 No. 119 - Auston Translation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:26:12

Boxscores! Line juggling! On-ice events! Terrible goaltending performances! They're all finally here after a long season of waiting, and the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast is here to catch you up on all that you need to know about the first five days of NHL regular season play. First off, what the heck should you do with your team post-draft? Should you tinker with adds/drops or stand pat? Elan and Brian dish out some advice on early season management strategies, describing how they evaluate and react to the first handful of games played in a season. Next, they dig into the first week's most tantalizing performances, rolling through a list of the vets, rookies and tweeners who are scoring above a point-per-game pace at this early stage, and making the call on whether they're 'add now!!'s or wait-and-sees.  Elan and Brian then go over a handful of injuries, specifically speculating on what the heck might happen in LA's crease. A discussion of players on cold streaks-- or, well, whatever you'd call guys who are scoreless in back to back games to start the season-- rounds out the show.  No. 118 - Dinged Crosby | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:25:55

Two sleeps until the NHL regular season begins, but the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast is already in full swing with a new episode jam-packed with all of the latest hockey news and fantasy spin.  We start with two awful real-life injuries that have an urgent fantasy impact, suggesting which Penguins and Panthers may get or take a bump while Crosby and Huberdeau are on the shelf. Then, Elan and Brian turn their attention to the NHL's waiver wire, where 3 more-than-serviceable players sit after being surprisingly let go in advance of the season opener. In particular, Brian plays the role of wet blanket to perfection by doubting whether Ondrej Pavelec's waiving means clear skies ahead for Hellebuyck, and also provides his dream scenario for P.A. Parenteau in 2016-17. The guys then roll through some of the season's newest Calder Trophy candidates as news trickles out of which prospects are making their teams out of camp, with stops in Philadelphia, Chicago, Anaheim, Toronto, Columbus and Montreal. Finally, we share all the opening night line combos we've seen and mine them for hints at fantasy fortunes in the year ahead, zeroing in on a top-line winger in Detroit, a questionable piece in Ottawa's top six, an expected shift in Chicago, a rising youngster in Boston, and a multi-generational combo in Arizona. And still, there's more! The Yakupov trade, how to handle injured players, whether to trade for injured players, RFA situations, last-minute IR stashes, pre-season scoring leaders.. and tons more info that'll give you the early upper-hand in your fantasy pool as we head into the season. Players discussed on this episode include Sidney Crosby, Nail Yakupov, David Perron, Kris Russell, Jonathan Huberdeau, Jonathan Marchessault, Alex Steen, Kevin Shattenkirk, Jussi Jokinen, Michael del Zotto, Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny, Brayden Schenn, Joonas Korpisalo, Sergei Bobrovsky, Marian Gaborik, Nikita Kucherov, Johnny Gaudreau, Hampus Lindholm, Rasmus Ristolainen, Rickard Rakell, Nick Ritchie, Jacob Trouba, Ondrej Pavelec, Connor Hellebuyck, Michael Hutchinson, P.A.  No. 117 - Sold (The KKUPFL Auction Incident) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 04:06:34

On this week's episode Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast, we try something different, giving you a behind the scenes, unedited and uncut look at the Keeping Karlsson Ultimate Patron Fantrax League's Championship Division auction draft. Elan and Brian have a quick chat to open the show about lessons they may or may not have learned from their super competitive auction draft experiences. We then share the live broadcast of the KKUPFL Tier 1 auction draft, hosted by Elan and Jeff Good, which Brian repeatedly tries to join only to have to suddenly leave when players he wants get nominated. We laugh, we cry, we talk about the fantasy value of players as they're drafted, we heap criticism upon Brian's real-time decisions whenever possible. Later this week, keep an eye out for our interview with Peter Harling of Dobber Prospects Radio where we'll offer up some thoughts on which rookies are ready to make a fantasy impact in 2016-17, and then we'll be back with our next episode about all the preseason comings and goings on Monday, October 10.  See the auction draft results at http://www.keepingkarlsson.com/blog, and view the live auction video on our youtube channel at http://www.keepingkarlsson.com/youtube. * * * Download this episode, subscribe, and review us on iTunes!  No. 116 - Fancy Fantasy 2016: Which 'Advanced' Stats Can Help Me Win My Hockey Pool?, plus Not-so-intangibles with Stefan Wolejszo | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:25:24

As called for by annual tradition, it's time for the 2016 edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast's Advanced Stats Primer! 'Which advanced stats are the ones that'll give me a leg up in my pool?' is one of the questions we get most often, and this is the episode where Elan and Brian run down the list of new-ish numbers that they use for their fantasy analysis throughout the year. The guys offer a crash course in finding and understanding rate stats, shooting percentages, IPP, shot attempts for, relative stats, primary assists, and the effects of new coaches, so that you can be a step ahead of your fantasy competition and also keep up with us as we bounce these numbers around through the season. We're also joined by social scientist Stefan Wolejszo, who explains that just because we can't see a quality doesn't mean that it's not there. He describes how often misunderstood character traits-- like resilience and leadership-- really can have measurable effects on hockey players and team dynamics.  No. 114 - Smörgoåliesbord!! 2016 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:33:20

The episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast you've been waiting all summer for: it's Smörgoåliesbord 2016! *kermit-style wildly waving arms and hands motions*   Elan and Brian tell you all about goalie tiering: what it is, why you need to do it for your draft, and what info you should use to guide you in your tiering. Then, they share their own 2016-17 tiers! Can Henrik Lundqvist hang on to his well-worn seat in Tier 1? Just how high will Martin Jones rate on the strength of one fantastic year? Should you draft Murray before Fleury, or the other way around? Does Sergei Bobrovsky hold steady or continue free-falling to lower tiers? Is Steve Mason actually better than Michal Neuvirth? Which as-of-now #1 goalies are ripe for the picking, with quality backups chomping at the bit for more time in the crease? We discuss literally-- literally!-- every goalie that has a chance to see time in an NHL crease this season. Those goalies include: Henrik Lundqvist, Braden Holtby, Martin Jones, Carey Price, Ben Bishop, Pekka Rinne, Jonathan Quick, Tuukka Rask, Roberto Luongo, Corey Crawford, Cory Schneider, Connor Hellebuyck, Sergei Bobrovsky, Peter Mrazek, Steve Mason, Mike Smith, John Gibson, Jake Allen, Frederik Andersen, Craig Anderson, Semyon Varlamov, Devan Dubnyk, Marc-Andre Fleury, Matt Murray, Antti Niemi, Kari Lehtonen, Ryan Miller, Jacob Markstrom, Cam Talbot, Brian Elliott, Robin Lehner, Andrew Hammond, Thomas Greiss, Jaroslav Halak, James Reimer, Cam Ward, Eddie Lack, Joonas Korpisalo, Michal Neuvirth, Ondrej Pavelec, Al Montoya, Carter Hutton, Calvin Pickard, Jhonas Enroth, and many more but I'm going to stop here because I already told you that we talked about every 1st string, 2nd string, and even a bunch of 3rd string goalies who could possibly guard an NHL net this year. Woo! And a special thanks to Ryan Krieg over at PuckTees.org for the super-cool NES Ice Hockey meets World Cup of Hockey shirts we got to wear for this episode! * * * Download this episode, subscribe, and review us on iTunes!  Bonus Episode: What are Goalies?, with Nick Mercadente | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:14

It's another bonus episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast! Are goalies really the Papa Shangos of the NHL? Hockey-graphs contributor and goaltending analyst Nick Mercadante joins Brian for an hour-long chat to try and demystify hockey's masked men. The two of them review the pitfalls of conventional goaltending evaluation, the benefits of Nick's new goalie evaluation metric adjGSAA/60 (aka Mercad/60), goalie ageing curves, and projecting goaltender performance.  They also put several of 2015-16's unexpected goaltending performances under the microscope, looking for clues to see whether collapsed goalies are due to rebound, whether goalies riding high can keep from collapsing, and whether 2016-17's likely crop of first-timer #1 goalies will have what it takes to weather their new workloads. The episode wraps up with some crease-based mythbusting regarding the effects of a strong backup on a #1 goalie, and whether enormous amounts of games played really can help a goalie thrive. Goalies discussed on this episode include Henrik Lundqvist, Roberto Luongo, Jonathan Quick, Sergei Bobrovsky, Connor Hellebuyck, Pekka Rinne, Tuukka Rask, Matt Murray, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brian Elliott, Jake Allen, Frederik Andersen, Steve Mason, John Gibson, Michal Neuvirth, Cam Ward and more. * * * Download this episode, subscribe, and review us on iTunes!  No. 112 - Elite No More? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:08

On last week's edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast, Elan and Brian chatted about players on the verge of becoming must-pick guys in the first couple rounds of your draft. This week, they have a look at the other side of that coin: players who no longer deserve the honour of those early round draft picks. The show kicks off with your fantasy spin on the latest news from around the NHL, including the thrilling conclusion of VeseyWatch and its implications on an oddly deep F corps in New York, a newly acquired top six candidate in Dallas, an under-the-radar backup in Toronto, a new face behind the bench in Colorado, and a new prospect acquired in Arizona whose name definitely rhymes with "house" and not "news." Next, your fearless prognosticators name their candidates for players that inspire skepticism when you see them slated once again to get picked in the early rounds. Elan and Brian dig into a couple of vets reuniting with their first coach, a centreman who saw a change of scenery halfway through last year, another centreman who is watching the scenery change around him, a potentially post-peak goal-scoring winger, and a recently ascended PPQB who was working through injury last year. Players discussed on this episode include Jimmy Vesey, Brandon Pirri, Ryan McDonagh, Jiri Hudler, Jason Spezza, Valeri Nichushkin, Jhonas Enroth, Frederik Andersen, Calvin Pickard, Lawson Crouse, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Henrik Zetterberg, Jonathan Toews and the ghosts of LW past, Marian Hossa, Ryan Johansen, Nick Foligno, Max Pacioretty, Alex Galchenyuk, Nathan Gerbe, Michael Grabner, Matt Niskanen, John Carlson and more. * * * Download this episode, subscribe, and review us on iTunes!
