Lightning Talk—Facing the Sea: Automated Assessment of Massachusetts's Coastal Protection Structures (3071) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 00:05:43

Massachusetts ocean-facing shoreline contains thousands of coastal protection structures. Because many were built prior to modern policies and regulations no comprehensive database of structures and their elevations exists. Such a database would provide fundamental information for coastal management and is useful to assess resilience to coastal flooding or sea level rise. Completing a survey of each structure would be prohibitively expensive and time consuming. Conversely, an offset between the digitized structures and recent LiDAR data precludes a simple extraction of elevations from the LiDAR DEM. To account for misalignment between the LiDAR DEM and the digitized structures as well as variability in elevations along a single structure, a custom Python script was developed to cast profile lines perpendicular to each structure and analyze each profile to estimate the exact location of the structure in the DEM and extract the appropriate elevation. The database of elevations was then compared with future sea level rise scenarios to provide a general assessment of the state's resiliency to coastal flooding.

Lightning Talk—Toolbox for the Ocean Health Index and Cumulative Impacts (3072) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 00:06:51

Managing sustainable use of the oceans necessitates quantifying the diverse array of benefits to humans as well as anthropogenic pressures and resilience measures impacting ecosystems. Cumulative Impacts (Halpern et al., 2008; nceas.ucsb.edu/globalmarine) and the Ocean Health Index (Halpern et al., 2012; oceanhealthindex.org) provide frameworks to address these complex tasks. We briefly review these frameworks and dive into a new toolbox for applying similar analysis to your region and/or sector of interest. This new toolbox allows for modification of regions, data layers, model equations and other parameters. Three separate interfaces allow for varying levels of automation and use cases: 1) an application for calculating indices, navigating the many connected elements and generating reports with visualizations; 2) a set of form-based tools for use in a scientific GIS workflow (ArcGIS or open-source Kepler); and 3) programming interfaces for full automation (R, Python).

Lightning Talk—Common Operating Picture Utilizing ArcGIS Online as the Platform (3073) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 00:06:38

Incident response in regards to responding to incidents offshore or remote locations demands a tactical view of the operation. For daily operations and emergency response (ER) incidents, video and telemetry data capture is a key aspect in assessing the operation or event. The operational and ER teams are responsible to select and distribute selected information to other parties through a controlled release. The sites may include offshore platforms, drill ships, remotely operated vehicles (ROV), docks, support vessels, and onshore field sites. Current information/data/video is gathered and transmitted via satellite systems or provided land-based Internet circuits. Operational focus on "how" the data integrations should be accomplished and ensuring that companies are staying away from 'closed' systems is critical to a successful COP. A large number of the platforms available recently (i.e., weather, asset tracking, telemetry, spill extent) have all predicated that the user utilize their specific interface or middle tier UI. This can cause compatibility issues with an incident host company's systems and can preclude third-party providers access or compatible access to share data. The recommended proper approach is making sure that all of the providers of any particular dataset make their information available via an open-standard model, albeit one that can support security requirements and compatibility. This isn't a requirement to provide free data but it is a requirement to ensure that as data is ejected, injected, processed, etc., that it meets a common language requirement, (i.e., just like in Aviation English is the requirement worldwide). Oceaneering is utilizing ArcGIS Online to design and operate the COP as this platform allows for quick visualization and representation of the field of operations. Platforms such as this allow for quick deployment of the various GIS feature sets and data visualization requirements.

Lightning Talk—Uncovering the Oceans through Seascape Visualisation (3060) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 00:06:40

More often than not, geographic representation of the marine environment strips the ecosystem of its habitat richness, biodiversity and verticality. Mapping the marine environment in GIS results in marine features represented as a 2D plane on the sea surface or as bare bathymetry. These are geographically accurate, but not visually pleasing nor comprehensive in representing marine ecosystems. In contrast, gaming and virtual reality programs produce attractive visuals but are not geographically referenced. This talk presents the integration of GIS geographic referencing with landscape visualisation principles and software to develop geographically accurate and visually attractive models of the marine environment. A seascape visualisaton model of an offshore protected seamount was presented to marine protected area (MPA) planners and scientists for feedback. Based on results, further work is currently under way to improve the model for MPA planners, scientists, users and visitors.

 Lightning Talk—Supporting Offshore Energy and Marine Planning with MarineCadastre.gov (3062) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 00:04:13

MarineCadastre.gov is an integrated marine information system that provides ocean data, offshore planning tools, and technical support to the offshore energy and marine planning communities. The project was designed specifically to support renewable energy siting on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf but is being used for a wide array of ocean-related activities. The project delivers its content through map viewers and a spatial data registry, and provides analytical tools to the ocean planning community. MarineCadastre.gov has recently undergone several updates to support the growing need for web services, maps on the fly, and focused web and story maps. This Lightning Talk will highlight some of the new features being developed and demonstrate how the various components of the project are being used by ocean professionals.
