IT in the D show

IT in the D

Summary: So what do a couple of IT guys from Detroit talk about when they go to the bar? Welcome to the IT in the D show, brought to you by long-time Detroit IT veterans Bob Waltenspiel (The Sales Guy), and Dave Phillips (The Geek). The duo has been putting on free networking events for the metro Detroit information technology community for over 10 years, helped more than 1,200 people find new jobs, and been featured in local and national news stories and publications for their efforts. After taking on speaking engagements starting in 2011 that helped refine their message, in 2013 they took their ramblings to a broadcast format that has proven to be far more popular than anyone expected. The IT in the D show is more conversational and less instructional – it is far more geared toward entertainment and local goings-on in the metro Detroit area than a deep-dive about specific technical issues. It’s a bar chat, not technical seminar. You’ll hear more movie quotes than MySQL queries and more Depeche Mode than development methodologies. Not that the guys don’t roll up their sleeves and deep dive from time to time, but with guests ranging from local CIOs and CEOs to roller derby girls and pop culture icons from the 80s, don’t let the “IT” in “IT in the D” scare you. Each weekly two-hour show typically includes current events and stories, guests ranging from local entrepreneurs to local IT rock stars to people with great local stories to tell, rants, raves and everything you’d expect from a couple of guys who have known each other and been drinking together for nearly two decades.

Episode 147: Source Point Press, Own The Play, Internet Gambling, Comics Culture and More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Well, a little bit of chaos evolved with our guests over the course of the day, but we prevailed and managed to have a great show with cool, fun guests anyway.  We were joined by Travis from Source Point Press who clued is in to why they're a little different than a lot of other publishers in that space, as well as Matt Chatlin from OwnThePlay.com, and we got a crash course in internet gaming laws and regulations, as well as what they're doing to tweak how fantasy gaming can be played...  Episode 146: “Why I Hate Detroit”, Saga Marketing, Motor City Steam Con, Hodoco and Detroit Manufacturing Capabilities | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Seriously, and I know we've said this before, but how is it that every week's episode is our new favorite episode?  For episode 146 of the IT in the D live podcast broadcast, we were joined by the author of the "Why I Hate Detroit" piece that's been making the rounds and his business partner in Saga Marketing, the organizer of the Motor City Steam Con for steampunk enthusiasts taking place next month, and then return guest Pat Muldoon to talk about his company, HoDoCo, and what they're doing to increase awareness of Detroit's still very much alive manufacturing capabilities and how they're competing on a global scale through technology and working smarter...  Episode 144: Ming Chen, Jimmy McKnight, Randy Walker, Post-Motor City Comic Con Wrap Up, Podcasting 101 and More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Episode 144 was our final episode from our current studio, and we couldn't have asked for a better episode to wrap things up.  We were joined by Ming Chen from AMC's Comic Book Men, Jimmy McKnight from the Ninja Starship Podcast, and Randy Walker from our networking group and twitter stream. And yep, it's true...we're moving...again.  After just a year, we're moving our studio to a new, dedicated building where we'll add more studios, more capacity, and just keep making things suck less bit by bit as we keep rolling...  Episode 143: DPS Teachers, Lea Thompson, John E L Tenney, Jason David Frank, Ming Chen, Jordan Trovillion, Motor City Comic Con Preview | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Sweet mother of God, what a ridiculously packed night we had for episode 143 of our weekly live podcast...probably one of our last ones from the current Podcast Detroit studio as we get ready to expand.  And we had to "expand" a bit last night by running over due to all of the guests and great conversations we had.  From Lea Thompson (Back to the Future, Howard the Duck, Some Kind of Wonderful and more) to John E L Tenney (UFOs, paranormal), Jason David Frank (Power Rangers, MMA), Ming Chen (Comic Book Men), Jordan Trovillion (Comics Continuum), and our in-studio guests, two DPS teachers who are dealing with the chaos going on every day, and had rather unique stories to tell that the media isn't necessarily telling you about... We started off the night just like we did last week, with a call in guest from the upcoming Motor City Comic Con. Lea Thompson called in to talk Back to the Future, Some Kind of Wonderful, Howard the Duck, and all of her other projects...including things she's currently working on and some pretty cool items she's going to have with her at the show this weekend. John E. L Tenney talked about his series about ghosts and the paranormal currently airing, as well as the "Michigan Dog Man" and Nain Rouge. Jason David Frank, who we met a couple of years ago an MCCC, chatted about the upcoming Power Rangers movie, the fan made film, still wanting to get in an MMA ring with CM Punk, and being "spandex ready". We've had a blast getting to know Ming Chen over the past six months, with his "Ming and Mike Show" airing on our Podcast Detroit network, and we're really looking forward to seeing both him and Michael Zapcic this weekend.  You'll be able to hear more from Ming this coming Monday night, as he's staying in town for a couple of days after MCCC to come hit the studio with us for our show. We've run into Jordan Trovillion at nearly every con we've been to recently, even had adjoining tables, and for some reason we still haven't managed to have her on the show.  Well, that changed last night, and we had a great chat with her about Comics Continuum, and all of her other projects in the works that she'll be ready and waiting to talk with you about this weekend. In between all of that, we actually had some serious conversations to get to with our guests Carole and John, both teachers with DPS, who clued us into a whole lot of material that we haven't really been hearing from the local news.  Like what's really at stake from the teachers' point of view, how this is actually impacting the kids, the games being played on a ridiculous scale and how those same kids are caught in the middle of a whole bunch of bureaucratic nonsense and political infighting. Definitely give that a listen.  Episode 142: William Davis (X-Files), OST USA, Local Apparel, Daniel Phillips, Alloy Ash | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 98:58

