think of.” Chris mentioned he is a part of about 100 events a year and 80 or so, of them, are charity. The group caught the eye of Lucas Film when they teamed up for a panel at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in 2015. They soon began to form the Star Wars Steampunk Universe and their debut as a group was at the San Diego Comic-Con International in 2016 where they received an award as the Best Costume Group from the Hollywood Costume Designer’s Guild. Chris plays Dude Vader which is a steampunk version of Darth Vader and Tracy “Hot Nerd Girl” plays Sabe Sprocket, a steampunk version of Queen Amidala's bodyguard. The group is able to get creative with their Star Wars character outfits thanks to encouragement from Lucas Film and Disney. We shared an insight story of how we connected with the group to include them in our film festival. Tracy has changed her outfit at least three times and Chris said that when it comes to Dude Vader, “There are over 300 versions right now.” We asked Tracy where the name “Hot Nerd Girl” came from. Tracy shares the story including her blog and social media following on Facebook of around 70 thousand. The story about this group is very interesting and their insights are intriguing. Chris and Tracy share many names from the history of their group and their current story. They were a part of the world premier of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in Hollywood and they shared an emotional moment during the film screening with their group with Nathan Seekerman who plays Captain Solo Seekerman. One thing we spoke about was how being behind a mask can help them deal with emotional situations during events as a charity. There is a similarity in documentary filmmaking behind the camera. Of course, we spoke about the importance of the red carpet for film festivals including what happens on our red carpet. At around 42 minutes into the podcast, Chris and Tracy speak about how and why cosplayers should make films using their smartphones. The general population in our planet undervalue stories just as the most powerful people in the world are aware of how to empower themselves through storytelling. Just like money, stories are a tool which can be used to cause harm or in wonderful ways. One of the best ways to share stories that have the biggest reach and effect is through film. All you need to do is press record! Okay, there is a bit more than that. Our guest in Episode 48 of the SBP Podcast takes us on a tour of the entire process from the idea for the film to the very end. John Woosley shot and edited Alex & The Firefly with a smartphone. The original film was 34 minutes long but he cut it down to almost half for a special screening at the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego, where John will also inspire other filmmakers and attendees with a Q&A presentation on mobile filmmaking. John’s film is a teen love story set in 2001, before smartphones. “First Love Changes Everything.” John shares many details of the process from the screenplay to the equipment he used, techniques to accomplish scenes which were challenging. The cool thing about our conversation with John is that he was willing to go into depth and share things with you in a way everyone with an interest in mobile film can understand and appreciate. Professionals and novices alike will appreciate John sharing real challenges during all phases of production from pre-production to post-production. But the tour of the process comes with solutions for each problem. He names the gear he used to accomplish the look and feel of the film during production and the software he used to shoot and edit. We touched on lenses, a stabilization rig, lightsn and audio which included syncing. He talks about how to create the smooth grain in your films. But that’s not all we discussed. Along with that he took us through the back door to share how he accomplished some things which are really tough to accomplish as a mobile filmmaker. There are books you read with stories you can visualize like a movie. I call it, “Booksualizing.” But there are books which are not told as a story. Those books can be quite interesting and there may be a story within them which you can visualize as a movie. Writing a screenplay is not the same as writing a book or a story. But our minds can take many concepts and visualize them in a way that they can then turn into a story. However, writing a story from a complex book into a screenplay and then making a movie requires some skill. And then, well, then there is taking that screenplay and shooting it using a smartphone camera. Our hero in this podcast is our guest, Steven Palmer Peterson aka Steve Peterson. He turned a very complex book into a story and then made a movie from it. The film is called, Consensus Reality and it is a feature length film which is one of the film that will be screening at the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego as part of the Mobile Feature Film competition this April. Episode 47 of the SBP Podcast: The Voice Of Mobile Film™ is a discussion that brings our listeners many details about the complexities of shooting a feature length film with a complex story in a short period of time. The film has a lot of dialogue and revolves around a character who has schizophrenia. It is based on a book written by an attorney who needed to prove to a judge that although he had this condition, he was not a danger to society or to himself. His book was like a journal with complex details that sometimes were out of this world. And so, Steve turned the book into a story and then a film which is, out of this world. The quality of his film is outstanding. The film was shot in New York City which gives the film rich visuals with it’s different location designs. The film’s key cast is comprised of Mason played by Garrett Richmond, Eris played by Christina Toth and The Yansha played by Gopal Divan. When you see the film in the festival, you will find that it has a unique aesthetic quality much like other cinematic films but you will also appreciate the quality of the story itself and its characters. Immediately, from the onset of the very first scene, you are captivated by the protagonist, Mason and his world. A world which his uniquely his but it is beautifully created by the director, Steve Peterson. Acting, directing, operating a smartphone camera and editing a film to share an incredible well structured story is how Ross Perkins accomplished making a full length feature mobile film. Episode 45 of the SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film™ takes us to Australia to discuss the experience of making a feature film with an iPhone and a talented cast. We spoke about sound recording and how to integrate a seamless dialogue during camera operation in a moving self-recording scene filled with action and movement. During some scenes some of the actors operate the cameras themselves and it gives the story multiple perspectives. However, the film has one protagonist which actually sneaks up on you in the sense that you discover which character’s perspective the story is being told from. There are many twists and turns in the film which keep the viewer engaged in this dark comedy and thriller. The film emphasizes the point that you need good actors, to portray good characters to make a great story blow you away in any film regardless of what camera you use, or even aesthetic production values. According to Ross, “The film is dialogue heavy.” which also lends to the point of why good actors are instrumental to the value of your film and story. There is a great ensemble of actors to appreciate in the film. We discuss how acting in theatre enriched his career and prepped him for acting in film and filmmaking. And we also talk about the intrusion of a camera in both acting and filmmaking versus the smartphone camera. There is a unique element to the film as it incorporates the current use of smartphones, including apps, GPS, social media and messaging into the story. The creative use of how Ross used the advantage of this brings an intriguing and captivating value to his film. The film is over 120 minutes long and following it as a viewer is incredibly natural and effortless. It brings the viewer to the edge of their seats, it brings laughter and a bit of lip-biting suspense and terror, too. This filmmaker made the best use of a smartphone as the camera but also included the phone into the story as one of the characters. Although there has not been an award given to a smartphone for exceptional acting, if there was, this film would definitely be considered. Mad House is about a home invasion and it is based on a real event that took place, which Ross explains why he felt a need to tone down a bit for his film. Our conversation brought us to discuss a bit about the original Blair Witch Project film and then we spoke a bit about self marketing for filmmakers.
