Experimenting with Smartphone Films with Melissa Brattoni Episode 29 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:09

A long time ago in a galaxy far away…actually—on earth, some filmmakers were experimenting with films which have been archived and preserved to ensure we can watch them 70 years later. Experimental films are not what you expect to see when you go to your local theater. They are not the typical Hollywood film. Then again, a lot of mobile films are also experimental in nature. Perhaps it’s because the camera is so accessible, it begs for our attention. When you have ideas for films and a camera in your hand at the same time, it’s easy to experiment with film concepts and ideas, much like our guest for episode 29 of the SBP Podcast, Melissa Brattoni. Download the podcast and listen offline anywhere. Melissa’s latest film was shot with her smartphone, an iPhone 6 and it was an official selection during the International Mobile Film Festival #MFF2018SanDiego. Her film, In My Mind was a short film she wrote, directed and acted in. Last year, a film she submitted was also selected, Meshes of An Autumn Afternoon. That film was also experimental and they both share a bit of an avant-garde look and feel. Last year’s film was shot with a different phone, a Google phone. Melissa shares a bit about how she came to make mobile films and the art of making films with phones as an artistic expression. It is a bit fascinating to find a filmmaker who just started making films developing her own consistent theme or genre. This podcast discussion will immerse you into the not-so-talked-about possibilities of smartphone filmmaking. Perhaps her films will be archived and preserved so people can watch them in the year 2088 or 3000. Or perhaps, when you listen to this conversation, you will want to experiment making films with your phone’s camera as well.  Smartphone Film Award Winner Insights with Brian Hennings Episode 28 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:04

If you are a writer and a storyteller then you may really enjoy listening to Brian Hennings. Brian comes to you as a storyteller and writer. Like most writers, sharing your stories is an important aspect of being a writer. Brian realized he could make films with his Samsung smartphone and submitted his first mobile film to the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego for #MFF2017SanDiego. His film, Express, was selected and we met Brian as a mobile filmmaker in San Diego. He enjoyed his experience and submitted a new film this year to #MFF2018SanDiego, and he flew out to San Diego again, to be a part of all that goes on in the festival. He reconnected with some and met some new filmmakers. But Brian won the First Place award for best film this year in the festival, so he took home a trophy. His film was also nominated to the Global Mobile Film Awards™ next year for Best Cinematography. The Awards Ceremony is the “Oscars” of mobile film. Now that Brian is back home in Perth, Australia, we wanted to catch up with him to discuss his mobile filmmaking experience as a storyteller. In Episode 28 of the SBP Podcast, we discuss his winning film, Focus and much ado about making films with smartphones. His insights are inspiring and he shares a perspective that comes from his unique experiences.  You Made A Movie With Your Smartphone, Now What with Chuck Copeland Episode 27 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:33

Chuck Copeland was a participant in #MFF2018SanDiego and enjoyed his first film festival experience with his short iPhone film The Workweek. He has experienced the film industry and even worked for a film festival but he never experienced a film festival as a filmmaker. During the red carpet walk, filmmakers who attended the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego were escorted by Star Wars Steampunk Universe. Chuck is a fan of cosplay and since he connects San Diego to Comic-Con, he thought having a cosplay group playing a part on the red carpet was very appropriate for our festival. And we think so too, especially since it’s truly an international film festival where filmmakers and others come from other countries and states. Episode 27 of the SBP Podcast is an interesting conversation with someone who is a fan of the film industry and film festivals. Chuck was able to have his first film festival experience using his phone camera. Chuck shares a lot of stories about his past and what his plans are for the future with mobile film. He may be in our next film festival whether he makes a film or not. While he was in San Diego attending our film festival he was submitting films to member film festivals of the Global Mobile Film Awards™ such as Cinephone in Barcelona and SF3 Smartphone Flick Fest in Sidney, and other film festivals. Chuck was also nice enough to allow us to record a bonus podcast for our patrons and you can find it on our Patreon page.  Roundtable San Diego International Mobile Film Festival Episode 26 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:40

