As Paul closes his letter to Titus (and the churches in Crete), he sums up his teachings, warns them of dangers, and sets the stage for future ministry. How are these same things important for us today as we seek to “reflect the Lord Jesus to a needy world?”
In Titus 3, Paul reminds Titus (and the churches in Crete) of what God has done for them and how to live as Christ’s ambassadors. And, the things Paul imparts to Titus are applicable to us in contemporary Western culture today. As Titus was instructed, so are we by these Words of God…
Paul moves from behaviors of various groups and of Titus himself to the foundational belief that motivates all of the Christian community’s actions… in a word — grace. Titus 2:11-15 is one of two seminal doctrinal passages within Paul’s letter to Titus.
Paul moves from an analysis of the culture of and around the early Cretan churches to the groups that they contain. Our readings in Titus 2:1-10 encourage us to see our place in the grand illustration of God’s “grace work” both between believers and extended to those “still on the way.”
We’re continuing in our Titus studies [1:10-16] by looking at Paul’s fascinating analysis of the church and cultural context for Titus’ work. Our devotional suggestions will encourage you to think about Paul’s observations and make similar ones regarding the status of Christianity and American culture in our own age.
We will study Titus 1:5-9 and ask three operating questions: 1.) What does Biblical church leadership look like? 2.) What does GBC’s church leadership look like? 3.) What role do I play?
Paul sent Titus to Crete as his representative; in many ways Cretan culture anticipates all the dysfunction of contemporary Western culture... It was sensual, selfish, and “truth-deprived”... Paul’s introduction states that Titus (and we!) are not alone amid the darkness of our world/age.
Our speaker today, Jephthe Lucien, is the lead pastor of the Jerusalem Baptist Ministries in Pignon, Haiti. His sermon, “Who Is This?” is from Mark 4:35-41.
Christians are united by the gifts given to us of a called, a conferred, and a connected life. We, in turn, should “give back” our spiritual gifts to help others do God’s work better.
God tells us to test Him on this: if we give back to Him what He has already given to us He will give us blessings that are too numerous to count! This week we will look at the joy and the blessings that are a result of giving.
Our God is a giving God and His giving is called “grace”. Our giving is an expression of God’s grace in our lives.
