What better way to kick off the new year than with something uplifting. Deep House isn't technically 'my thing' but this set, which was originally going to be a bunch of chillout tracks, kept on turning up gems in the Deep House genre so I just ran with it. What you get is a '6am with the sun coming up over the water' kind of vibe that will get your bum a-wiggling. Finally I return to Phuture Frequency with my first mix since July. It took a while to get my decks out of storage following my travels then I needed to catch up on some of the releases I missed during 3 months abroad before getting back into the mixing (still a bit rough around the edges). . Kid Sublime is the alter ego of pianist, drummer, deejay and fulltime record producer Jacob Otten; someone I’ve been aware of for a number of years now, who’s always struck me as a true music lover. Us & Us: Lost In Ubiquity A Motion Mixtape for Phuture Frequency Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3 The seeds for this mix were planted after shopping at a dollar sale on 12" singles on the Ubiquity Records website and realizing just how much of the label's output I had in my collection. Honestly, the idea probably got started with the Shawn Lee episode that I did a few years back: almost every cut featured on that show was from the Ubiquity label. Time was overdue for me to put together a mix like this. Greyboy would have been my introduction to Ubiquity back in 1993. Their rare groove-based label Luv N' Haight got me familiar with Mighty Ryeders, the band responsible for "Evil Vibrations," which was sampled for De La Soul's "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'." That's not the only great song from th e Ryeders, as "Lovely" certainly proves. Kirk Degiorgio transforms into As One for some soulful techno on "Undefeated" and even Madlib stops by with his Yesterday's New Quintet project. And then there's the late, great Darondo, whose "Didn't I" will forever remain the quintessential soul jam. In terms of special guests, Jneiro Jarel shows up as all of Shape Of Broad Minds on "Eyes And Ears" and Muhsinah's vocals grace "One At A Time." The lovely Tiombe Lockhart is featured on "Stay With Me" while Rahel's voice skips and saunters across "Let It Out." You can thank Carlos Niño and his musical cronies for the wonderful additions to "The Healer Don't Break" and I believe Paul Fryer provides the vocals on Shawn Lee's achingly gorgeous "Meadow In The Summer." Throw in some clever covers alongside the original works across a variety of genres and there's a lot to get into, but it only provides a glimpse in to what Ubiquity has been up to for the past two decades. This mix isn't defined by any one genre, instead I've tried to weave a story through the vocals. There's a journey to be had here if you're willing to listen to what is being said. Sitting at about 160bpm, it's got some serious pace too. Definitely one you could throw some shapes too if you don't mind chilling out in between the hecticnessisity.
