Advice for Photography Students // Fan Session 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:51:22

Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.6 In July 2018 I made a post on Instagram saying that I wanted to teach one-on-one classes with my listeners and readers, and I asked if anyone would be interested. On this week's episode of Project Freelance, I have a young photographer joining me. Her name is Nicole, and her user tag is @Kaoruphotography2019, and she reached out to me over Instagram about a photography project she had for a class in school. And since I have a lot of high schoolers that reach out to me about needing advice for their project, I figured that I might as well start with Nicole. I knew that I had to jump on board with this immediately, because I wish I had somebody there for me when I was stuck and had questions. In this episode we discussed Nicole’s project, what her goals are for that project, and how she can take her ideas and turn them into visual works of art.  In order for me to help her I had her send me a set of photos she had taken so I could critique them, and I was absolutely tickled pink when I saw how talented this young photographer is. Click this link to see those photos: www.justtheletterk.com/single-post/advice-for-photography-students If you have a school project that you need help with, or would just like to pick another creator's brain, I highly recommend you reach out to me so we can set up a class of our own, and get you started on the right path to your dream job!!  Follow Nicole on Instagram to keep up with her photography journey at http://Instagram.com/Kaoruphotography2019 Enjoy this episode of Project Freelance and let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving a review and (5 star) rating.   Enjoy this episode of Project Freelance and let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving a review and (5 star) rating.   For classes/booking: http://justtheletterk.com/booking Read on to support the podcast!  The Custom Guitar Fretboard Ring // How a Valentines Gift Turned Into a Job // Jareds Ring Shop | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:48

Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.5 Jared has been designing and creating rings for several years now. It all started out as a romantic gift idea for Valentines day and unexpectedly became a majority of Jared's income. He comes from a construction family so working with the necessary machinery to produce his rings wasn't difficult for him to master. Because Jared spends so much time on the road, working remotely with his construction crew, he had to find a way to make his rings in hotel rooms without leaving a massive mess or disturbing other guests. He has trimmed down his gear to what he can easily carry on the road, which also minimises his space at home, which is also his office. Jared's primary passion lies with wood rings, specifically bentwood rings. He has developed his own steam bending, inlaying, and finishing techniques to produce the sturdiest rings with intricate and unique designs. "I love what I do and truly believe each and every ring that leaves my shop clearly expresses my dedication to the craft!" - Jared Get Socialistic with Jared: Buy a Fretboard Ring: https://jaredsringshop.com/ http://instagram.com/jareds.ring.shop For classes/booking: http://justtheletterk.com/booking Read on to support the podcast!  Getting Your Music Discovered Worldwide | Fan Lesson 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:46

Lesson 1: Getting Your Music Discovered Worldwide Check this out! My guest this week is Angelo, a fan from Paris! Angelo booked a skype lesson with me and it ended up turning into an amazing conversation about live music from the perspective of two people from across the world. I wanted to ask Angelo how the music scene in Paris was and he wanted to get a better idea of what Warped Tour was all about. Angelo and I discuss the end of Warped Tour and what that means for America. Angelo asked me if I recorded everything myself for my album, SPLIT, and what my musical background was. I grew up singing in school, but never formally studied music. I have Eric Ferraro to thank for the amazing instrumentals on the album, and some of my covers on Youtube. He is a huge part of Chasing Satellites. I recently brought Rian Cunningham on board to start writing with me. Check out the episode I recorded with Rian.  Getting Your Parents to Let You Tour - with Rian Cunningham | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:33

Project Freelance - Season 2, Ep.15 This week on Project Freelance, I have Rian Cunningham, a Toronto native who produces and writes music. Rian actually flew down to California to meet up with me so we could work on a musical endeavour together. Rian has been playing and producing music since he was in high school, which allowed him to make plenty of mistakes and learn from them. His first show was with his high school band and that show went so well that they were invited to play a festival shortly after. Rian has always jumped at every musical opportunity, whether it be behind the screen producing or jumping around on stage. Rian touches on some of his favorite software, plugins, presets, and favorite producers at the moment, so for those of you ABOUT TO ROCK Logic, you should definitely check this episode out.  The Secret to Success with Nic Bradly of Welcome To The Good Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:41