The two-day event in San Diego, celebrated mobile filmmaking around the world. Several filmmakers came out to be a part of it in person and we are extremely grateful to them for doing so. Not all filmmakers are able to make the trip and attend so this year, since we host the SBP Podcast to give a voice to the mobile film community, we decided to host this Roundtable discussion about the festival for our listeners around the world, and those who could not come. In this roundtable were several of the filmmakers, sponsors and our brand ambassador Aaron Nabus. Brian Hennings and Narelle Nash from Australia, who accepted awards during the red carpet Awards Ceremony participated with Chuck Cropland from Toronto, Prakash Gandhi Natarajan, and Seth Dacio from San Diego were some of the star filmmakers from the film festival who were able to stay for the roundtable podcast. Also with us were Neal and Jana Hallford from Swords and Sorcery Studios and J.R. Thrasher from San Diego Real Estate Veterans who all sponsored our film festival. The podcast began with an introduction around the table and then everyone spoke about their experience at the film festival from their perspective. These filmmakers were a lot of fun to talk to and had a great sense of humor. It was great hearing from Seth Dacio, one of the youngest filmmakers, still in his teens, about how much he enjoyed the red carpet experience with the Star Wars Steampunk Universe cosplay group escorts. Soon after that we held the “Battle of the Phones” session which was lots of fun between Brian and Narelle. We also get to hear the perspective of some of our local sponsors. The podcast was a nice addition to the festival for everyone who could not make it. It is probably the next best thing to sitting down with some of the people who took part in the festival. Hope you enjoy the discussion and subscribe to listen to more coming weekly. If this is the first time you have listened to our podcast, feel free to cruise through the previous episodes of our podcast where we have discussions with our guests about mobile film. You can listen on iTunes and GooglePlay, Stitcher and other platforms and you can download the episode to listen offline anywhere, including your car, while you drive. We want to thank all the filmmakers who were a part of our film festival and whose films were screened. You can get more details about the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego on the website.  Celebrate Making Movies with Smartphones In San Diego Episode 25 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:31

The seventh edition of the annual International Mobile Film Festival takes place April 28 & 29 in San Diego. This year, we celebrate making movies with smartphones all over the world with a number of filmmakers who attend the festival. Films shot with only mobile phones will screen during the festival and the filmmakers look forward to sharing the stories with attendees and fellow filmmakers. Some filmmakers are local from San Diego and others come from other countries. Some of the filmmakers are as young as 12 years old and others…well, they are older. Some are experienced in the video and film industry and others are novices who only dreamed of being a filmmaker before last year. This year’s festival not only brings mobile filmmakers to the event, a red carpet awards ceremony, Q&A Sessions, mobile filmmaking workshop presentation and networking. This year brings a feature length film shot with an iPhone during a special screening with a lecture by filmmaker and protagonist, Brian McLane from New York, and a Q&A session with Hollywood actor Tim Russ, best known for his role as Tuvok in the Star Trek Voyager television series. Tim Russ played a role in Brian’s feature film. But wait, there’s more! #MFF2018SanDiego will host the USA premier of the Filmbreaker movement keynote presentation with Jason van Genderen from Sydney, Australia. The event will inspire the storyteller in people of all ages with or without film and video experience. Wether you made a Hollywood blockbuster film or your experience stops with your latest kitty cat video on Instagram, this film festival is for anyone who has a mobile phone or simply has access to one. The event is for all ages and for all human beings on the planet. Sunday is the day we host the red carpet awards ceremony. Last year, the filmmakers enjoyed their red carpet experience with a local cosplay group: Star Wars Steampunk Universe. They are coming back this year. The International Mobile Film Festival is inviting all cosplayers to not only attend our film festivals but to participate with the new Cosplay mobile film category where they can join filmmakers from all over the world sharing their stories through film using their smartphone cameras. If you happen to be a cosplayer, join us to find out more about this unique filmmaking category designed for you! Episode 25 of the SBP Podcast is a two-part episode. We begin with Tracy, Hot Nerd Girl, who leads the Star Wars Steampunk Universe group and Aaron Nabus, co-host of the HallHShow podcast and SBP Brand Ambassador. We recorded our podcast during the Steampunk Gaslight Gathering in San Diego in which Tracy’s group presented a panel. The second part of our podcast is a compilation of clips from our podcast conversations which we had with guests who are participating in #MFF2018SanDiego as official filmmakers and VIP speakers such as Brian McLane and Jason van Genderen. The filmmakers chosen are attending the festival in San Diego and if you are coming, you can meet them in person.  Smartphone Video For A Cause with Dimple Devadas Episode 24 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:49

