I’ve not had a lot of time to mix recently so was glad to get back on the decks and roll out this latest selection. This mix kicks off with the lighter side of the Drum and Bass releases I’ve picked up of late before moving onto some heavier stuff halfway through. Highlights among the tunes featured include two tracks from the excellent “Substance” LP on Ingredients, three tracks from SCAR’s latest EP on Metalheadz, and some new bits from Need For Mirrors and HLZ, one in collaboration with Break released on his Symmetry label. Description: Starting off smooth and then putting a kick in the tail, this mix is all about those tunes that sit at the weird BPM of 160. Not slow enough to be truly considered Bass Music and not quite fast enough to be Drum & Bass, these tunes are a genre all of their own. Heavily influenced by Dub and Jungle and rinsed by the likes of Om Unit and Moresounds these abstracted tracks take you on a proper ride. In this mix there are a variety of new tunes and others that I picked up over the last few months but have so far neglected to feature in my mixes. Amongst the latter group are Tango and Lighterman’s “Fall Down” taken from the Spy Technologies 7 LP sampler on DSCI4, Law and Wheeler’s “Inevitability”, a free download from Repertoire, and a track from Mark System’s excellent “Final Approach” LP on Exit. In amongst the newer tracks are ones from Survival and Silent Witness, Threshold, and Friction vs Ulterior Motive. There’s also a tune from Future Cut on V Recordings which finally gets a full release after many years of waiting. Heading back into deeper house territory this month with a nod to the early 90s. A lot of these tracks have that awesome old-school rave vibe to them. Punching hard with big bass kicks and classic female vocals, I just love this sound. There are some weird ones in here too like Blackdown's - Wicked Vibez (Horsepower OG Remix) that feature MC GQ from AWOL MCing like only he can, but over a four to the floor house beat. Or the Benton Remix of Dusky's - Yahoo which takes the track and gives it an Amen break Drumstep twist. This was a whole heap of fun to mix and I hope that comes through when listening. This mix gets harder as it goes on building until it reaches a tech-fuelled crescendo. In amongst the selection is a track taken from the sampler for DLR’s “Seeing Sounds” LP on Dispatch, a couple from Need For Mirrors, two from Dayni’s “Criminal Jazz” EP for Dutty Audio and the obligatory Renegade Hardware release. For my second mix in a row there’s also a track by Current Value who’s been delivering some excellent releases of late. We are heading deep down this month with a Detroit and Chicago inspired Techno fest. When it comes down to it, the roots of all electronic dance music is in the original Techno sound. Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson all blazed a trail that lead to where we are today. What I find amazing is that producers are still finding innovative variations on the Techno theme to this very day - pumping out tracks that totally lock you into a groove the way that only good Techno can. I don't profess to be a Techno aficionado by any stretch, but I know what I love. This bunch of tunes still give me that same feeling I got 20+ years ago when I heard that first 4:4 thump. We are heading deep, deep down dub street this month on the Down Low. Dubstep, Dub and Trap is the flavour of the day and even though it's a 140bpm ride the seat is well and truly kicked back in this ride. A few highlights to keep an ear out for are new joints from the criminally underrated Atlantic Connection. His track Go, featuring Tunde Olaniran, is a vocal masterpiece and make his new LP Human worthy of buying on site. DFRNT's Metafiction EP is another one worth snapping up, with his tunes Tripped and Dark Jazz both making the grade here. And last, but not least, Melbourne's Trap master Spenda C gets another rinsing because he has too many great free tunes not to rinse. Blaze up, stretch out and let the dub-nicity take you away. Us & Us: Moods And Whims A Motion Mixtape for Phuture Frequency Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3 This mix was recorded on January 10, 2015 in one take. The Herbie Hancock PSA at the beginning was added in afterwards. It begins and ends on a jazz note: the spiritual flight of South Africa's own Tumi Mogorosi to start while closing with the Afrobeat slow burn of The Shaolin Afronauts (which has to be one of the best band names ever). Lots of different places and spaces were visited in between. There's the psychedelic rock of Relay, the electronic pop perfection of Nautic, the quirky digital funk of Lavender Worm and Lil Texas, and a rare moment of poignancy from Negativland. Fitzroy North and Thrupence are both given a chance to mess with an old Son House cut for their respective pieces while Memotone & Soosh turn in a cut that's both beaut iful and fierce all at once. Unconventional hymnal additions are courtesy of Clarence Fountain's take on an old gospel standard and Daru Jones honoring the late, great Andrae Crouch beat flip style. (Keep in mind that Daru's tribute was released just over three years before brother Crouch was called home.) Hopefully this mix will serve you well during the more introspective and contemplative moments of your life or simply make for good chill out music when you need it most. Recorded on New Years Day this is a 2 hour mix looking back at just a small number of the Drum & Bass tracks released in 2014. There are plenty of bits from the labels that feature regularly in my mixes; Dispatch, Metalheadz and Renegade Hardware. There are also tunes on labels such as Machinist Music and Quarantine which although less prolific always deliver tracks of the highest standard. I enjoyed recording the mix and hope it makes for good listening.
