In May 2007, one family embarked on a five month road trip. A two year old, a pregnant mother, a dog, a dad and a camper van. This isn't a particularly new concept; surfers have been doing it for years. The bread and butter road trip. No boat charters, internet swell predictions or expensive budgets, just a car, some boards and a plan. Find out the stories of these surfers, their lives, and why they travel and surf?

In the 1980's Newport Beach, California spawned a new era of high performance surfing and entrepreneurship, establishing Orange County as the focal point of the surf industry and a worldwide influencer of youth culture. This group of surfers came from different backgrounds and interests, bonded in their surfing and exploded on the scene, creating a unique look and revolutionary style that paralleled changes in music, culture and the innovation of young surf companies such as Quiksilver, Stussy, Schroff, Rip Curl, McCoy and Wave Tools. Flashy wetsuits, colorful surfboards, and a new wave attitude created a surfing Mecca that was to impact the surfing community around the world and give rise to a global industry. Photographers, surfers, surfboard shapers, magazines and clothing companies all came together to create this movement, which was focused on a one hundred yard stretch of sand known as ECHO BEACH.

Tom's Creation Plantation is a surf movie about making and riding alaia surfboards. The movie takes us to Queensland, Australia, where renowned alaia shaper Tom Wegener demonstrates the fine details in building the ancient (and environmentally sound) surfboard. Then we get to see the fruits of his labor in action as the local rippers ride the skinny finless creations.

In the early 1970s, Australian chargers Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns, and Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew landed in Oahu with something to prove. Hawaii was seen as the center of the surfing universe and the brash Aussies sought to shake things up. Along with South Africans Shaun and Michael Tomson, the crew ripped apart legendary breaks like Pipeline and Waimea with radical innovations and bravery that bordered on insanity. Combining classic footage and revealing modern-day interviews, Bustin' Down the Door exposes the soul of this revolutionary period in a way few surf films can. The ground-breaking talents of MR and Co. are rightfully lauded for helping to build the concept of professional surfing, yet no excuses are offered for the reckless arrogance that helped ignite a powder keg of cultural pride on the North Shore. The self-promoting Australians were not shy about their talents, but by the time Cairns declared that "Aloha is dead" during the summer of '75, competitive banter had dangerously escalated beyond the waves. But what the group lacked in diplomacy, they made up for in determination, as their shared desire to be the best gave rise to a new era of surfing.

As the primary cinematographer for Dangvu Media, Matt gained experience shooting both land and water during the production of The Faulkland Frontier and many others. Matt's been doing his own thing for several years now, popping up as the shooter of choice for Billabong's ultra-secret missions, Surfline's clandestine forays into Baja and most recently, the initial river surfing expedition to China.
