Many Thanks for the text : Aozora Bunko Transcript 正岡子規夜寒十句 　虚子を猿楽町に訪ひて夜に入りて帰途に就く。小川町に出づるに男女竪にも横にも歩行あるきて我車ややもすれば人に行き当らんとする様なり。彼等の半は両側の夜店をあさり行くにぞある。考へて見れば今宵は五十稲荷の縁日なり。我昔こゝらにさまよひし頃は見んとも思はざりし夜店なれど、此頃は斯かかる事さへなつかしく店々こまかに見もて行かんと思ふに実にせんなき身とはなりけり。古き雑誌書籍売る店、歯磨石鹸など売る店、根掛丈長など売る店の並びたる中に 縁日の古著屋多き夜寒かな 　それ等を離れて曲り角に小き店を出し四角な行燈を地に据ゑて片側につたやと書き片側に大きんつばと赤く書きたるも淋しげにあはれなり。 きんつばの行燈暗き夜寒かな 　淡路町に来れば古画を掛け古書を並べて此たぐひの店こゝの名物なり。我もいくたびかこゝに佇み幾冊　古書を得たりし処さすがに昔忍ばる。 贋筆を掛けて灯ともす夜寒かな 　講武所を横に曲るに角の鮓屋には人四五人も群れて少し横の方の柿店は戸板の上に僅ばかりの柿を並べたる婆の顔寒さうなり。 柿店の前を過ぎ行く夜寒かな 　御成道は車少く、三橋渡れば左右の飲食店建物いかめしけれど内は淋し気に見ゆ。 三階の灯を消しに行く夜寒かな 　上野に上る。風無けれど咽喉ひや／＼と覚えて心地善からず。 電気燈明るき山の夜寒かな 　暗き森の中をうつら／＼車に揺られて少し発熱の気味なり。新坂上 見下せば灯の無き町の夜寒かな 　新坂を下れば交番所の巡査今交代とおぼしく一人戸を明けて出づれば一人戸の内に入りぬ。我今の世に正しき者小学教員と巡査となりと思ひしに、此頃小学教員収賄の醜聞続々世間に聞えてたのもしきは巡査ばかりとなりし心細さ。薄給にして廉なるは君子たるに庶幾ちかし。上下皆濁りし世の中に我只此人を憐む。 交番の交代時の夜寒かな 　家々の門ラムプがあるは薔薇の花に映りあるは木の葉がくれにちらつく、此景根岸の特色なるべし。 樫の木の中に灯ともる夜寒かな 　家に帰りつく。 暗やみに我門敲く夜寒かな

As to living in the best way, this power is in the soul, if it be indifferent to things which are indifferent. And it will be indifferent, if it looks on each of these things separately and all together, and if it remembers that not one of them produces in us an opinion about itself, nor comes to us; but these things remain immovable, and it is we ourselves who produce the judgments about them, and, as we may say, write them in ourselves, it being in our power not to write them, and it being in our power, if perchance these judgments have imperceptibly got admission to our minds, to wipe them out; and if we remember also that such attention will only be for a short time, and then life will be at an end. Besides, what trouble is there at all in doing this? For if these things are according to nature, rejoice in them and they will be easy to thee: but if contrary to nature, seek what is conformable to thy own nature, and strive towards this, even if it bring no reputation; for every man is allowed to seek his own good.
