Who doesn’t like chatting about art supplies? Okay, maybe it isn’t Richie’s favourite thing but it is mine. I absolutely love hearing about what artists use right down to the little details - the size of their brushes, preferred substrates, go-to colours, homemade tools - I want to know it all! Are you with me on this? I hope so, as this week I am running through my mixed media artist toolkit. We did an episode like this a while ago but it felt like it was time for an update! So join us as I chat about my latest loves. From the paints that make me swoon right through to the supplies that make Richie sparkle. Haha, all will be explained in the episode!  96. Phoebe Gander - Permission to Paint and Embrace My True Self | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:53:15

My guest today is mixed media artist, Phoebe Gander. Phoebe paints semi-abstract landscapes and seascapes that are rich with layers and textural details. Originally from England, Phoebe now lives in New Zealand with her husband and three children. This is a very raw and tender conversation. Phoebe talks about how coming back to art after a long break helped her to overcome severe anxiety, cope with her son’s extra needs (he has ADHD) and find purpose beyond motherhood. We also chat about how Phoebe’s art has changed and what it has been like to move away from resin and alcohol inks and return to her love of mixed media landscapes. I want to say a big thank you to Phoebe for being vulnerable in this episode and for encouraging all of us to embrace our differences. This week we answer a question about getting comfortable with being on camera. A fitting topic given that we have spent the last few weeks filming lessons for our upcoming online course, Modern Mixed Media. Richie also shares the checklist he uses to make sure that his cameras and microphones are set up and everything runs smoothly.  94. Sharing Our Biggest Failures (so far) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:45:28

This week we are talking about failure. Something Richie and I have become very familiar with! It’s easy to look at a person’s Instagram feed or website and feel like they have it all figured out but there’s a lot you don’t see. Over the years we have messed so many things up and questioned whether we are cut out for creative biz at all. If you feel like you are fumbling at the moment, we want you to know that you are not alone. We also want you to know that there is magic in those failures even if it is hard to see that right now. So with that said, join us as we share the failures we have had so far in our art business. From Richie’s reluctance to spend money on podcasting equipment right through to Laura’s questionable skills at packing a car for an art market - this conversation spans all sorts. There are failures in podcasting, filming, printing, painting, framing, accounting and more! We hope that you find it encouraging and relatable. There’s a lot of laughs in this one! I don’t know how many times I’ve said to Richie in the midst of a failure ‘If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry’. Never thought that would be one of my art biz mantras but it seems to help! We also chat about the importance of being free to explore as an artist and how we both express our vulnerability and multiple art personalities on platforms such as Instagram. And it wouldn’t be an art podcast without talking about our favourite supplies and paint brands! I hope you enjoy the conversation and if you haven't listened to Part 1, make sure you check out last week's episode.  Find the show notes for this episode with all the links at https://www.laurahornart.com/thepodcast/93 Register for my upcoming Ecourse, Modern Mixed Media at https://www.laurahornart.com/modernmixedmedia Follow me on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/laurahornart/ Susan's Links Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/susan.nethercote/ Website - https://www.susannethercotestudio.com/

 90. Getting a Studio Space Outside the Home | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:08

Is it better to have a studio at home or a studio offsite? A question that comes up again and again in the art community. I’ve always been in the home studio camp but that all changed 3 months ago! With the business growing and it becoming harder and harder to maintain boundaries between work and home, Richie and I took the plunge and leased a creative space together. Join us as we chat about how it happened, what we were looking for in a studio space and the pros and cons based on our experience so far. While it is pretty obvious that we are both ecstatic about this new development, we do want to say that for every artist it is different. What works for us might not work for you. The most important thing is that YOU are happy in the place that YOU create. That is truly all that matters! If you are finding it difficult to make art at the moment, you are not alone. There are many challenges that come with a pandemic. From taking up an art challenge to doing little art jobs for your future self - there’s bound to be something in there that will keep your creative mojo going! Richie and I also have a good laugh about the paintings that I have in the studio that are facing towards the wall. In other words, the ones that I don’t want to look at anymore! I wonder if anyone else relates to that? We hope you enjoy the conversation and would love to hear your thoughts on the challenge idea that Richie came up with!  88. Sonal Nathwani - The Power of Sketchbooks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:21

Sonal Nathwani has always loved sketchbooks. When she was a little girl she filled them with fashion designs, today they are often brimming with flowers. Throughout her life, they have been her safe place. Born in Africa to Indian parents, Sonal grew up in England, spent time studying art in Italy and now lives in Austria. While she has always loved art, when it came to a career choice she took the sensible option and became an accountant. She never fully let go of her art dream though and after her youngest son was born, she made the decision to leave her career in finance and pursue her passion for painting. In this conversation, Sonal talks about the importance of drawing, how she approaches her sketchbooks and the beautiful pressure of Instagram.  86. Inga Buive - Painting While My Son Naps | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:50:43
