In this week’s “Inside Athletics,” Dave and James talk about the transition time as the spring sports move from non-conference to conference games.  They talk about teams needing to play within their capabilities, and also cover the great weekend for the track and golf teams. Inside Athletics is a weekly podcast hosted by Director of Athletics, Dave King. The podcast offers a synopsis of what is happening in EMU athletics, but also delves deeper into how athletics at EMU shapes lives and enhances college educations by positively impacting an athlete’s understanding of self, others, and God. Sports Information Director James De Boer is a regular guest with EMU coaches and athletes making appearances as well.

Najeeba Syeed Miller, professor of inter-religious education at Claremont School of Theology and Director of the Center for Global Peacebuilding, speaks on, “Prophetic Peacebuilding: Abrahamic Visions for Peace.” A practitioner and educator in conflict resolution among communities of ethnic and religious diversity, her involvements include conducting gang interventions, implementing diversity training in universities and public agencies, conflict resolution in public schools, and environmental conflict resolution. She has published on developing mediation programs and community/police relations, intersections of religious family law and US courts, an Islamic perspective on just peacemaking and interfaith relations. Currently she is working on a book project which explores the role of Prophet Muhammad as a peacemaker and institutionalizing interfaith education. Her expertise in conflict resolution has led her to train mediators working closely with conflict in India, Latin America, Guam, Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine. Her research and community activist efforts have focused on the role of women as agents of peacemaking. A sought after speaker and resource person, Syeed Miller holds a BS degree from Guilford College and a J.D. from Indiana University School of Law. Clayton Payne, EMS student and pastor of Monterey United Methodist Church, leads and preaches in this Chapel Gathering in the Seminary. This week’s Inside Athletics podcast focuses on the baseball team as Dave’s guest is new head coach, Ben Spotts.  After a good start during the non-conference portion, Ben evaluates the progress being made by the team.  He highlights the areas of improvement and shares his strategy for improving the baseball program.  He also looks ahead to the  conference competition that will be the bulk of the schedule the rest of the way.  Dave takes time to introduce the plans for renovations of the baseball facilities with drawings unveiled in about 4-6 weeks and the plans for fundraising and construction. Jesus pursues people into the “far countries” of human existence, blazing a trail for us and making it possible for us to minister and serve in Christ’s name even in the most challenging circumstances. Joni Sancken shares a message based on Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32. Dr. Joni Sancken serves as assistant professor of preaching at Eastern Mennonite Seminary. Sancken grew up at First Mennonite Church in Urbana, IL. She graduated with a Ph.D.in Homiletics from the Toronto School of Theology in 2009, earned an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary (2004), and a B.A. from Goshen College (1998). Dr. Sancken completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Practical Theology and Religious Practices at Emory University in May 2010 and has recently been appointed Director of Eastern Mennonite Seminary’s Preaching Institute, which is committed to finding ways to support and enhance preaching in congregations through consultation, courses, workshops and other events.

“My Road to Decision” features an impersonation of Menno Simons which describes his eleven-year journey to his decision to leave the Roman Catholic priesthood and the consequences of that decision. Dr. Gerald Brunk, EMU professor emeritus, brings his impersonation of Menno Simons back to chapel. The first time he did this impersonation in chapel was 1986 with no props or costume to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Menno Simons leaving the Roman Catholic priesthood and helping to further the Anabaptist movement.
