Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips on Swoop’s World Primetime | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:16

On Thursday November 8, 2012 at 11am/PST (2pm/EST) we welcome Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips, the co-founders of Animal Defenders International (ADI) to Swoop’s World Primetime. Jan and Tim are two fearless, compassionate individuals who fight for those who cannot fight for themselves: the abused and neglected animals of the world. The renowned group stops animal abuse, rescues animals in distress, and secures legislation that protects animals from harm in laboratories, farms, and the entertainment industry.  They use false identities, hidden cameras, elaborate cover stories, and covert surveillance techniques to capture footage in circuses, slaughterhouses, and laboratories. Swoop’s World Primetime is live on Thursdays at 11am/PST (2pm/EST) Tune in each week at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show Jan Creamer Jan Creamer is the President and co-founder of Animal Defenders International (ADI), a world-renowned group committed to animal protection across the globe. Along with her husband Tim Phillips, Creamer has built a reputation for getting the job done; the team not only investigates animal cruelty, but also secures legislation to stop the harm and bring abusers to justice. Creamer’s dedication to making a change sparked in the mid-1970s, when she saw a leaflet in the street about beagles being forced to smoke cigarettes in experiments. The leaflet called for action and Creamer responded, volunteering for the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS). Within years she left her graphic design job to become a full-time magazine editor for NAVS, their photographer, public speaker and later their Chief Executive. While working on animal protection campaigns, Creamer met her husband and future ADI Vice President Tim Phillips. In 1990 they founded ADI and have expanded the group’s presence worldwide, with offices in London, Los Angeles, and Bogota. The approach of Creamer and Phillips was recently highlighted in South America, where they embedded an undercover team for two years inside the circus industry. The findings shocked a continent and a huge public awareness drive by Creamer and Phillips secured legislation to ban the use of animals in circuses in Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay and Ecuador, with legislation proposed in others.  Creamer and Phillips then returned to Bolivia to assist the authorities in tracking down circuses defying the law, and in what became known as Operation Lion Ark raided and rescued every animal – closing eight circuses.  The operation culminated in airlifting 29 lions to freedom in the USA (25 in one flight to Colorado and four to California).  Now, “Lion Ark” the movie captures the behind-the-scenes plight of the animal rescue, the heartache, and their joyful flight to freedom. Creamer firmly believes that evidence is the key to change. She leads her team from the front, presenting evidence to governments all over the world, appearing in the media, and organizing public outreach campaigns. Creamer also works undercover to capture the appalling treatment of animals on film. She creates false identities and elaborate cover stories to infiltrate animal trafficking operations, fur farms, and circuses. She even tricked her way into a laboratory dealer and left with a group of beagles that were headed for experimentation. Phillips and Creamer often head into harm’s way to collect evidence, and death threats and violent attacks from drug dealers and gunrunners do not deter these two heroes from fighting for animal rights. Creamer and ADI have succeeded in rescuing and protecting animals worldwide: Prohibited the use of chimpanzees and wild monkeys in experiments in Europe Secured bans on animal circuses in 20 countries Ended cosmetics testing on animals throughout Europe Provided evidence for the prosecution of Hollywood animal trainer Mary Chipperfield, the owners of Bobby Roberts Circus, and employees of Have Trunk Will Travel,

Thomas Smith & Darrell Williams on Swoop’s World Late Night | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:17:44

On Wednesday November 7, 2012 at 8pm/PST (11pm/EST) we welcome Thomas Smith & Darrell Williams, author and subject of the newly released book Which One Am I?.  Join us as we sit down with these two interesting friends of ours and learn about the road traveled to get to where they are today. Darrell's unique story needed to be told and only someone as close to him as Tom could have written it in the proper perspective. This is sure to be a powerful interview about a life of discovery, disappointment, love and acceptance. How does one deal with being the outsider, living a life with many questions and few answers? Can a person know the intimate details of family incidents that occurred prior to their birth? You'll want to tune in and hear Darrell's remarkable story, we're sure you'll be captivated.  After our interview we’ll be up to all of our usual fun with our Brewskis beer tasting segment, beer trivia, TBones Timeout, pigskin picks, followed by our take on all topics, as well as any interesting news of the day. Swoop’s World Late Night is on from 8pm/PST – 11pm/PST tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show Which One Am I? There are at least 16 personalities inside James Darrell Williams. But who is he really? And why? “Which One Am I?” is a singular story about universal truths, horrors and grace. Setting their work apart from other memoirs, the authors explore the nature of family and how Darrell – and all of us -- are shaped by culture, history and geography. After two years of research, Darrell and his partner Thomas Smith dug deeply into family secrets, Southern culture and Darrell’s own psyche to explore portrayals of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in popular culture and the psychiatric community, linking them with the events that made Darrell the man he is. Forward This isn’t the way Darrell’s story was supposed to unfold. But you could say that just about anybody’s life. At its core, this is the chronicle of the life of James Darrell Williams. This is how he has grown up with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a disorder being by definition “An ailment that affects the function of mind or body.” More importantly, this story is of how and why he developed what neither of us particularly considers an “ailment” and how he came to become the man he is today. Initially, Darrell and I were attempting to explain Darrell to himself. We needed to explore how Darrell came to have these multiple personalities, these people inside him that exist and live along with him. Along the way, the story became something quite different and not at all what we expected. The “why” of it all tended to be buried in layers of psychology, sociology, history, geography and family secrets that no one wanted to tell. Explaining what happened became much more complicated. History is told by its survivors: Roald Amundsen’s South Pole expedition, the Donner Party, Billy Milligan. They leave historians with nothing more than scribbled notes, selective memory and inadvertent admissions. To recreate what really happened requires deductive reasoning, a fair number of educated guesses and the ability to listen between the lines. History is something people only half remember. We always knew telling Darrell’s story was going to be somewhat difficult. To live, survive and ultimately thrive with DID is to live life out of time. Each day is a movie constructed from previews and outtakes with reels all out of order. We wanted to splice the pieces together, fill in the gaps and make sense of it all. That was my job. Trained as a journalist, I was privy to contacts and resources that Darrell had never heard of. I wanted to tell how his experience was effected by his particular geography, sociology and setting. Darrell and the “kids” – his term for the people who live inside him -- just wanted their story told – and told right. There are big kids and little kids, all of them shadows behind Darrell’s hazel eyes.

