Luke Hartman ’91, Vice President for Enrollment, opens Black History Month with the first of two chapels planned by the Black Student Union.   He shares stories to honor his own past and reflects on why it is important to do so.

Dr. Anil Solanki, EMS Adjunct Professor of Old Testament and Minister in the United Church of Christ, preaches from  Luke 1:46-55, the Magnificat.

Booths with representatives from a wide range of camps surround the chapel gathering in the unique venue of the Campus Center Greeting Hall.  Glenn Nofziger II shares a message about identity in Christ, reflecting on his experiences at camp, college, and in short-term missions/evangelism.  Glenn, EMU class of ’02,  is an Eastern Mennonite Seminary student who served on staff at Little Eden, a camp on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Consider a biblical perspective on freedom as Joanne Gallardo preaches on John 8:31-36.

In this week’s “Inside Athletics” Dave and James jump into a recap of the past few days.  Dave also opens the door for James to explain what a basketball game day looks like for him. Inside Athletics is a weekly podcast hosted by Director of Athletics, Dave King. The podcast offers a synopsis of what is happening in EMU athletics, but also delves deeper into how athletics at EMU shapes lives and enhances college educations by positively impacting an athlete’s understanding of self, others, and God. Sports Information Director James De Boer is a regular guest with EMU coaches and athletes making appearances as well.

Cyndi Gusler, associate professor of Visual and Communication Arts, presents at the January Colloquium lecture.  She shares from  her sabbatical work focusing on using discarded and eco-friendly materials to create art.  The lecture and Q&A time are followed by the opening of her show “Disintegration” in the Margaret Martin Gehman Gallery . Brendon Derstine and Julia Schmidt offer reflections from their participation in the Ministry Inquiry Program, Summer 2011. The Ministry Inquiry Program is an exciting opportunity of the Mennonite Church USA for college-age young adults to explore pastoral ministry. The program offers you the opportunity to experience first hand what ministry is and to test your own gifts and sense of call. Participants work under the supervision of a pastor and are involved in many aspects of a minister’s life and work. Effort is made to place you in the congregation or congregational setting of your choice—urban, rural, large, or small. For students of mission, an overseas assignment can be considered. The Ministry Inquiry Program also offers pastors and congregations a specific way to be involved in helping students experience leadership in the church. Pastors serve as mentors and examples. Students learn by both observing and doing. At the conclusion of the summer, all participants and the pastor or supervisor submit a report and evaluation of the program.

Chapel Gathering in the Seminary participates in the annual celebration of the “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.” The service utilizes an Ecumenical order of Worship, designed this year by churches in Poland, reflecting from their own history of partition and victory over oppression. Chapel Gathering services held in Martin Chapel at Eastern Mennonite Seminary are planned by the Seminary community but open to all.

Students from Campus Ministries offer a  service of community lament on accumulation and find abundance with modern day reflections, scriptures and other readings led by a celebration worship team. This chapel theme was inspired by Dr. Walter Brueggemann, resource person for the recently held School for Leadership Training at the seminary.

Walter Brueggemann offers the third and final plenary address for the 2012 School for Leadership Training.  He considers the “sabbatic principle” as the practice and discipline whereby we may move from the narrative of scarcity and violence to the narrative of abundance and generosity. He considers the Sabbath, the year of release (Deuteronomy 15) and the Jubilee year (Leviticus 25) as counters to the restless 24/7 of our anxious society. Are your finances lined up with your faith? Ashley Hagelin  explores establishing good financial habits that relate to faith values.  Hagelin comes to us from LSS (Lutheran Social Services of MN), a partner organization of Everence.  In this chapel, she shares her story of student loan debt and encourages students to seek out resources for making better financial decisions during and after college.
