IT in the D show

IT in the D

Summary: So what do a couple of IT guys from Detroit talk about when they go to the bar? Welcome to the IT in the D show, brought to you by long-time Detroit IT veterans Bob Waltenspiel (The Sales Guy), and Dave Phillips (The Geek). The duo has been putting on free networking events for the metro Detroit information technology community for over 10 years, helped more than 1,200 people find new jobs, and been featured in local and national news stories and publications for their efforts. After taking on speaking engagements starting in 2011 that helped refine their message, in 2013 they took their ramblings to a broadcast format that has proven to be far more popular than anyone expected. The IT in the D show is more conversational and less instructional – it is far more geared toward entertainment and local goings-on in the metro Detroit area than a deep-dive about specific technical issues. It’s a bar chat, not technical seminar. You’ll hear more movie quotes than MySQL queries and more Depeche Mode than development methodologies. Not that the guys don’t roll up their sleeves and deep dive from time to time, but with guests ranging from local CIOs and CEOs to roller derby girls and pop culture icons from the 80s, don’t let the “IT” in “IT in the D” scare you. Each weekly two-hour show typically includes current events and stories, guests ranging from local entrepreneurs to local IT rock stars to people with great local stories to tell, rants, raves and everything you’d expect from a couple of guys who have known each other and been drinking together for nearly two decades.

Episode 130: The Flint Water Crisis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Disclosure: this is not one of our "normal" episodes, but we couldn't possibly be happier...or more proud...of how it all came together and turned out.  The Flint Water Crisis is something that we've all heard about on the news, or read about online, or caught conversations about it at the office...but there's a lot we don't know.  A LOT.  Your most important takeaway?  Get yourself to www.FlintKids.org and donate. More than anything else, last night really hammered home for us exactly how insidious and widespread this problem is.  And how long the problem was silently ignored and brushed under who knows how many rugs and buried in an unknown number of inboxes.  Not to mention the ripple effect that nobody's talking about yet, or how far-reaching these issues are going to remain in people's lives... Our first segment was business as usual...news, events and information that caught our eyes over the past week, but then we dove right into the Flint situation. In fact, things went a little differently than normal tonight.  Instead of our normal four segments, we let the middle two run long and so we've got a three segment show for you to listen to, and it's jammed full of information. But again, your most important takeaway is to get yourself over to http://www.FlintKids.org and donate. A huge thank you to Russ Dotson for helping us pull this episode together, as well as to our other in-studio guests: Kathi Horton, President of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint; Dr Martin Kaufman from the University of Michigan; and lifelong Flint resident Rob Kanous. One more time - http://www.FlintKids.org.  Get there. Well, that went really well.  For episode 127 of our live broadcast of our weekly podcast, we were joined by Ashley Gold...who most of you probably know from the TruTV show "Hardcore Pawn", but as we found out last night along with our live listeners, there's a whole lot more to her than what took place on screen.  From her personal weight loss journey where she's lost over 50 pounds, to breaking away from her family's pawn brokering business and launching her own podcast, blog, and shopping site...and she didn't shy away from diving into our usual mayhem and banter in the least, either...