Where she kept little journals wherein she would scribble pages and pages of indecipherable writing (to the untrained eye that is) and she would read them to her family with great passion and drama. Her creativity was apparent even at that early age. At the age of eleven, her 5th grade teacher, Mr. Abadie took notice of her writing skills. He submitted one of her children's stories to a Writer's Guild contest which she won. She had written her first award winning African Folktale. Ameerah was now officially an author. This opportunity also afforded her to serve as background vocals on a children's album, "Everyone Can Be In the Band", by Alan Spector. While pursuing degrees in psychology and business she also enjoyed the exciting world of fashion and modeling. Down deep she always knew that she would someday be able to affect the lives of others in a meaningful manner. Her desire was to be able to be a positive role model for young women; To be able to inspire, mentor and motivate others as she had been mentored by some very powerful women through the years. After college, she began her teaching career in the public school system as well as the community at large. She took a sabbatical to write a book and entered the world of business and rejoined her parents in their family's virtual college bookstore. Her entrepreneurial spirit emerged and she launched her own business, which enabled her to impact the lives of many people. Join us at 11 am/PST!  Joan Benedict Steiger on Swoop’s World Late NIght | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:06:44

On Wednesday October 3, 2012 at 8pm/PST (11pm/EST) we welcome veteran actress of television, film, and stage, Joan Benedict Steiger to Swoop’s World. Joan has enjoyed, and continues to live a remarkable life. She's been performing since the age of seven, and her many parts have included appearances on many acclaimed stage productions and television shows. In an industry that often strains relationships, Joan speaks fondly of her three long-term relationships, to what she describes as “three of the greatest guys in the world.” (Actors Rod Steiger, John Myhers, and Jeremy Slate). Join us as we have this wonderful opportunity to learn about the wonderful career and life of Joan Benedict Steiger, what keeps her going, and what she's currently involved with. After our interview we’ll be up to all of our usual fun with our Brewskis beer tasting segment, TBones Timeout, followed by our take on all topics, as well as any interesting news of the day. Swoop’s World Late Night is on from 8pm/PST – 11pm/PST tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show Joan Benedict Steiger Decades of work on stage, screen, and television and the love of three devoted men sounds like a full life; but in many ways, the story is just beginning for veteran performer Joan Benedict Steiger. With credits dating back to the original “Candid Camera” on television to her acclaimed solo performance as Leona Helmsley, she has lived the artistic life she first dreamed of as a child in Brooklyn, New York – and the dream shows no signs of ending. “I always thought when I was little I would be a dancer,” Joan recalls today. “I was never really built for ballet, but I was tap dancing in public at age seven when I performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. I remember the first film I ever saw was with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and as I was leaving the theatre, I wanted to run back in, I knew I had to be a part of that world.” Her list of stage credits include acclaimed productions of contemporary offerings such as “Promises, Promises,” “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” “Collected Stories” by Donald Margulies, P.J. Barry’s “The Octette Bridge Club,” Horton Foote’s “The Traveling Lady,” and Morris West’s “The World is Made of Glass;” opposite Don Knotts in the comedy “The Mind with the Dirty Man;” classics like “Richard III,” “The Dyubbuk,” and “Dr. Faustus;” and her two solo shows, “Leona” (about notorious “Queen of Mean” Leona Helmsley) and the recent “The Loves of My Life,” based on her own life. On screen, she also co-starred with Knotts and Tim Conway in the comedy “The Prizefighter.” Indeed, perhaps Joan Benedict Steiger’s career is all the more remarkable for having endured through three long-term relationships, to what she describes as “three of the greatest guys in the world.” While marriages between professional actors are often fraught with jealousy and competition, Joan has found lightning in a bottle all three times. “Both of my husbands, and my lifetime partner Jeremy, were wonderful men who respected me as an actress,” she recalls. “They all died from different forms of cancer, so my memories are sometimes bittersweet, but with no regrets.” Throughout her life, Joan Benedict Steiger has worked simultaneously on stage, in film, and on television. She’s still remembered for a classic bit from the original version of “Candid Camera,” where she played a lost tourist looking for directions from passersby, making sure that her fancy hat – beplumed with a particularly large feather – would distract them at every opportunity. She was also part of the ensemble of the original “Steve Allen Show,” where she did double duty as the spokesperson for Hazel Bishop cosmetics. On daytime drama, she had regular and recurring roles on “General Hospital,” “Days of our Lives,” and “Capitol.” Her dozens of series guest appearances include classic series like “Fantasy Island,” “T.J. Hooker,” “The Incredible Hulk” and, most recently, Fox’s “Dollhouse.