When the Cigarette Smoking Man from the X-Files says he wants to be on your show, you make room to have him on your show.  Episode 142 of our weekly live podcast broadcast was a little bit disjointed as we made room for several guests from the upcoming Motor City Comic Con in addition to our scheduled guests from OST USA and Local Apparel as actor William B Davis, special effects and makeup artist Daniel Phillips, and Alloy Ash...who's both a model and a welder if you can just let that sink in for a moment.  Plus we talked all of the chaos and mayhem from this past weekend's Penguicon event where, ahem, we won the award for best overall room party... https://youtu.be/F7tIoRNP_dY We didn't really have time to get into a lot of stories, as William B Davis, aka "Cigarette Smoking Man" from the X-Files series was ready and waiting for us right out of the gate.  So we chatted with him a bit about the X-Files (naturally), but also the rest of his career, his autobiography that he'll have with him at the upcoming Motor City Comic Con event, and more. Fascinating conversation, and definitely a really cool way to kick off the show. For the rest of the first segment, we talked Penguicon.  This past weekend was the 14th year of the event, and our 2nd year attending. To say that if you weren't there you really missed out on something awesome really doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. Bob and I participated in a number of panels.  From "The 10 Commandments of Networking" and "10 Commandments of Job Search" that you regular site visitors are likely familiar with to "The Art of Retro Gamers" where we discussed growing up with arcade games and the first consoles, the ever-popular "Flirting for Geeks" panel where we talked how to handle and manage interactions, the "Intro to Podcasting" panel where we talked all things podcasting from recording at home to studios and networks, and then a panel with a whole bunch of other online personalities where we discussed why we do what we do, our favorite and least favorite episodes. And the room parties...oh my, the room parties. Folks, we had dancing dinosaurs in our room.  We had pirates.  We had vampires.  There was a dance-off.  We burned through four kegs, twenty-four bottles of vodka, multiple 30 packs of PBR, a few bottles of Jaeger along the way to winning "best overall room party" with our 80s theme.  Bob kicked out an amazing playlist of tunes, and we did what we do best: get people drinking and having a great time. Huge shout out and thank you to the entire Penguicon staff, roster of volunteers, and of course all of the attendees.  We can't wait for next year's event April 28-30...which oh, you can already register for: https://registration.penguicon.org/ A quick break, and we dove in with OST USA.  Open Systems Technologies is a repeat guest on the show, and is a company offering services ranging from enterprise technology implementations, cloud services, business transformation consulting and much, much more to a wide and varied client base spanning just about any industry you can think of. Listen in, and hear how they just might be able to help you and your company as well. Then Daniel Phillips (no relation) called in.  He's a practical effects make up artist right here locally, and he does some outstanding work.  Some of which you may have seen during the show Face Off, or in the Hobbit films. He's a great guy doing a lot of great work, including training interns to carry on the craft...which is so cool to see in a world where many things are done by computer generated effects.  Check him out at http://dpmakeupstudio.net/ Next up, we chatted with Local Apparel USA. They provide a wide range of clothing featuring the word "loca...