Our guest for Episode 24 of the SBP Podcast is Dimple Devadas in London. Her film, Silence in London will screen during the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego #MFF2018. Shot with an iPhone, the film shares an interesting message in a natural setting with a poetic song. Cassius Rayner made the movie with her. She and Cassius met in a mobile filmmaking class he taught in London and they decided to work on the film together. You can hear from him on Episode 20 of the SBP Podcast. Dimple is a psychologist by profession but she is also making films using smartphones. She says to “watch this space,” meaning her space, as she is already working on new projects. This podcast is a conversation about how some of the stories behind a film can help you understand the message behind a film and appreciate how it came together. This is true with many films and this one has a a cause behind it with a story being told in the moment and an opportunity for you to join the cause with your own version in your community.  Upcoming International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego Episode 22 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:16

Our brand ambassador, Aaron Nabus and myself discuss the upcoming International Mobile Film Festival taking place April 28 and 29 in San Diego. The festival is exclusively focused on all things mobile film. The theme this year is a celebration of making movies and videos with smartphones globally. We share the logistics of the festival, the location, the dates, the times and what attendees can expect. We asked Aaron Nabus, our brand ambassador, to share the names of the filmmakers in this year’s film festival #MFF2018SanDiego. We spoke a bit about why we are celebrating mobile film as a theme this year and then we talked a bit about some filmmakers who are coming back this year. Aaron shared some information about our VIP Special Guest Speaker, Tim Russ also known for his role as Tuvok in the Star Trek Voyager television series. The entire podcast is an open conversation about our film festival and the community Aaron has come to know since he met me during our mobile filmmaking panel during Comic-Con in San Diego 2016. We also talk about the current state of mobile filmmaking regarding the fact that Hollywood is now publicly showing interest in making films with iPhones. Aaron and I discuss the new official Cosplay Category for our film festival which we are looking forward to presenting during our film festival next year. Aaron is captivated by the Chicken Story from our film festival’s beginnings…so we talk a bit about that and you’ll have to listen to the podcast to know what our film festival has to do with chickens. This episode was recorded on March 17th, Saint Patrick’s Day. It’s a bit relaxed and casual but that is why you may enjoy the natural flow of the conversation discussing our favorite and most important event of the year. There are some tips about making films and videos with smartphones mixed in this podcast.  What Is The Filmbreaker Movement with Jason van Genderen Episode 21 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:24:47

