Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.15 Capture Life As it Happens Order Barn Burner: barnburnermovie.com I met Eli Passage at Launch Music Conference last spring and watched the premiere of his film Barn Burner, which tells the story of the life, community, and music scene of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He teamed up with long time friend and filmmaker, Tyler Horst, on a three year journey to create a feature length documentary. Eli has had a passion for music since he started going to shows. The local Lancaster scene helped pull him out of his depression and sparked this idea to share the story of how music has impacted Lancaster and the people there. Tyler had been playing with cameras since childhood, but through high school and college it became more of a part of his life and he fell into documentary film work in college, thanks to a student journalism class. Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.14 Sobriety is the theme of this week's podcast. It can be difficult to avoid the "drugs" part of "sex, drugs, and rock and roll," and I wanted to chat with someone who has watched someone in this scene escape the drugs and fight for their sobriety and their life. Eric Flores manages merchandise for the band Slaves, who is fronted by Jonny Craig, one of the most talented vocalists of our time, in my opinion, and Jonny has a past riddled with demons and stories. Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.12 This week on Project Freelance I got to sit down with my best bud, Justin Conant (@JCPICS3) to talk about selling merch for bands on tour, photography on tour, and why Justin decided to step away from touring to focus on building a home life. We also talk about the importance of NOT STEALING FROM YOUR EMPLOYER! There are a lot of incredible people out there, but there are also plenty of snakes in the grass, that will do anything to get a leg up, an extra buck, or some notoriety. Don't be a dick, just do your job. We also go into the idea of "fan entitlement," which is the phenomenon of fans assuming that because they bought a ticket to see a band perform, that they should get one on one time with the band, dinner, a show, their left kidney, and a lock of hair. It's crazy, and ridiculous. Do you know how much time your favorite band that's coming to town gets to see the city? MAYBE an hour. MAYBE. Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.11 This week on Project Freelance I wanted to give you some tips on how to SAFELY get in and photograph abandoned buildings. Know Who You're Taking With You! You wouldn’t just let ANYONE into your secret treehouse, would you? So DONT LET RANDOM PEOPLE KNOW THE LOCATION OF YOUR ABANDONED BUILDING!  My number one tip for exploring abandoned buildings is “Take a Buddy!” I can’t stress this enough! It’s exactly the same as going on a hiking adventure. DO YOUR RESEARCH Take the time to research the place you are trying to explore. Just like a hiking trip, you want to know as much as possible about the area you’re going to be in. WHERE TO FIND LOCATIONS! So the number one question I get is "where do you find all of these places?" Well, how do you find Target, or Starbucks, or A Camp Site? You google it, ask someone, or go on instagram! Instagram is the best place to find locations, because of the introduction of hashtags! There are numerous hashtags you can use to find photos and videos of abandoned places, rooftops, cranes, tunnels, trains, and just about anything else you could want to explore. Try searching things like  #Urbex, #urbanexploration, #urbanexplore #abandoned, #abandonedhouse #urbex_kings #Kings_abandoned #abandonedlosangeles #abandonedchicago, #abandoneddetroit, #itsabandoned #moodygrams. ASK SOMEONE TO TAKE YOU
 Often times, us explorers would kill to explore a place a second time. It’s a lot more exciting when you KNOW the place and can share it with someone else who will appreciate it for the art, the history, and the decay. If I’m traveling somewhere for work I will set aside free time to go explore an abandoned place or two.  BRING THE RIGHT GEAR! The right exploration gear is important for a successful mission! Depending on what you are going into these buildings for, you need to bring in the right gear. As a photographer, I obviously bring camera gear, but if you are a tagger, for example, you’re going to bring a very different bag of gear.  LEAVE YOUR ID IN THE CAR! Put your keys on a carabiner, hook it on your belt loop, and tuck them into your pocket. You don’t want to sound like a janitor running through an abandoned jail. It’s loud and you WILL get caught. . TAKE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED 
 Other than camera gear I bring a head lamp, snacks, two bottles of water, baby wipes, hand sanitiser, and, because I’m a lady, a few tampons. You never know man. If you have a girl in your group it’s always nice to be prepared for shit like that. Trust me. GET PAID TO EXPLORE! So, I figured out a way to make money exploring these abandoned places, by photographing bands, clothing, amazon seller products, skateboards, or by filming a Youtube video, and selling the video footage and photos of the abandonment as stock photography and videography.

Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.10 Demo reels are the most important asset you have when it comes to getting hired as a freelancer. Why? Well, a demo reel is basically just a collection of your best work and your favorite work. I include "favorite work," because, while it's dope that you've done a bunch of corporate work and weddings, but what have you done that looks badass AND is your own creative work? Why not show it off a little? So, demo reels are not only for filmmakers. Photographers, architects, dancers, athletes, and actors all use demo reels when applying for new gigs. If you watch any sporting event on TV you will see what's known as a "highlight" reel, which shows the best plays that were made in the game, as well as highlight reels of the best players and their achievements. While these aren't "demo reels" specifically, they do the same thing; they highlight the best footage of the best parts of the game. The person who EDITS all of those highlight reels, which I've done a few myself, can then use those videos IN their demo reel, to show that they are capable of editing short form digital content, and THAT is what gets you hired by ESPN. For musicians, this is essentially what your EPK, or Electronic Press Kit, is. It's a collection of your best work that is used to pitch your band to potential management, labels, sponsors, etc. If you need someone to make your highlight reel/demo reel you can definitely reach out to either myself, or you can look on Upwork.com for some incredible freelancers. Project Freelance - Season 3, Ep.8 Who will create the next "Warped Tour?" Is it you? Maybe a friend you have? Share this episode with them! It's full of strategies and tips on how Kevin brought "the scene" out of the underground and into the streets, literally...the venues were parking lots, plots of land, stadiums, and I believe they closed down part of the Vegas strip for the final Warped Tour. I have wanted to pick Kevin Lyman's brain since I 2014 and I knew that NOW was the time to do it. Warped Tour has closed it's gates after 24 years of crazy angst-filled summers, and the man behind the whole thing has given his everything to keep it going, and, upon recording this podcast, almost his life. I was met with a post-op Kevin, who, because "the show must go on," let an infection in his knee, that he had replaced, bring him into SCEPTIC SHOCK!! That's some crazy dedication! In this episode of Project Freelance I talk with Kevin about his youth, how he built his legacy, and we talk about how the scene has changed and what the introduction and growth of social media has affected live music.