Project Freelance - Season 2, Ep.14 Let’s talk about the law of attraction. You see, when you figure out the secrets to success you will be unstoppable. Our problem, as humans, is that we get so in our heads about the possibility of rejection that we talk ourselves out of taking risks. Instead of convincing yourself not to step outside of your comfort zone, embrace the discomfort, love it, and conquer it, because once you do become comfortable being uncomfortable, your confidence will skyrocket, which will help you grow your business, and personal, relationships. This is only one of the many "secrets" to success that I will be discussing in this episode with my incredibly talented guest, and friend, Nic Bradly, a life-coach, photographer, graphic designer, musician, and host of the Youtube show Welcome To The Good Life! Graphic design was Nic’s first art form, with a heavy focus in photoshop. As he moved into other art forms he realized how unreliable people are, so his graphic design skills came in handy when it came to his personal projects, like the twelve different bands he played in. Why pay someone to design a shirt that you can design yourself? Nic, having learned how to create energy, through the law of attraction, clever marketing, and hiss knowledge of branding, he found himself in the top fifty contestants, out of 10,000, to compete in front of the judges of the X Factor. It was a defining moment for Nic and pushed him to work harder than he ever had before. Failure was no longer an option for him and he know if he was going to pursue something that he'd have to give it his everything. He refused to settle for a "real job." His philosophy is that a job truly stands for "Just Over Broke." A job isn’t meant to be permanent, you see. A job is supposed to get you through to the next step. A CAREER, however, is where you see yourself, where you define yourself. Your career should be fulfilling you and f you’re not obsessed with what you do, you need to get obsessed. We eat, sleep, and drink this shit. Happiness is short term, while fulfillment lasts a lifetime. Fulfillment comes when you find and chase your passions. As an artist in 2018 you have to learn how to do so many things. For example, I am currently writing a blog for the podcast I recorded, which I will upload onto my website, that I created, to accompany this episode. I will also be uploading a video of this podcast onto my Youtube channel, and I could go on and on and on. I just edited a music video for my own band. We have to do it all. At the end of the day, this episode is all about learning how to just relax and live The Good Life.  Creating Merch for Bands With Nick Lament Of Music Over Matter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:36:21

Project Freelance - Season 2, Ep.13 If you want to start AND successful merch line, this podcast is a must for you! Use "PROJECTFREELANCE" for 15% off your order at http://www.musicovermatterclothing.com/ This week I am excited to bring you Nick Lament, creator of the fantastic, overly caffeinated merchandise company, Music Over Matter. Nick created Music Over Matter, because of his love for music and storytelling. It has since turned into a movement. The name of the brand comes from a line of lyrics in a song Nick had written, “Music Over Matter.” He established the clothing line in 2011 and has outlasted a majority of other clothing/merch.  As a Jamaican, Nick has had the opportunity to work at some of the biggest festivals in his native country. When he first started, he found that it was a bit more difficult to find his audience, because his designs weren’t “edgy” enough, but he refused to conform to the current trends of the hardcore scene. His first festival was actually in Jamaica, which was headlined by Skrillex, Major Lazer, DJ Snake, and Rudimental, and he was afraid that his brand wouldn’t sell at the show, but it is still the top festival he has worked. The perk of putting himself in that position was that he learned that you can cross over genres and barriers, if you just put yourself out there and grind.   Around the time he launched the brand, Nick quickly gained support from his friend, Sisco, of Eyes Set To Kill, whom Nick had been writing music with. ESTK's support has continued to push and inspire Nick's vision. He also has Garrett Rapp from The Color Morale to thank for his growth, as Garret was a vital influence in Nick's life. One of his first designs was created by Angelo of Motionless in White gained a ton of exposure, which helped further build the brand’s supporters.    Music Over Matter Clothing will be out on the last run of Warped Tour this summer, so Nick and I obviously had to talk about our thoughts on Warped Tour ending, what we learned on the tour, and how it has impacted our lives.  Should You Give Them the RAW files? | Jon Vulpine Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:54:05

Project Freelance - Season 2, Ep.13 If you want to know how to get started shooting music videos for both independent and SIGNED bands, this is the podcast for you. Jon Vulpine is an award-winning director and editor with over 10 years of experience creating content all over the world. He has sharpened his skills in the music video industry over the last 7 years with a passion for striking visual content, coffee and loud cars.  Jon and I have a lot in common. His friend asked if he could film a music video for his friend's band and Jon, who didn't have a clue what he was doing, took it on, which is what I did as well, for my own band.  For example, let's use something you might be more familiar with, like your car! So, you have the title to your car, right? That means that you own that car. BUT, should someone get ahold of the title, which is literally a tiny piece of paper, by the way, they can take that title into the DMV and LEGALLY change the name on the title, which effectively transfers your ownership to them.  So! Your RAW files are the title to your film/photo. If you give someone your RAW footage they can do whatever they want with it; edit it, claim it as theirs, sell it, etc. You wouldn't want someone to take the title to your car, so why would you let them take your footage? Just because a video isn't tangible doesn't mean you don't have ownership over it.  Here's the biggest issue I face as a freelancer is that when a client doesn't like what they hear they tend to get defensive, which leads to frustration and anger. Sometimes they will even threaten you, but at the end of the day you must remember that there is a lot of power in saying "no." I have burnt bridges with "friends" because I refused to send the RAW footage, but that brings the legitimacy of our friendship into question. I believe this is why "don't work with your friends" exists. When money or services aren't valued and you are trying to stand up for yourself it tends to be detrimental to relationships.   Podcast Mentions:  Videostatic Vimeo Youtube Get socialistic with Jon: jonvulpine.com/ | https://www.instagram.com/jonvulpine For classes/booking: http://justtheletterk.com/booking Read on to support the podcast!  Photo Pit Crash Course - AshlyNicolePhoto | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:09:20

