We begin by remembering Glenn Frey, the guitarist for the Eagles who is remembered for his ballads that are very evocative of another era in American music. We lost Glenn Frey on January 18, 2016. Next we recall the life of David Bowie, who passed away January 10, 2016. David Bowie is remembered for his huge body of work encompassing numerous musical genres. He is also remembered for his theatrics and was the defining styles of the various eras he participated in. Finally, we remember Natalie Cole, daughter of the late Nat King Cole, and a well-known singer in her own right specializing in Rhythm and Blues. She passed away on December 31, 2015. From the beginning of her career in the mid 70s, the number of songs that she produced are still perennial favorites. She is also remembered for her duet with her father, made possible due to the advances in technology. She accompanied her dad in the hit song "Unforgettable".  Heeere's Johnny! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:00

On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we remember "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. He was the undisputed king of late-night TV, and he is very fondly remembered by millions of people. It is impossible to think of the number of individuals who would wind up their day by watching Johnny Carson as a nightly ritual. He started on the Tonight Show after Jack Parr left the show in 1962, and he was on the air for years thereafter until 1992. The first ten years of the show originated in New York, and the final 20 years were from Burbank, California. Many of us remember his final week of shows and the touching tribute by Bette Midler. The range of guests appearing on the Tonight Show during those years ran the gamut from comedians, actors, authors, and political figures. Carson's sidekicks Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen are also well remembered. The banter and humor between them was always funny, and added much to the show. A lot of great memories are sure to be recalled. Our Retro-Commercial is a catchy jingle for the 1970 Chrysler. Live from Beautiful Downtown Burbank, it's Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site on the Galaxy Nostalgia Network!

Golden Age of Cartoons | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:55

On this episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, we look back to the iconic cartoons of the 1950s and 60s. Such well-remembered characters as Woody Woodpecker, Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Chilly Willy, and Heckyll and Jekyll, just to name a few. We recall many of these cartoons as fodder for our Saturday morning TV watching, but some of them had antecedents prior to the Second World War. They evolved during the war to help sell war bonds and keep morale up. During the cold war, they continued to entertain and in so doing went from adult-level humor to humor that kids could understand. All in all a fun look back at these iconic cartoons. Next, George Haloulakos tell us about his latest book titled: "Call to Glory - How the Convair B-58 Hustler helped win the Cold War". This book, written for a general audience, is an oral history of the 1960s through the prism of this renowned aircraft.  Top 40 Radio Author Returns to Galaxy Moonbeam Nightsite | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:50

Mike and Smitty welcome their good friend Dave Leonard back to the Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site microphones. Dave is author of "Aircheck, The Story of Top 40 Radio in San Diego". On this episode, we first look back, or rather listen back to some early radio jingles, from the 50s and 60s. These identifiers, used by stations around the country, helped to give a radio station its personality and help identify it from others that might be running a similar format. As the competition tightened in radio after the beginning of the TV era, radio stations found themselves in need of standing out from other local stations. Jingles helped out in this process and are well remembered to this day. As time went on, they got shorter and shorter until virtually disappearing, and we have examples of several from the San Diego market back in the day. On the second half of our show, we look back at some of the gimmicks that were used by your favorite DJs of the past, in order to help establish their on-air personalities. Such things as catchy names, outfits or costumes, sound effects, fictional characters, and many others were employed by air personalities in an effort to distinguish themselves from other talent and often these examples of shtick are why we remember someone from long ago who was once on the air. Our Retro-Commercial is a catchy musical number for 7-UP soda from the 1950s. Listen in and recall those great days of Top 40 Radio on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, on the Galaxy Nostalgia Network!

The 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:04:40

We look back to the 70th anniversary of the conclusion of the Second World War on the episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site. Victory at the end of the war came at a monumental cost in lives and in destruction. 1945 was the pivotal year which saw the Allies' finals triumph over the tyranny of the Nazis in Europe and the Japanese in the Pacific. We look back at the first half of 1945 detailing notable events that led to the end of the war. We listen to radio broadcasts announcing Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration and hear an excerpt of the surrender broadcast from Tokyo Bay, in which General Douglas McArthur received the surrender of the Japanese high command. Additionally, we look at the aftermath of the war, when our veterans came home and enrolled in college classes via the GI Bill, and opened businesses and stores with the skills they learned during their time in the armed forces. They also married and began families, beginning the baby boomer years of mid-20th century America. We remember our veterans who served proudly and came home, and we also salute those who did not come home and gave their ultimate sacrifice for liberty far away from our shores. They are all heroes to whom we owe a tremendous debt of respect and gratitude. Join us on this commemorative look back at the end of World War II here on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, on the Galaxy Nostalgia Network.
