 JOHN OTTERSON | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:41

John Otterson is a widely experienced man when it comes to investment, and this stems from his childhood up to his long-haul involvement with Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) Capital. Otterson has more than 19 years of venture capital experience making him a valuable asset to the company where he is responsible for private equity fund investments and Limited Partner relations. John Otterson grew up in a business-inclined household where he was able to absorb the entrepreneurial cycle of birth, growth and sometimes failure of a company. Otterson became involved in a couple of start-up companies himself but started his corporate career when he came across SVB as a business school student. He has been working for the organization for 17 years and currently is with SVB Capital, the private equity arm of the bank. During his many years with the company, he has seen great and difficult times and cycles where different sectors come in favor, like the internet boom of the late 90s. Otterson’s experience leads him to be “cautiously optimistic” about the business environment in the State and around the nation especially for technology companies. Greater Good Radio brings John Otterson, managing director of SVB Capital, and his extensive knowledge and familiarity of the investment industry and venture capital sector. In this interview, John talks about how his family act as a significant entity that has put him to where he sits in his career, family and community involvement. John speaks of passion as his driving force to success. “Do something that you’re passionate about,” he said. “Think about what drives you so you can tap your passion, that’s a tremendous source of energy.” For budding entrepreneurs, don’t miss out on the after show where John Otterson points out what it really takes for a sound investment to venture capitalists. Learn more about John’s relentless pursuit of balance between his career, family and philanthropy only here on Greater Good Radio. Listen now.  Dr. RYAN FERCHOFF | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:26

Dr. Ryan Ferchoff’s secret to success is simple—be economical. It is his providential nature and dream of growth that have given him business success. Dr. Ferchoff’s Natural Wellness Center at Manoa market has become profitable within a month after opening its doors. “It’s about keeping your expenses low. Don’t go buying all these expensive equipment and supplies. Just stick to the basics of what you’re good at. As your business grows, then you can start the other things.” As a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Ferchoff underwent the same training in medical school and learned basic sciences. But on top of it, he also learned the “other natural therapies like vitamins, minerals, different therapies to stimulate the body to heal itself instead of taking a drug or medication to kind of just cover up the symptoms.” Greater Good Radio brings Dr. Ryan Ferchoff on-air and online as he talks about his reasons to becoming a naturopathic physician and what brought him to Hawaii and start his own business. He also speaks on how he manages to run the wellness center as an entrepreneur dealing with costumers and as a doctor dealing with patients. In this interview, he also gives advice to entrepreneurs and professionals about how they can maintain a healthy lifestyle despite their hectic schedules at work. Find out more about naturopathic medicine and how it acts as an alternative to orthodox medicinal practices. Listen now. This is a must for professionals, or any person for this matter, who want to find a healthy balance between their careers and lifestyles. BIO: Dr. Ryan Ferchoff received his education from a four year professional naturopathic medical college, where they are trained as primary care family physicians. Naturopathic Physicians evaluate diet and nutrition, and place emphasis on restoring health and developing wellness programs to help keep the patient disease-free. Naturopaths are the only physicians clinically trained in a wide variety of medical systems from which they are able to combine and tailor these treatments to the individual needs of patients. Mleynek and the SBDC help write business plans, get financing, do business research and the like for Hawaii entrepreneurs. In this interview, he talks about his and the Hawaii SBDC Network’s role in uplifting the small business environment in the State. “I think small business people are working in situations where they work in front of their knowledge in the sense that they have to stretch,” Mleynek says. “They’re making decisions when they don’t have sufficient information and it’s the nature of being in business because you don’t have the time and ways to get all the information, yet you’re in the position to make the decision and you’re going to live with the consequences of those decisions.” “On one side it’s very exciting, it’s always a learning experience, and it can be difficult,” he added. Listen now as Mleynek explains how the SBDC can get your business off the ground. BIO: Darryl Mleynek Biographical Statement Since 1994, Darryl Mleynek has been the State Director of the Hawai`i Small Business Development Center Network, which is a program of the University of Hawai`i at Hilo that is partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The achievements of the Hawai`i SBDC Network were recognized in 1998 when it was presented with the Hawai`i State Award of Excellence. In 1999, it received a national Outstanding Economic Development Project Award from the National Association of Management and Technical Assistance Centers for a $23.7 million grant program it administered. The Hawai`i SBDC Network was accredited in 1998 and again in 2002.  RIVER KIM, TIERNEY MORIKAWA, and JACKIE CHANG | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:58