In this episode of the Project Freelance podcast Ashly and I delve into photo pit etiquette, how to plan out your rates, studying your competition's skills, and researching what local businesses are around you.  The first show she shot was Lights in 2012 and she was instantly hooked. Shortly after that night, Ashly asked a publication if she could shoot at Vans Warped Tour for them and they made it happen. I think a lot of photographers dream of shooting Warped Tour, and this was no different for Ashly. Shooting Warped Tour was her icing on the cake.  Ashly didn't know anything about show etiquette, which threw her for a spin until she found her...tripod? Here are some of the simple rules of shooting in a photo pit: Pay attention to the veteran photographers. they live in pits and know what they’re doing. Watch and respect them. Trust me. It will get you a long way  You get to shoot the first three songs. After the third song, get the fuck out of the pit.  Do not lean on, or put your gear on the stage.  Stay out of the way. You are capturing the show, not performing in it.  STAY OFF THE STAGE (unless you have express permission from the band, TM, and venue).  Introduce yourself to the security guards and other photographers in the photo pit. They will be occupying the same space as you, so be polite.  Pay attention to what's going on around you.  Be as creative as you want without being a distraction.  Don't bring your iphone in the photo pit.  If you get hired by someone and take advantage of the position you are in, whether it be getting friends backstage without express permission from the head TM, your TM, and the band. If you follow the tour and claim to be on the tour, or a part of the tour, you are putting liability on the tour. NEVER TAKE A PHOTO OF YOUR LAMINATE! Someone WILL make a fake pass and could jeopardize the safety of the entire crew. Don't ever let anyone see you type the code for your bus, because..well..obvious reasons. Safety is important.  Ashly is a self taught photographer who had a strong creative support system behind her. She had some amazing photographers to look up to and some talented creators in her friend circle. She went to the Art Institute, but didn't gain much out of taking their online course. She recommends that you look into studying on a campus rather than trying to learn online at home.  The best part of freelancing is getting to be your own boss. Ashly likes that she gets to create different types of content, from photos to videos to editing, etc. etc. etc. She's had a lot of experience working "real jobs," and she definitely prefers not having a traditional 9-5 job. Getting to work for yourself means you get to BE yourself.  Podcast Mentions:  Adam Elmakias Ashley Osborne Mesa Askgar Vans Warped Tour  Alternative Press For classes/booking: http://justtheletterk.com/booking Read on to support the podcast!  Shooting for Emo Nite - With Alex Wolf | Concert Photography 101 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:53

Project Freelance - Season 2, Ep.11 Alex Wolf is a freelance music/entertainment & commercial videographer, currently living on the East Coast where there is a lot of pulled pork BBQ and humidity. Growing up, she frequented a venue in Raleigh, NC, where she first saw Attack Attack, but sadly, like most great videos, it is no longer open.. When she turned 18, she became extremely ill, and reached out to the Warped Tour staff and Alex received VIP passes and a press pass to shoot the show. From there, she kept that connection alive through the years, unitl this year. She met Common Ground Records, who had a band named Small Talks, who won the Skullcandy Battle of the Bands competition. The band brought her out on their leg of the 2017 Vans Warped Tour, where she gained the experience of a lifetime, met some incredible people, and learned how to live out in the elements, lol.  We obviously also bring up the sad fact that Vans Warped Tour is coming to an end this summer and I ask Alex what she thinks will take its place. Will one of you start a new touring festival, or will an incredible group like the Emo Nite family create something new? What do you think?  Alex shoots frequently for Emo Nite, which, if you don't know what that is, please look into it immediately! They're doing a lil' tour. Some of the projects that Alex has worked on include Camera crew Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Super Deluxe, Demi Lovato singing Paramore clip (TMZ, MTV, etc), Absolute Merch content, Warped Tour videographer for Small Talks.  In this episode we talk about some of the important health aspects of being a freelancer. We often forget to take care of ourselves, because we are always so hyperfocused on our work. Time management is something I have personally struggled with,  For my photographer readers/listeners, it's important for you to build relationships in this industry. You must absolutely be respectful to everyone at the venue. You have to remember that you are there to do a job and so are the venue staff. Do not hassle the security guards, because they are not only keeping the kids and bands safe, but they're also going to be looking out for you. Concert etiquette is extremely vital if you want to succeed in this industry.  Alex is currently working on a few various music related projects, promo pieces for local businesses in the region and polishing up a mini documentary about Cayley Spivey (Small Talks)/Mental health in the music industry. Also on the pursuit of finishing her undergraduate degree in May. "Available for summer tours/the grandest of grand - Warped Tour. Also still on pursuit of the best coffee beans to make cold brew with, so please lmk." - Alex Get Socialistic with Alex: http://alexwolffilms.com instagram.com/alexwolfdoes For classes/booking: http://justtheletterk.com/booking Read on to support the podcast!  How to Create Lasting Content feat. Christina Rotondo | Music & Youtube Tips | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:03

