Be There in Five show

Be There in Five

Summary: Grounded in the topics that distract host Kate Kennedy (entrepreneur, author, pop culture commentator) on a daily basis, Be There in Five explores all facets of popular culture in a thoughtful, analytical, editorialized, and comedic format. Kate covers a wide range of topics reflecting the current zeitgeist, i.e. celebrities, bloggers/influencers, social media, and tv/moves/music, but also focuses on the humor found in reexamining the 90s/00s zeitgeist as an adult, from AIM to Zenon. Whether musing about how so many 24-year-old bloggers have 5 kids and millions of dollars, poking holes in popular self-help gurus advice, deep diving about influencer/social media scandals, or explaining Taylor Swift's clue-dropping marketing strategy, Kate aims to dive into the topics everyone's talking about in chat rooms that don't get represented in newsrooms. (And by chat rooms, she realizes it's not 1999, but it sounded more quippy than online forums and Facebook groups). Beyond the more lighthearted topics, Kate is also a seasoned entrepreneur (of her namesake company Be There in Five) who is honest about her struggles in real-time and invites her listeners along as she, too, is trying to make it as a 30 something living in Chicago. Above all else, Kate started this podcast to champion lovers of pop culture by taking the guilt out of guilty pleasures. By speaking about the zeitgeist in an intelligent, unique, and humorous way, she hopes to assure listeners that these topics have value, contribute to society, and the only naïve people are those who refuse to acknowledge their influence.

 28: *~*gUrLz OnLy*~* | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:00

This week, Kate inadvertently spends an hour talking about topics that are remnant of her girly-girl essence in the '90s; from celeb gossip/blind items, a comparison of Felicity Merriman to Gwyneth Paltrow and yet another deep dive on American Girl Dolls, to buying Teen magazines in secret in the '90s (before she was a teenager - talk about true crime!), to educational TV shows like The City and Gossip Girl, to her issues with perfume and makeup ads. A fun, easy, breezy episode. Sashay, Shantay.

27: Mostly Mollie Tibbetts, Spelling Bees, Kourtney v. Kim, Bachelorette Finale, RHONY | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:00

Songs about shaking, yet another argument for how we choose words, my days as an (almost) champion speller, a brief poem, Kourtney v. Kim, The Bachelorette Finale, 90 Day Fiance, Real Housewives of Cartagena, my obsession with the Mollie Tibbetts case. A true cornucopia of topics that I cannot connect into one clever title for the life of me. Enjoy!

26: Rise Up Lights, My Bull Fine! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:31:00

This week, Kate covers a large spectrum of 90s, pop culture, and personal topics, but stick with it towards the end, where she announces something she wants to try doing with listeners to feature their stories instead of getting a Blue Apron sponsorship. Too much chopping. Before that, there are some '90s musings as usual, from Zenon to the Scholastic Book Fair, to the ice at Pizza Hut, to more serious ones about how to know if the person you're dating is "the one," and some thoughts on the empty inspiration of instagram quotes but lack of follow through in how we support women. But then she contradicts herself as usual, talking through confusion regarding Kylie's $1M tea ad, jealousy her and Tugboat feel toward Dug the Pug's meteoric rise to fame, beauty gurus' lack of self-awareness (and overstated concept of how much we all care about pigmentation), and general boredom with instagram stories feeling like one big QVC Lisa Rinna duster episode. She also reveals the names of her make believe eye shadow palette with Morphe, shows off even more of her super accurate Australian accent, and walks through a Catfish-internet-sleuthing case she (thinks) she cracked in a Facebook group that solves crimes by dinnertime.

 25: Whatever You Like (Pop Culture Q&A) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:32:00

Feeling somewhat uninspired by pop culture this week, Kate takes to Instagram and Facebook to get questions from Podcast listeners. However, she still manages to discuss other topics for the first half hour, covering gold diggers in a feminist era, her days on the bev cart at a golf course, influencers at #Revolve's exclusive crop top bonanza, and Astrology, among other topics. Listener Q&A starts around minute 35, covering Bachelor/Bachelorette from years past (when it was good), Karlie Kloss' engagement, Demi Lovato's ODing news, celeb crushes, small business advice, RHOC, RHONY, etc. Enjoy!

 24: Self-Made Thousandaire | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:00

This week, Kate tackles Kylie Jenner's "self-made" billionaire status, both giving her the credit she deserves while also exploring how it makes her feel as somebody who started a business with nothing. She then dives into the weird world of ASMR YouTube videos, then somehow pivots into wondering if some people solely write lyrics based off of old AIM Buddy Info quotes, while simultaneously musing about why Boogie Boarding is wasted on the young, her beef with Brad Paisley, why she's now a health goddess after making one green juice, thoughts on the movie I Feel Pretty/focusing on our outward appearances, then moving onto what she's learned watching other people be way more successful than her at something she created.

 23: King of Wishful Drinking | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:50

Monday morning musings on the past week's pop culture events, i.e. Justin Bieber & Hailey Baldwin's engagement, Joyce Bonelli (and other Kardashian glam squad fallouts), Becca Tilley's rumored romance (according to the internet), I still can't believe I used to hate Below Deck, Very Cavallari, some Real Housewives, my hopes and dreams in the form of beverage services, all bookended by a very important King and a most energetic Queen. Enjoy!