Punahou high school student River Kim, believing that he already has everything he desires, never asked for a present from his parents back in Christmas of 2003. Instead, he wanted them to give money to charity. But rather than writing a check, he came up with a much bigger idea of raising funds for charity—which became the birth of Malama Jam. With the help of his father, Greg Kim, and a small group of classmates, River put together the charity event effectively raising $57000 gross for local charities, including IHS and Children’s Alliance, since its inception in 2004. On May 21st, River Kim’s brainchild will once again shine this time to benefit HUGS or Help Understanding and Group Support. Greater Good Radio interviews Malama Jam founders, River Kim and Tierney Morikawa; and the organization’s PR Chair, Jackie Chang, as they give their thoughts and insights on community involvement and Punahou School’s role in providing their students a mindset geared towards public service. “At Punahou, we are encouraged to reach out to the people in need,” Tierney Morikawa says, “Our school president always says, “To whom much is given, much is expected” and he has always instilled that in us.” Meanwhile, Jackie Chang adds, “Our big message is not only for us to be successful in making a difference but to get the word out that kids can make a difference and to encourage other people to do an event of their own.” This interview will definitely inspire parents and children to be more actively involved in giving back. Listen now and hear more about how a group of high school students are able to make a significant contribution to the community by empowering the youth through positive leadership. BIO: River Kim is a Junior and an honor student at Punahou School. River is the founder of Malama Jam, an annual benefit concert organized, conducted and performed by youth to help worthy causes. River and the youth team of Malama Jam have raised over $50,000 in their first two concerts, benefiting the homeless and sexually abused children in their first two years. The 2006 concert will benefit HUGS, a nonprofit that helps seriously ill children and their families. River is a bass player in the Punahou Symphony Orchestra, and plays electric bass for an island music band called Auana. River also plays slack key guitar and piano, and enjoys music of all genres. He is active in sports, as an All-League and All-State football player on Punahou’s varsity football team, playing both receiver and kicker. He also plays varsity basketball for Punahou. Tierney Morikawa is a Junior at Punahou School. She has been a part of the Malama Jam team since the beginning, and she has worked in various areas of the event’s planning, including media coverage, talent, auction, and communications. Tierney enjoys doing community service, and she receives satisfaction from knowing that Malama Jam helps prove that kids can make a difference in the world. Tierney also has a deep passion for the Hawaiian culture and hula. She has been dancing since she was two years old, and she has been with her kumu hula, Mapuana de Silva and Halau Mohala ‘Ilima for twelve years. She has participated in three Merrie Monarchs, and she is preparing to ‘uniki (graduate) as an ‘olapa (dancer) this summer. In addition to her involvement in Malama Jam and hula, Tierney plays the viola and participates in Ka Wai Ola—a club at school that publishes a bi-annual magazine of student poetry, prose, and artwork. She enjoys reading various styles of poetry and prose, because she finds that it inspires her own writing. Links: Malama Jam Listen on Youtube:

Being one myself I find the quality of the programming to be more engaging than anything like it out there. I have gotten a lot of useful information on how helping my community in the long run will help your business. Hearing it from the people that make the decisions has definitely given me a better perspective on how to go about these decisions. Also having the chance to meet these individuals has given me great confidence in the over all future in entrepreneurial ventures.” Listen now to find out how Greater Good Radio inspires college students through social entrepreneurship.  JEFFREY WATANABE | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:00