Ten years. Perhaps you just found out recently that people are making movies with mobile phones. It may come as a shock that it’s been going on for over ten years. But we recently met someone who has been making films using cell phones and more recently with smartphones since 2008. Meet Jason van Genderen in Australia. A pioneer filmmaker in the mobile filmmaking industry. About two days after Jason launched his project: Filmbreaker, we recorded this podcast episode 21. Now, we are in San Diego which is history to Australia since they are a day into the future from us. But in about one day, after launching a Facebook page and the project, Jason had surpassed his goal. He planned to spend the rest of 2018 traveling and speaking at events geared toward mobile filmmakers to reach ten thousand followers to the project. But he passed that goal in one day. So when we were scheduled to record our podcast a couple days in, Jason was thrilled with enthusiasm…sort of elated with the results. In this podcast, we asked Jason to tell us about where he came from and what drove him to make films with phones when hardly anyone else was doing it beyond experimenting. Jason shared that the technicalities of video production with professional cameras he used for videos before cell phones were actually keeping him from focusing on the story part of his videos. Once he began to use his phone with all the simplicities, he was able to focus more on the storytelling aspect of making films and videos. He won an award at TropFest and he just, well, he didn’t say it but we know what happened. He got bitten by the mobile filmmaking bug and became passionate about making films with phones. You’ll want to listen to the podcast to understand a bit of the history of how we arrived here, ten years later. The conversation finds us comparing notes about the beginning of the mobile film industry from each of our perspectives. There is a story within this podcast which takes a little imagination to realize. But the best part is where we go from here. And that is where you, the listener, can take the story. Now it’s your turn to be a part of a great movement, a great community, and a great story. The story of mobile film began over ten years ago. Today is the beginning of the future of that story and it includes you and everyone with a phone camera. If you accept the dare to make films and share your stories using your smartphone camera. You will want to tune in to our exclusive bonus podcast on our Patreon page for our patrons. Jason shares all you need to know about settings on your phone and apps. You will learn how to go into your settings to make sure you get the most of your video recordings for your films and then Jason brings up settings on apps used for filmmaking.  Smartphone Video for Professionals with Cassius Rayner Episode 20 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:13

It’s one thing to make films as an art of self-expression and then there is the art of making films as a profession for clients.  Mobile Filmmaking and Storytelling With Students In Nigeria with Shola Ajayi Episode 19 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:10:10

Shola Ajayi is from New York and she worked with youth organizations in New York teaching people how to tell stories. That work inspired Shola to be the person she is today and her work with the UR4Africa organization. Shola’s father worked in Lagos in Nigeria and growing up she would visit him there during summer vacations. After college she moved back there for a year and she struggled at first because there were many things about living there she was not used to. One day, she made a decision to go to film school and tell stories about Nigeria. She then went back to Nigeria to make a film for her thesis project. That’s when things began to really inspire her because the entire community offered its support to her in order to make her film. There were many challenges to make her film including intermittent power supply and other issues. But she was able to overcome them thanks to the community’s support. But also, young people were really curious as to how she was making her film. That experience was what inspired UR4Africa. Her thesis project turned into something bigger. Shola traveled back and forth from New York to Nigeria and soon decided to work in Nigeria full-time. Her story and her experience is definitely worth listening to her explain the work of the organization, their mission and goals and how and why they decided to get involved in mobile filmmaking. The program launched last year, in 2017. Shola talks about creativity with storytelling with film because with limited resources troubleshooting and creativity are a must. This episode is very informative about storytelling in a community and how some communities with the least resources can make mobile filmmaking work for them to share their stories with the entire world. You can reach Shola in the UR4Africa organization at team@ur4africa.com. Be sure to mention SBP Podcast or something referring to our podcast in the subject line so she doesn’t miss your email.  Father and Daughter Mobile Smartphone Filmmakers with Anthony De La Cruz and Miranda Mullings Episode 17 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:10:56

Meet a father and daughter who are making films using their smartphones. Miranda Mullings was 11-years-old last year, and her father, Anthony De La Cruz is an actor. In 2016, he made a film that he submitted into the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego. So when he decided to make a new film for our film festival last year, his daughter decided that she wanted to make a film using her smartphone as well. Miranda was inspired by the experience her father had in the festival in 2016. However, she was also invited during the Q&A Panel, by the founder of the festival, to make a movie with a mobile phone and submit it to the festival for 2017. Miranda was shy and quiet and even her teachers were pointing it out to her parents. But we invited Miranda to come with her father and another filmmaker to promote the festival event in the San Diego KUSI news channel to be interviewed. Miranda took part in the festival’s Q&A Panel with her father and answered questions from the moderator and attendees. Making a movie with her smartphone and being exposed to public speaking helped Miranda grow into a more confident person. Now, as a 12-year-old filmmaker, she made a new film for this year’s #MFF2018SanDiego. She looks forward to being in the film festival again and her filmmaking skills are evolving quite fast. She already has a story in mind for her next film. Listen to Miranda and her father talk about making films using smartphones and you will be inspired no matter what your age is. Their story is one for all families and mobile filmmaking may bring you closer to your parents or your children through storytelling. You can meet Miranda and Anthony during our film festival this year on April 28 & 29 in San Diego. Also, listen to the bonus episode with them on our Patreon page where they share tips to help parents and kids make films and support each other as filmmakers.  Sharing A Message With A Story In Your Mobile Film with Brian Hennings Episode 16 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:11

