Probably like most of you...one of them old tunes thats been in memory with out remembering where you first heard it. Heres a take of this melody straight from the mind without influence..clawhammer pickn.
Played on an "Frankenstein" banjo put together from "no name" cast off parts. A 1960's neck attached to much older spun over 10 5/8" pot with original calf skin head.
Played on my Sagmoen 10 7/8" pot , 24 3/4" scale with and Ashborn rim with a Dobson tone ring, a Renaissance head, Fielding tailpiece and GHS PF150 steel strings in double C tuning.
From Marcus Martin. Banjo tuned aEAC#E.
For the old-time Tune of the Week, Happy Hollow is one of North Carolina fiddler Marcus Martin's tunes. I decided to play it on the cello banjo, so the key comes out lower than the original (and slower!). Don't you think it's a happy tune?
A multitrack version I recorded with fiddle (Liu Xi workshop, ADAE), clawhammer banjo (Enoch 12" Tradesman with Rickard Dobson ring), guitar, bass. I am unable to find much information about this particular tune, other than this link to its being played: youtube.com/watch?v=qQrGJMvqCGQ I can find very little about this tune; if anyone has more information about it, please let me know. It's a tune that a number of us in the Crooked Lake Fiddle Club (Keuka Lake, New York) played often and regularly a few years ago. Unfortunately, so many members of the group have passed away in the past 4-5 years that the group has disbanded; very sad to lose the friendship and musicianship of so many of what was once a fun jam and performance group. The tune is very simple but catchy and fun to play.
We had a fun jam with Dan Levenson this past weekend, here in Colorado. Sarah Armstrong's Tune got plenty of play time, and I got motivated to learn it rather than always faking it. Really fun to play this one on the banjo. My rendition is roughly based on playing along with the Red Mountain White Trash on the "Chickens Don't Roost Too High" album. Banjo tuned aDADE.
One of Woodie Guthrie's wonderful children's songs. Played in double-C on a Goodtime Parlor, in the garage, in the middle of the night during a bout of insomnia.
I worked this up today for this weeks Old Time Tune of the Week. This comes form Pikeville, Kentucky fiddler Owne "Snake" Chapman. I am picking three finger style on my 1928 semi-fretless Vega Tubaphone, tuned in open D (aDF#AD). That's a MIDI practice track of my own making playing in the background.
For the old-time Tune of the Week, 4/13/18, Snake wrote this tune during a recording session and it was was recorded and kept for posterity with this title that was reminiscent of his experience as a child of being knocked down by an angry hornet.
Played on my Sagmoen 10 7/8" pot , 24 3/4" scale with and Ashborn rim with a Dobson tone ring, a Renaissance head, Fielding tailpiece and GHS PF150 steel strings in double C tuning.
A multitrack recording of my slow and simple version of this Lynn Morris tune, where I'm playing clawhammer banjo (Enoch 12" Tradesman with Rickard Dobson tone ring, Double D), fiddle (low G tuned up to A), guitar (Martin HD-28), and bass. This version is more Old Time. As is always the case, better headphones/earbuds/speakers will do a better job of picking up the bass.
Here's a great tune by Melvin Wine. All Young
played in G on new 11" open back crafted by me
Recorded at our local, old time only jam held once a month and the Occidental Hotel in Buffalo, Wy