Project Freelance - Season 2, Ep.12 Are you new to Youtube and want to showcase your music? Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not all that simple. Not what you wanted to hear? Why, because it's honest? Well, welcome to Project Freelance; the uncensored, unfiltered, and raw podcast that gives listeners an authentic insight into the film, photography, music, and other creative freelancing fields. My guest on this week's episode of your favourite freelancing advice podcast, Project Freelance, is Christina Rotondo, a musician, vocalist, and content creator based in Nottinghamshire in the UK. I sit down with Christina to chat about the current state of the Youtube platform, how it's affecting new and long time content creators, and what it takes to become successful online in an overly saturated market. I know you've probably heard this tale hundreds of times by now, from your favorite creators, whether it's them telling you that vlogging "ruined their relationship" or that they're "quitting the daily videos," etc. etc., but this is not that tale. New creators need to realise how difficult it can be to "make it" in this data filled, fast-paced, instantaneous time we live in. This podcast is for all of us, so we can hopefully learn and teach more people how to survive in this market. Since publishing her videos to YouTube, Christina Rotondo has continued to gain a following of over 51,000 subscribers and has accumulated over 4.7 million views to her videos. She creates a variety of content, from composing unique alternative versions of songs, original material, to quality video content for brands, ranging from music endorsements to beauty and lifestyle. If you want to make this work, you have to have multiple sources of income. Youtube is falling apart and everyone wants to know where they should go next, but as a musician, you already have a leg up, because you can get work outside of Youtube. Christina has had the opportunity to work on projects like Guitar Hero Live. Youtube can't be your be-all-end-all. Look at some of your favorite creators and you'll see that many of them have companies, makeup and clothing lines, they act, etc. etc.. Youtube is going back to what it originally was, a social media platform. The creators that are genuine and authentic will stand out and stay in the subscribers folders. If you believe in your content, create more, create often, and push yourself.  How I Made My Documentary "Respect The Crew" | Film & Photography Tips | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:46:18

Ever since filming my first documentary in 2011 about a dog that was rescued from a dog fighting ring, I knew that some stories were too good, to make up. Fast forward to now. I've dedicated myself to sharing the stories of others through my lens. I met Black Veil Brides in 2016, while on set of their Alternative Press Magazine cover shoot. I filmed a behind the scenes video at that shoot, which led to video after video after video with Andy for promotional plugs for the Alternative Press Music Awards, which he hosted in 2017. View at KEnagonioPhotography.com/client-videos-2017 Because I was making so much content on Warped Tour for AP and had built relationships with various crew and band members, I decided that I could use any spare time I had, between sets mostly, to create a few documentaries about some of the crew/bands on the tour. Having spent some time with Andy and the Andy Black crew, I began to interact with Matt Yanni, Andy's bodyguard. You see, as strange as it may seem, considering Andy and Black Veil's demographic is quite young and seemingly harmless, it's quite nessessary. I mean..have you ever tried to get five hundred screaming fans, that don't speak English, to stand in a single file line and to have their phones out and ready for ONE photo, and to give hundreds of hugs...wait..no hugs? No? Yeah, I thought not. Yanni is tasked with protecting not only Andy, but also looks after his wife Juliet, Andy's parents and grandparents, and doesn't suffer fools. Andy has had quite the career, full of shows and booze and a few fights here and there. Yanni has not only been a huge part of Andy and his family's lives, but he's also an important and integral part of the crew. This documentary is the first of several passion projects of mine, and I've spent the past four months sorting through 29,000 video clips to create not only this documentary about Yanni, but six seperate stories. My goal is 7K, because as you know, this industry is a bitch and as a growing freelancer, I am at the point where I am ready to ask for funding. I could go through a grant foundation, but I thought, hmm, would the fans, my friends, and lovers of documentaries, live music, and great stories want to be a part of funding my project? Check out the perks and join the crew. :) #RespectTheCrew Gofundme.com/respectthecrew FFor classes/booking: http://justtheletterk.com/booking Read on to support the podcast!
