In this episode I give you a quick overview of what I’ve been up to, some upcoming plans, and then dive in to an interview with Laurence Moroney. His latest book, “Foundations of Atlas”, is a great book for .NET developers looking to jumpstart their AJAX efforts. Laurence’s long experience with AJAX, his access to some of the Atlas team during its development, and his passion for web software combine to make this a great book for beginners and advanced developers alike. Unbeknowst to me, this is the one year anniversary of this podcast. Didn’t mention that in the intro, but it came nonetheless! NOTE – the ‘flash player’ version of this is sped up. I interview Nate Schutta and Ryan Asleson about their book “Foundations of AJAX”, and give away two copies to our drawing winners. I also put out a call for Postgresql developers who can help with setting up replication under Windows.

This is a bit of a ‘tie up loose ends’ podcast – we hear from a listener in Sweden about typical PHP OOP usage and learn about Yahoo!’s commitment to PHP, a PHP/.NET compiler, an upcoming AJAX conference, how I’m getting paid to use wordpress, and how parsing RSS isn’t the easiest thing in the world.

I made one mistake and one omission in episode 16 which I attempt to correct soon after the crime. This is primarily about an added benefit of OO in PHP which was meant to be discussed in episode 16 but was overlooked.

In this episode, I take some questions from the audience about PHP, OO concepts and PHP5 hosting. Also, I discuss the release of the Yahoo UI widgets and the recent purchase of Sleepycat by Oracle.

We have the first book giveaway and cover the Aardvark Firefox extension. I also explain some MySQL performance problems I’ve had recently, talk about some MySQL tools which helped me get over those problems, and ask for some help on a CSS layout question.

In this episode we hear from Brian Grayless, developer of phatJax, introducing his new AJAX toolkit. I introduce two ways of using free tools to run desktop Linux from inside Windows, and give some code examples of using Javascript to reduce large HTML forms by dynamically creating pulldowns. I also introduce my new weblog at fosterburgess.com.

This episode serves as a bit of a catchup to fill you in on some topics that have cropped up recently, both in my web work and perhaps just a little bit outside of that realm. Perl CPAN modules, witnessing a Ruby on Rails development effort, MonkeyGrease is ‘the server side greasemonkey’. Also, there are some web appl jobs listed in the forums.