Episode 16 of the SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film When it comes to making movies and sharing stories through film using a smartphone camera there is a focus in the quality of the footage because it’s still hard for people to perceive that you can make great films using the camera on a phone. Truth be told, you can share a compelling story through film with any camera. Using the camera on your smartphone, however, can open doors to storytellers. Whether you are an experienced filmmaker, an elderly person, a 11 year old child or someone without any budget whatsoever anywhere in the world, you now have the power to share your story through film. But what most stories do is not simply connect us but to provoke empathy and most importantly, send a message from your pocket to everyone around the world. Brian Hennings is a storyteller by every means. He is primarily a writer and he has decided to share some of his stories through film using his Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Brian participated and attended the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego in April 2017 with his film, Express. His newest film, Focus, was accepted this year as well and he will be attending the festival again next April. Aside from the quality of the footage he achieved with his smartphone, we discuss the story and the messages behind his films. All stories send a message, even if the filmmaker was not intending to. We discuss why it’s a good idea to pay attention to the message you send with your story during the filmmaking process. Without giving away too much about his film, Brian discusses the message in his story and how the smartphone was the perfect camera to use to convey the message in his film. If you are able to attend the official International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego, you can watch his newest film Focus and meet Brian Hennings and listen to him and ask questions during the Q&A Panel.  The Actor's Perspective in Mobile Filmmaking with Raphael Corkhill Episode 15 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:08

Episode 15 of the SBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film. A conversation with Raphael Corkhill, a leading actor in Conrad Mess' film Time To Pay Off Debts shot in New York. Screened in the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego in April 2016 as the first screening in the U.S. Raphael is living in New York but is from Wales and lived in London. He has also lived in L.A. and is an accomplished actor. His first work in the mobile film industry was as one of the leads in Time To Pay Off Debts, directed by famed iPhone filmmaker Conrad Mess in 2015 which we screened in the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego. Our screening was the first in the U.S. Raphael was one of the burglars in the film, which is a Mobster film set after WWII. The film was shot in New York. Our discussion begins with the experience on working in the film directed by Conrad Mess who is the world’s most awarded iPhone filmmaker. However, the discussion quickly gets passionate as we discuss our views and perspectives on storytelling through the film medium and how he views it as an actor in the entertainment industry. There is no clear defining line between our perspectives, which makes the conversation a bit more interesting and entertaining. The importance of a good film is the story. Raphael spoke about the importance of sticking to a story during filmmaking. He says the effects, the musical score, and such are important but if you don’t have a story to captivate your audience and keep them engaged then they won’t watch the film. Talked about the current state of tech and where it’s heading. But the concept of storytelling is still the same as it was in the beginning of humankind. However, the methods of storytelling are advancing and evolving as we speak and it’s happening fast. We also discussed acting and how the audience’s perspective affects the absorption of the message of a story according to a performance. Raphael explained his experience in being directed via Skype during Time To Pay Off Debts when they ran out of time and Conrad Mess had to leave the location of the production before it was complete. Time To Pay Off Debts was Raphael’s only experience working in a mobile film. We interviewed Raphael a few years back on our blog MobileMedia.press and we share a link to that below: The Challenge Of Smartphone Filmmaking. It is an in-depth interview with Conrad Mess about the film and Raphael Corkhill about his experience. We also include a link to watch the film: Time To Pay Off Debts where you can watch Raphael in action. We need to warn you, the film is not kid friendly. Our Patreon page has a bonus podcast interview with Raphael which is highly informative about acting for another medium which most people don’t even realize requires acting skills, and you’ll have to go there to find out what it is. You will not be disappointed!
