When was the last time the Giants played complementary football? Anyone?  The answer is not this year. The offense can't get things going, and worst of all, it seems like the same mistakes and issues are popping up every...single...week. What specifically, you might ask?  Trouble picking up a stunt by the offensive line is a big problem.  Quarterback Daniel Jones not seeing the entire field is another (yes, he was under duress a lot, but there were plenty of times when he had sufficient time to step up in the pocket and make plays had he looked around). The turnovers--for the love of the above, can this team get through one stinking game without a shoot-your-self-in-the-foot turnover? The running game? A little bit better this week, but I'm still not sure I like it that Jones is leading the team in rushing every week, nor am I crazy about how the running backs have been deployed. For those not aware, I have a new book out called The Big 50: New York Giants: The Men and Moments that Made the New York Giants.  When I was researching that book, I had the herculean task of combing through over 90 years of Giants history and narrowing thousands of men and events down to 50 of the most significant ones in team history. Unfortunately, no moments involving the Rams made the cut (oops! I should have said "spoiler alert" there), but that doesn't mean that there haven't been some memorable moments between these two clubs, who have met 44 times in the regular-season. So on today's LockedOn Giants podcast, I have selected three games, one of which many of you will probably remember and two which date back to the 1980s (including this ugly moment that left me stewing for weeks after). Are we there yet? If you've ever had a child or heck, maybe when you were a child yourself, I'm sure that at some point during a long car ride, those four little words --Are we there yet?--popped up once or twice. Well, that question is the theme of this week's listener mailbag, with several questions coming in not even moments before the Week 2 gamebook was finalized from last week's Giants loss to the Bears. Giants fans are growing impatient with the team's slow starts and seemingly perpetual hovering in the same vicious cycle. (Though trust me, folks, this latest stretch of bad Giants football still doesn't rival the Wilderness of the mid-1960s through the 1970s.) Fans are looking for improvement--any sign of progress--that this team is headed in the right direction.  But just as was the case on that long car ride where, as you passed certain milestones, you knew you were getting closer to the final destination, the Giants are not quite yet driving in the speed lane, and they haven't quite passed enough milestones for anyone to say that they're "almost" there or "there." It's easy to lose sight of where the team is in the wins and losses, but the first step for this team to show that it's almost there is to show improvement each week. And if you look closely, you will see signs of that from the second half of last week's game. I get it; it's not enough progress, and it's coming at a snail's pace.   I know it sounds hard, and I don't mean to sound preachy, but sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride and trust, at least, in this case, that head coach Joe Judge, the driver of this rather lengthy Giants journey to respectability, knows where he's going and how to get there.   Learn more about your ad choices. I have a confession to make. I'm not expecting much from Sunday's Week 3 matchup between the Giants and 49ers at MetLife Stadium due to the injuries. I mean, injuries take the life out of a matchup for me because I like to see the teams go at full strength. So in coming up for a topic for today's podcast, I began feeling a bit nostalgic and decided to go back in time to my three favorite Giants-49ers games in the series history.