How is it that every week we manage to have our new favorite episode?  Not sure, but not going to question it either.  As we were joined for a spirited, fun and insightful night of conversations with Erika and Elyse from Detroit Labs, Michael from Total Geekdom and his lego computers, and the Organic dating app taking a new approach to the genre, episode 139 of IT in the D was an absolute blast... Have to say, this was one of our favorite episodes in a while.  Three great guests that we could've probably spent an entire episode with each, good conversations on a little current events, some local politics, a few fun events coming up in the area, actually thought provoking topics...really can't ask for much more than that.  But then that's what we should've expected with Andre from HITEC, Dan from Visit Detroit, and Terry, a pro wrestler who's running for office in Dearborn...     The Hispanic IT Executive Council can be found at https://www.facebook.com/hitecglobal/ Visit Detroit can be found at https://www.facebook.com/VisitDetroit/ Terry's "Vote for Rhino" campaign page is at https://www.facebook.com/voteforrhino/ IT in the D On the web: http://www.ITinTheD.com On Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/IT-in-D-91763 On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD On Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ITintheD Podcast Detroit is at: On the web: http://www.podcastdetroit.com/ On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PodcastDetroit On Twitter: https://twitter.com/PodcastDetroit On Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/podcastdetroit FBI cracked iOS without Apple's help: http://secondnexus.com/technology-and-innovation/iphone-code-crack/ Current and former Detroit principals indicted: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/feds-charge-13-current-former-detroit-public-schools-principals-with-bribery-conspiracy Ransomware hitting hospitals: https://threatpost.com/new-server-side-ransomware-hitting-hospitals/117059/ The Diet Dr Pepper twitter handle story: http://www.metrotimes.com/Blogs/archives/2016/03/28/diet-dr-pepper-exchanges-40k-bottles-of-water-for-twitter-handle Windows adding BASH: http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/30/11331014/microsoft-windows-linux-ubuntu-bash How 11 lines of open source code broke the internet: http://qz.com/646467/how-one-programmer-broke-the-internet-by-deleting-a-tiny-piece-of-code/ Mattel lost $3 million to cyber thieves in China: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/mattel-barbie-cyber-thieves-china-1.3513087 We have this: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-JK76PL-Slim-Dash-Button/dp/B013CX3YN6 We don't understand this: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-JK76PL-Trojan-Dash-Button/dp/B013CWNP7W Microsoft will never learn, will they? https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/30/microsoft-racist-sexist-chatbot-twitter-drugs GMail's April Fool's prank: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/apr/01/google-disables-april-fools-joke-gmail-mic-drop Ron Paul wants to be the new Monty Brewster: http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/31/politics/ron-paul-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-2016/index.html More Google Maps mayhem: http://money.cnn.com/2016/03/25/technology/google-maps-house/index.html Batman vs Superman set records...including some not-so-good ones: http://www.forbes.com/sites/robcain/2016/03/28/batman-v-superman-sets-record-with-worst-friday-sunday-drop-for-superhero-pics/ Batman nailed Superman's mom: http://comicbook.com/2016/04/01/batman-slept-with-supermans-mom/ Oculus Rift has some shady terms of use: http://gizmodo.com/there-are-some-super-shady-things-in-oculus-rifts-terms-1768678169 We already knew this: http://www.fastcompany.com/3057502/the-future-of-work/why-tech-professionals-now-share-a-fate-with-the-working-class Amazon's payment partner program: http://techcrunch.
