The NCAA Independent Resolution Panel has finally announced their ruling for the LSU men's basketball and football programs after an investigation into the athletic department revealed several NCAA violations including recruiting violations, allocation of impermissible funds, and lack of institutional control including violations from former men's basketball coach Will Wade and former football coach Ed Orgeron. The ruling seems to be fairly favorable toward LSU: three year backdated probation that ends in September 2023, one fewer basketball scholarship in each the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and vacated football wins between the 2012-2015 seasons. The punishment from the NCAA was lessened by a self-imposed bowl ban, firing Will Wade, and the vacated wins. Overall, it does not seem to impact either the men's basketball program or football program too heavily into the future. Plus, LSU baseball has made it to the final game on their side of the bracket thanks to a gutsy and clutch performance from pitcher Nate Ackenhausen to send the Tennessee Vols packing and a huge three-run bomb from Cade Beloso against Wake Forest to force a second game against the Demon Deacons. The LSU Tigers started off their trip to Omaha with a win over the Tennessee Volunteers but the luck ran out in Game 2 as the Tigers fall to the number one overall seed Wake Forest Demon Deacons 3-2 Monday night. Ty Floyd was on the mound for LSU against Wake Forest and had a dominant first five innings striking out ten and giving up zero runs. Hits from Tommy White and Tre Morgan in the third inning gave LSU the lead, but Floyd couldn't hold on through the sixth inning when he walked three straight batters and gave up two runs in the sixth tying the game with two runs a piece. A third Wake Forest run in the eighth would be it and the Tigers head to the losers bracket while Wake Forest awaits their opponent for the final game, or games, before the College World Series final. LSU football special teams coordinator Brian Polian is transitioning into an "off the field role", announced by LSU football on Tuesday afternoon. Polian was the only coach from Brian Kelly's staff from Notre Dame that was retained in his move to LSU, however LSU's special teams ranked at the bottom of college football in most statistical categories. LSU ranked 116th in the nation in kickoff return defense, allowing an average of 23 yards per kickoff. They ranked 108th in college football in punt return defense allowing 11 yards per punt return. Beyond the statistics, LSU special teams hurt the football team on several occasions. Against Florida State, LSU muffed two punts and had a field goal and extra point blocked. LSU handed the Tennessee Volunteers a touchdown in the very first seconds of the game after a muffed kickoff return. It seemed like just about anything that could have gone wrong for the Tigers special teams unit this season, did go wrong. Polian is transitioning into an NFL general manager-esque role moving forward. He will focus his efforts full time on recruiting, NIL management, and scouting. But LSU won't be alone in such changes; as college football begins to resemble the NFL with NIL acting as contracts and the transfer portal acting as free agency, college staffs will accommodate the added challenges with designated general managers. Plus, LSU's 2022 leading receiver Malik Nabers was arrested in New Orleans Monday evening for the illegal possession of a weapon. He was arrested Monday evening and booked early Tuesday morning. LSU baseball is getting all of the love this preseason, for good reason: unanimous number one team in the country, number one recruiting class in the country, number one transfer portal class in the country, number one MLB prospect in the country. LSU is the favorite to win a national title this year, and while it is incredibly difficult to win in college baseball the scene is set too perfectly for LSU to not win the College World Series. The Tigers are a top team in the country yet hasn't won a title in fourteen years which is, by LSU standards, too long. They've gotten in the big dance, like their 2017 matchup against the Florida Gators in the CWS Final, but couldn't pull it out to hoist the trophy at the end of it. There is too much talent on this team to not hoist the trophy at the end of it this year. But what are some factors that could hold the Tigers back this season? Unfortunately the injury bug has already bitten the LSU Tigers as RHP Grant Taylor is out for the season with a torn UCL. Injuries can hold any team back, no matter how much or how little talent you have. Barring injuries, the only thing that can hold LSU back is themselves. Their two biggest problem areas last season were pitching depth and defense. Head coach Jay Johnson made it a priority this offseason to patch up those holes bringing in pitchers Paul Skenes, Thatcher Hurd, Christian Little, and others via the transfer portal. The schedule is incredibly tough taking on three top ten teams in Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee in the first three weeks of conference play. It's almost time for opening weekend at The Box! LSU baseball is the unanimous #1 ranked team in the country and this may be the most highly anticipated LSU baseball season in a long time, which is saying something considering how highly anticipated each season is and has been in recent history. LSU baseball head coach Jay Johnson answered the question LSU fans have been pondering for weeks: who will be in the starting pitching rotation for opening weekend? Paul Skenes will take the mound on Friday night, which comes to no surprise to anyone familiar with Skenes and his talent. He was a first team All-American in his two seasons at the Air Force Academy before transferring to LSU for the 2023 season. He is projected to be a top five pick in the 2023 MLB Draft and Johnson calls Skenes "one of the best, if not the best" pitchers in the country. Saturday night is reserved for the lefties as Riley Cooper gets the starting nod on day two. Cooper transferred from the University of Arizona last season and saw more work than any other pitcher in LSU's bullpen with 30 appearances. Finally, the shocker comes on Sunday as true freshman Chase Shores will take the mound. Shores was the top RHP in his home state of Texas last year and is a top five RHP prospect in the country. LSU football announced that spring practice will begin just under a month away on March 9th leading up to the spring game on April 22 in Tiger Stadium. ESPN college football writer Bill Connelly released last week a college football ranking based off of the percentage of production from 2022 returning this upcoming season. However, that ranking lacked context of incoming recruiting classes, transfer portal talent, and success from the last few seasons. In the former ranking, LSU football ranked 32nd in the country. But in Connelly's most recent ranking which does consider recruiting classes and recent success, LSU ranks 7th in the country. College football is on the verge of undergoing massive changes in 2024: the College Football Playoff is expanding to twelve teams, the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins will jump from the PAC-12 to the Big 10, and the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will part ways with the Big 12 and join the SEC in 2024, one year ahead of schedule. But the changes to the Southeastern Conference don't stop at just adding two more members; the SEC will likely do away with divisions and make changes to the annual schedules. So what does that mean for LSU? What options is the SEC contemplating and which scenario is best for LSU? Plus, the LSU women's basketball team played in one of the biggest games of the season as the #3 ranked Tigers headed to Columbia, SC to take on the #1 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in an undefeated vs. undefeated matchup. Kim Mulkey's squad was handed it's first loss of the season and it was a bad one. The Gamecocks won 88-64 and although LSU is still one of the top five teams in the country with an incredibly impressive resume, that game revealed just how big the gap is between South Carolina and everyone else. The men also lost their conference matchup over the weekend but unfortunately they are a little bit more accustomed to that result than the women are. A stellar offensive performance in the second half just wasn't enough to make up for a brutally slow start to the game and Matt McMahon extends to 1-11 in conference play on a twelve game losing skid. The Big 12 has approved of the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners request to exit the conference one year before their TV contracts expire, so in 2024 Texas and Oklahoma will join the Southeastern Conference. Tuesday night was the State of the Union for the entire country.
