Does a day go by without some thought or conversation about money? The economic climate? The lack of funds for a congregational program or project? The juggling act with personal bills? The search for wisdom about how to be good stewards of what we do have? Walter Brueggemann offers the first of three plenary address for the 2012 School for Leadership Training.  Brueggemann uses Pharaoh as a model and metaphor for the drive to accumulate. It is a drive borne in anxiety that issues in the destruction of the neighborhood and the normalization of violence in society. The 2012 theme for School for Leadership Training seeks to engage church and business leaders in an exploration of such questions and to plumb the wisdom of those living with possible answers. This school intentionally invites us to look deeply at how our handling of money flows out of or impacts our faith.  Walter Brueggemann’s evening keynote addresses give us scriptural footing for our explorations. This event is co-sponsored by Eastern Mennonite Seminary, EMU’s department of business and economics, and Everence.

What do you do when your dreams seem just out of reach? Sometimes the first step towards reaching our goal is the hardest; but when we reconcile our past fears and put our hope in Christ, our dreams will become reality. Glen Guyton preaches from John 5:1-13 in a special Monday chapel for MLK Jr. day of remembrance. Guyton serves Mennonite Church USA as Director for Constituent Resources. The MLK Jr. chapel is co-sponsored by Multicultural Services and Campus Ministries.

In this Chapel Gathering service  in the Seminary, Dr. Jerry Holsopple  reflects on Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the context of his sabbatical year spent in Lithuania.  Dr. Holsopple is Professor of Visual and Communication Arts at EMU. Chapel Gathering services held in Martin Chapel at Eastern Mennonite Seminary are planned by the Seminary community but open to all.

Renowned storyteller, activist, organizer, writer, Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, is one of the first ten women in Jewish history to enter Rabbinic life and, in 1980, became the first woman ordained in the Jewish Renewal Movement. In 1973 she began congregational life with Temple Beth Or of the Deaf and then lived for 22 years in NM where she co-founded Congregation Nahalat Shalom, The Muslim Jewish Peacewalk for Interfaith Solidarity and Shomer Shalom Network for Jewish Nonviolence. She moved to California in 2005 to direct Interfaith Inventions Wilderness Peace Camp, and AFSC’s Israel Palestine program with Noura Khouri. Rabbi Lynn serves on the advisory and rabbinic council of Jewish Voice for Peace and leads delegations to Israel, Palestine, and Iran with the Fellowship of Reconciliation. She cofounded The Community of Living Traditions with Rick, Kitty and Rabia in the spring of 2009 in an effort to bring the work of creating a multifaith, multicultural and multigenerational environment for activists committed to strategic nonviolence to build upon their work. She moved to Stony Point in November 2009 in order to set up The Shomer Shalom House and work on CLT programming. She is author of She Who Dwells Within: A Feminist Vision of a Renewed Judaism, and Trail Guide to The Torah of Nonviolence, coming out in 2012. She co-founded JSNAP: Jewish Solidarity with Native American Peoples in the winter of 2011 and continues to write and organize around Jewish nonviolence, prevention of violence toward women, anti-racism work, living wage movement, ending occupation and promoting multi-faith understanding.

President Loren Swartzendruber speaks on peacebuilding, one of the EMU shared values, for the opening convocation of spring semester. Chapel closes with a time of sending for the Guatemala & Mexico Cross-cultural Seminar group at the end of convocation.
