"I thought I’d take the opportunity to make something a bit out of the ordinary from what you would normally expect from me. Since New Years, the 26 year old Norwegian producer has already laid down an epic guest mix on Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Radio, dropped two of his biggest releases yet on Pryda Friends, and completed his first North American tour which saw stops in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and Ottawa among others. We’ve been eager to chat with Fehrplay since his Circus debut this February, where we learned that beyond his studio genius, the Pryda Friend is also a master selector who curates emotional mixes that can cross the spectrum from deep house and techno to hands-in-the-air progressive house with flawless precision. Like many of his Canadian counterparts, Derek Silvester was producing hip hop before falling in love with dance music. “I ended up working abroad and meeting a lot of people from all over the world. I was DJ’ing parties for the staff, and the only thing that worked was the electronic stuff, so I fell in love with it from there” says the 28 year old DJ/producer from his home in Halifax. The artist known professionally as Dezza has seen his music played out on some of the world’s biggest radio shows in the past month, including Tiesto’s Clublife, Armin’s ASOT, Sander’s Identity, and Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy radio. With a stacked release schedule and a sound that fits perfectly into today’s festival culture, we decided to grab a guest mix and interview from the East coast native before he blows up this summer. Though the average fan might not know it, Windsor has always been known as a hotbed for dance music talent. You don’t have to look far for inspiration when in Windsor, whether talking about the home to some of the world’s most influential early electronic labels, like Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s Plus 8 Records, and later Hawtin’s own label M-nus (minus), or the birthplace of techno only 15 minutes away in Detroit. The city has a rich cultural and musical history that continues to churn out top-tier talent, and one of the latest manifestations of this phenomenon lands in our April edition as our cover mix artist of the month. Sultan and Ned Shepard are two of the brightest dance music stars coming out of Canada. With a legitimate recording history that stretches across a decade of polished original productions, remixes and collaborations, their progressive house style is currently sitting firmly atop the industry. In the past year, Sultan and Ned have taken their game to the next level, releasing tracks on Tiesto’s Musical Freedom, Dutch powerhouse Spinnin Records, and NYC-based Strictly Rhythm, in addition to consistent output on their own label Harem Records, which recently released a sure-fire summer festival anthem called Avon, by fellow Montreal producers Paris & Simo. With the house room of this year’s Bal en Blanc walking the line between big progressive house DJ’s like Calvin Harris and David Guetta, and underground techno masters like Dubfire and Nicole Moudaber, Sultan and Ned Shepard were an obvious choice to include in this lineup due to their versatile DJ skills, epic productions and a massive hometown fan base. This month we head to the West coast and land in Calgary, Alberta where a young producer has caught the attention of some of the biggest names in the worldwide tech-house scene. Simon Doty has been signed to John Acquaviva’s legendary Definitive label, and has been absolutely tearing it up with his recent releases.