Jeff Watanabe can be perceived to be the most powerful man in Hawaii—if you consider his position as chairman of the board of Hawaiian Electric Industries, which supplies 93 per cent of the State’s energy to electric utility companies. And his position in the company is just one of his many roles as member of the board of 16 for-profit and four non-profit organizations. Jeff Watanabe also plays a role as an entrepreneur. He and his colleagues put together their own law firm in 1971–this, straight out of law school. At this time, Watanabe Ing. and Komeiji Llc was the youngest of its kind which went head-to-head with the five biggest law firms in the state. Watanabe’s first experience with the non-profit sector came at the age of 27–and like anything else that offers pleasure, he became hooked on community involvement and the fact that he is making a difference outside the entrepreneurial realm. Watanabe talks about the phenomenal ‘generational change’ where people are more apt to try different things, taking risks and grabbing opportunities along the way. The tumultuous events of the 60s, the changing economic landscape of Hawaii and the influence of J.F. Kennedy to the young people have basically galvanized Watanabe et al to start their own law firm rather than join existing law firms at the time. He claims that another generation change is taking place where young people are becoming more active in community involvement and social entrepreneurship. His numerous membership in different organizational boards stems from his involvement in the non-profit sector. In this interview, he says that one qualification for sitting on a for-profit board is involvement in non-profit organizations particularly in Hawaii. BIO: Jeffrey Watanabe Partner and principal Jeffrey N. Watanabe has been with the law firm since 1971. His practice concentrates mainly in hotel and resort development, communications, and general corporate law. Mr. Watanabe received his Bachelor of Arts in 1965 from the University of California at Berkeley. His Juris Doctor was granted in 1968 from George Washington University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the firm, he was Deputy Attorney General for the State of Hawaii, assigned to the Antitrust Division, 1968-69, and the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, 1969-70. He also served as the State’s Chief Counsel in matters before federal agencies. Mr. Watanabe is widely active in business as well as community affairs. He is a director of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., American Savings Bank, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Ltd., Grace Pacific Corporation, Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc., Loea Communications Corporation, Matson Navigation Company, Inc., MidWeek Printing/Oahu Publications, Inc., and Oceanic Time Warner Cable.  MIKE McCARTNEY | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:50

Mike McCartney is a real all-rounder. He has served in the Hawaii State Senate for 10 years and co-produced Hawaii’s number one local TV show “Hawaii Stars”. McCartney worked as a negotiation specialist for Hawaii State Teacher’s Association for his foremost job. And he has been the incumbent president and CEO of PBS Hawaii since 2000. But despite all success, he was just an average kid—and his adolescent disposition should serve as an example to high school and college students who are finding it hard to put direction in to their future. McCartney himself was a C-student back in high school and his GPA made it doubly hard for him to find a suitable university. But his perseverance and dedication eventually paved the way for him to see clearly what he really wanted to do with his life. Greater Good Radio talks to Mike McCartney about his career and how he made it as big boss of PBS Hawaii. McCartney also shares a line from his dad’s poem which he personally lives by, “The cosmic dust that you borrowed from the universe, give it back in brighter coin than you received.” With this mantra in mind, it seems that everything that McCartney does is veered towards being of service after having received loads from the community. His advice to the public especially students, “Come up with something that you enjoy doing that you think can help the community.” BIO: Mike McCartney Prior to joining PBS Hawaii as its president and chief executive officer in November 2000, Mike McCartney served as a state senator in the Hawaii State Legislature (1988 to 1998). He held several key leadership roles in the Senate’s majority. He also served as a cabinet member under Governor Benjamin Cayetano (1999 and 2000) as the director of the state Department of Human Resources Development. He worked as an independent producer on several local productions for television but was instrumental in creating and producing “Hawaii Stars,” a local television program that, in many ways, was the forerunner to the current national program “American Idol.” Over as many years, McCartney continued to serve the community by serving on various community boards including: past chairman of the Hawaii Tourism Authority; current board member for the Hawaii Justice Foundation; board member for the Royal State Trust; board member for the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution; and former board member of Pacific Resources in Education and Learning. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Freshman Legislator of the Year (1989) from the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly, Client Advocate Award from the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii (1991) and Lawmaker of the Year from Small Business Hawaii (1993).