 22: Paint the Town Eggshell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:13:00

This week Kate goes through an iPhone note of all the celebrities she's seen or met in person, but not before going through some thoughts on social media's depiction of the 4th of July, a brief analysis of the poetry written by one Edwin McCain, her strategy if she would have been selected for the Toys R Us Super Toy Run, what life would have been like with a Power Wheel, concerns for Toby Keith's America / a burning desire to people watch at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar, the passive aggressive messages she sends to her sister's exes on Venmo, some of her favorite music moments in TV history, among other topics. Enjoy!

21: Tattoo Good to be True (A GrandSon Special) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:00

Ariana Grande & Pete Davidson's relationship timeline, told through a series of stories that, while unrelated, all tie back. A lot to unpack here, but I'll just let you listen.  20: Relax, Cate Blanchett | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:13:00

Not about Cate Blanchett. Discusses the following: Movie trailer songs. Unlikeable actresses on red carpets. Ask her more but like, you should also ask about the free dress. Going into survival mode, like sitting in middle seats on planes. Thomas Markle is STILL TALKING TO THE PRESS. Social media pet peeves. WHY IS EVERYONE ON SOUTHERN CHARM INJURED? Craig's stock photo pillow designs and Austen's arduous beer flavor selection have me concerned for my generation. Bragging about my anniversary gift. Mommy bloggers. A cameo from someone very special. Fin.

 19: Bold, Yet Unassuming | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:24

Weirdly about nothing, but one of my favorites yet, maybe. I need to listen to it. I had fun recording it, hopefully it's fun to listen to? As always, a vaguely interconnected stream of consciousness merging personal anecdotes with pop culture analyses, bookended by two 1990s jams. Discussing my weekend, hometown, thoughts on the wine tasting workd / obsession with wine documentaries, dieting, Amal Clooney, personality tests, the Cardi B / Meghan Markle effect, the perils of working from home, Judd Apatow movies, love of chain restaurants, karaoke selections, twice baked potatoes, and who knows what else.

18: Quick(ish) Week Recap Episode: Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, T Swift Concert, etc. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:34:00

Kate starts out sharing about her experience dancing amongst the 12 year olds at the Taylor Swift concert, but upon hearing about this week's tragic news of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, discusses her perspective on what we currently know, the media's angle, and her perspective on the dialogue surrounding mental health. Not the most upbeat episode, but an important conversation nonetheless.

 17: NCIYAAAS | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:03:00

This is totally a True Crime podcast about seduction, forgiveness, deception, denial, and ultimately survival.* *It's not, that is the description of Dirty John. I'm just trying to get people to listen to my podcast and I don't stand a chance at the top 10 unless it's murder-adjacent. This week we discuss how I anticlimactically sleuthed a Craigslist scam, body image issues, underrated 80s power ballads, night-ending songs that kick you out of bars, the importance of balancing subject matter expertise in one's Pub Trivia team, my confusion with the evolution of Jessica Simpson's vocals, the pointlessness of current FaceTune witch hunts, Kim K at the White House, and my thoughts on problem-solving an incessant need to compare ourselves to other people.

16: RHONY, Southern Charm, 90 Day Fiance Bonus Recap Episode | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:34

A thorough review of some of my current favorite shows, i.e. this week's (lack of) drama on Real Housewives of New York and my disdain for organized fun such as murder mystery parties. Then I walk through what I'm loving about Southern Charm, the recent TRav scandals, the deep deep anger I have toward Ashley bringing up Kathryn's children, Chelsea's all around breeziness, among other topics. I think I may even defend Craig at one point and then take things out on Gwynn's department store. Finally, a deeper review of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After, where I talk about this dark season opener, how it's getting too difficult to watch Nicole and Molly provide such bad examples for their kids, and then the characters from season's past that I'm missing. Who knew I'd one day miss Evelyn's voice haunting my dreams? Somehow I also talk about Annie the musical so, there's that.

15: Wrapping Up the Weekend (like a Warm Biscuit on a Sunday Morning) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:32

Kate discusses the past weekend's events; including (but not limited to) the Royal wedding, the Billboard Music Awards, this K-Pop group that makes a lot of people scream that she feels confused about, how Kate feels about 'Woo Girls' who do this aforementioned screaming, how she feels about hot girls posting captions about food, and also thoughts on being forced to be in bathing suit photos posted against my will. Good times all around!

14: Royal Wedding Minisode: A Poem for Meghan Markle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:17:10

This week, to prep for the Royal Wedding, Kate is sharing some brief musings on televised weddings, the current Markle family controversy, creating the optimal viewing experience, and why it's not to be trivialized by all the naysayers that will inevitably give us a hard time in the coming days. Following, to commemorate this special time, Kate has written a poem, entitled Meghan Her Markle, where she explores the love story of Harry & Meghan, their engagement, her nightmare family, and how she'd be feeling pulling up in that carriage. Spoiler alert: Kate is still really, really hung up on getting engaged over a roasted chicken.
