Legion of Substitute Podcasters

Journey back four years ago, to just after Legion of Three Worlds #5 came out, or, as some have called it “Legion of Three Years”. It was the day before Paul became a dad for the first time, and a couple of weeks before Scott shook off his reservist status, and became a full member of the Subs. Listen to the speculation, with full benefit of hindsight as to what actually happened, and figure out where we were close, and when we were so far off target.

The Subs take a look at Crisis on Infinite Earths #7, and go in deep on all the characters and events, as we say good by to a Legionnaire, and a hero that was always more than just Superman’s cousin.

The Subs are joined by Interlac member Christopher Brown, as they tackle Superboy Starring the Legion of Super Heroes 215. Cosmic Boy gets a new costume (and a bit handsy with Light Lass), Phantom Girl visits home, and Sun Boy hears that clarion call: Turn around, Bright Eyes!

The Subs take a look at the first appearance of Leland McCauley IV, in Superboy Starring THE Legion of Super Heroes, and wonder how the Legion didn’t make just ONE exception to the Legion code against killing…

The Subs make their third attempt at reviewing Superboy Starring THE Legion of Super Heroes #213. This episode has been lost to the time stream twice, so here’s hoping third time is the charm!

After two attempts to record episode 276 were lost in the time stream, the Subs turned to their only hope: The Subs of 2008! The Six Years Ago Subs stepped in with their take on issues 1 and 2 of Legion of 3 Worlds.

The Subs are joined by Legion Omnicom founder Michael Grabois, as they discuss Michael’s first issue, Superboy Starring THE Legion of Super Heroes #212, the issue in which we meet the Legion of Super Rejects (and really, don’t they need a better PR rep). Join in for talk about how 30th Century fashion intersects with what we see on the Skartaris runway, what happened to the missing pages from this issue, and what the second coolest (and coolest) jobs are!

It’s two issues for the price of one! In this episode, the Subs cover Superboy Starring THE Legion of Super Heroes 210 and 211, as the Legion goes up against Soljer, and Roxxas. In other action, we witness the secret origin of Karate Kid, and learn how the Subs (the other Subs, not us) gained possession of Fortress Lad.

Left to their own devices, Darren and Paul once again leap into the anti-matter wave, and bring you another episode of Crisis Counselling. This time, it’s Crisis on Infinite Earths number 6, as we see the universes that would eventually merge to bring us the Post-Crisis DCU, along with the first DCU appearances of many Charlton Action Heroes, and the new Wildcat. The Subs take a look at Superboy Starring THE Legion of Super Heroes 209, where Karate Kid works to save Princess Projectra, as Jim Shooter makes his first return to the Legion. Also, a Legion Super Fan visits the team to become Hero for a Day. In addition to this, some discussion of Justice League 3000, and the the Legion’s recent mention in Superboy.

The Subs take a look at Superboy Starring the Legion of Super Heroes 208, as the Legionnaires face the Legion of Super Villains in their most dastardly plan yet. Also, they explore the history of Jonathan Kent.

In this episode, the Subs bid farewell to one of the Legion’s creators. RIP Al Plastino. Then they take a look at a couple of infamous Legion stories, both from Superboy Starring The Legion of Super Heroes 207. The first concerns the whitewashing of Science Police Officer Dvron, and the second, the complete lack of knowledge of established Legion continuity that is Lightning Lad’s Day of Dread.

It’s a full house at Subs HQ, as the guys take a look at Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes 206, where Superboy is haunted by a couple of familiar faces, and Projectra goes home, and once again nearly gets killed. You’d think she’d learn!
