FILM: Meet South Cox | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 32:03

"In a way... it's almost like life. You can take lessons you learn in the field and apply them to life and vice versa. There is so much you can learn with a bow in your hand." -- South CoxI just returned from a weekend scouting trip with my 12-year old daughter and my niece. Camping and hiking with them in the wilderness, sitting by the campfire and swimming in a cold mountain stream was rejuvenating. It felt good to get away from the pavement and the city and enjoy the outdoors. And for some reason, my scouting trip this weekend had me thinking about this film with South. I have fond memories of this visit to Stalker Stickbows. From the first moment I met South I liked him. We met at the Full Draw Film School in April 2014. My wife was diagnosed with cancer not long after that and South would PM me on Facebook every now and then to see how she was doing. South barely even knew me then. It was a very kind thing to do. Anyway, tonight I was just thinking about life and my kids and the peace I feel in the outdoors and it got me thinking about some of the things South talks about in this video so I had to come home and watch it again. I'm glad I did. If you haven't seen this film, take a minute and slow down. Set aside some quiet time and grab a cup of tea or whatever you like to drink and sit back and watch. Maybe South will inspire you to try your hand had a traditional bow. But if he doesn't, I hope his words and his views get you thinking about spending more of your time connected to nature instead of technology. Stay gritty.Brian Call

EPISODE 4: Are You a Stalker? Stalking Monster Mule Deer w/South Cox Stalker Stickbows Part 2 | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 39:13

That’s it for EPISODE 4 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast. Part 2 of Are you a Stalker? Stalking Monster Mule Deer w/South Cox & Stalker Stickbows.  I got a lot of information out of these two podcasts with South on how to kill a monster mule deer. In summary, South explained the need to have a positive attitude and Mental Toughness. Another key to his success is that South gets remote with a focus on wilderness areas. And South looks for hunting grounds with what he calls “Micro Topography” .South likes to stalk from above. This helps him with wind. Because deer bedded on hillsides tend to face downhill and therefore don’t see you coming. South also finds it easier to sneak in on the animal from above when you need to stay low or crawl. Unlike some hunters, South likes to wait until the animal beds down before he stalks his deer. South recommends buying the best glass you can afford. South stressed the importance of mounting your binoculars to a tripod. And when glassing, don’t just glass from the main ridgeline. Walk out on the finger-ridges that branch off the main ridge line and glass to the end of the finger ridge. South likes lightweight boots that have soft soles—he finds them quieter and they help him when hopping through a boulder field. He mentioned Solomon boots, the Lowa Zephyr, Lowa Renegade, and one of his favorites, the Ahnu Elk Ridge Mid. At 70 to 100 yards from his quarry, South sheds his boots and dons a thick pair of socks to silently close the distance. But he recommends marking the location of your boots somehow so you don’t lose your boots. And South likes Smoke in a Bottle brand wind checker. South carries 3 things in his front right pocket. Chapstick, lens cloth, and  Smoke in a bottle. www. stalkerstickbows.comhttp://www.ahnu.comhttp://moccasinjoedist.com/store/unscented-smoke/43-smoke-in-a-bottle.htmlhttp://www.lowaboots.comI hope you enjoyed this podcast as much as I did. Please take a moment to leave us a rating or a review on iTunes and or our Youtube channel.
