The Surfer's Journal Biographies : Robert August and Wingnut - trailer | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 0:43

Having learned the lifestyle from surf legend father, Blackie , Robert August went on to become one of the most recognizable figures in the surf world via his starring role in The Endless Summer. August rode his Hap Jacobs log to high acclaim throughout the 60s, and his loose-limbed, controlled style became a benchmark of California Cool. Now familiar to a whole new generation thanks to Endless Summer 2 (ESII), August runs a thriving surfboard company, splitting his time between Huntington Beach and Costa Rica.Wingnut is cast from the same mold. Always up for a good time, his infectious demeanor and legit-by-any-measure surfing skills are a good matchup with August, who happens to be his traveling partner. Learning to surf on a heavy longboard in the late-80s, no less Weaver became one of the coast's finest exemplars of classic noseriding. It came as no surprise that he was picked for a role in Endless Summer II, and with Pat O'Connel as a foil, he surfed his way into theatres around the globe. Join us as we track the careers of two of surfing's most well-rounded participants.

The Surfer's Journal Biographies : Shaun Tomson and Mark Richards - trailer | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 1:21

As top guns of the Free Ride generation- the peak of 1970s surfing- Shaun Tomson of South Africa and Mark Richards from Australia ushered in a new level of performance and international flair during the sport's hard-fought battle to establish professional surfing as a viable life path. As a world champion, Tomson was an articulate, handsome tube rider who attracted the first hoards of autograph-seeking teenyboppers in the sport's history. MR, not quite the sex symbol type, was a mild-mannered, deeply respected and popular figure whose surfing choreography contrasted rakish carves and glides. While their respective styles couldn't have been more divergent and they each took their talents to the top of their sport, it was their free surfing that blew the gallery away. Few surfers who were present in 1976 will forget Shaun's backside bravado at Pipe, MR's mach-3 runs at Honolua Bay, or their insane, two-in-the-tube shack at Off-The-Wall. This volume of Journal Biographies provides an in-dept look at these two remarkable surfers.

The Surfer's Journal Biographies : Joel Tudor and Nat Young - trailer | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 1:29

What might appear an unlikely biographical pairing is in fact the study of an audacious mentor and his equally audacious pupil. Bound by friendship, philosophy, and choice of equipment, 22-ear-old Joel Tudor and 50-omething Nat Young have become spokesmen for the surfing tribe and frequent travel-mates. While Nat was key in bringing about the shortboard revolution in the 60s, he remains one of longboard surfing's purest exponents. Joel Tudor represents the other side of the coin. Residing at the top of longboarding's late 20th century revival, Joel also became a talented shortboarder at such indicator breaks as Pipeline and Cloudbreak. So here is Nat Young, brilliant, outspoken, an Australian national hero who could likely descibe himself as the greatest surfer ever and be not far wrong. Then there's the Tudor paradox, a prodigy's passion for surfing's past as applied to the now. Although separated in age by three decades, these two share a common drive to push the boundaries of modern surfing.

The Surfer's Journal Biographies : Gerry Lopez and Barry Kanaiaupuni - trailer | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 1:28

Hawaiian surfers Gerry Lopez and Barry Kanaiaupuni represent the yin and yang of wave riding. Lopez, the elegant tube rider famous for his slouched, ultra-cool statements at Pipeline, has become a timeless icon for the soul of surfing. His very name has become a sort of shorthand for surfing style. Never considered a particularly competitive man, he has nonetheless maintained a slot in that ultimate: the Pipe lineup. His explorations in Indonesia have inspired two generations of adventure travelers in the unending quest for hidden perfection. Barry Kanaiaupuni or BK to just about everyone, has always had his feet planted on the pillars of speed and power. Famed for his Sunset Beach speed runs on skinny, javelin-like boards, BK artfully transitioned from longboard stylist to prototypical North Shore power merchant. This edition of The Surfer's Journal lets us study two of the sport's most enduring and revered surfers, including their finest rides at their favorite waves.

 Litmus - trailer | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2:22

Nominated in five categories at the 1998 Surfer Video Awards, including Best Video. "I knew I wanted to make Litmus, though I'm still not really sure why. It still has a purity about it, like the simple act surfing with a friend or playing a song in a room to yourself" says Andrew Kidman. "One of my favourite sequences in 'Litmus' is the one with Tom Curren. He surfs in his home waters to his own guitar playing -guitar playing we recorded during a backyard jam in Victoria. I think it's a really unique and special thing, and really shows off what a gifted human Tom is." -ndrew Kidman "I wish that when they asked us: 'What is surfing?' I would have said it's a spiritual activity, and no just a sport, because that's what put us on the wrong track." -Nat Young, 1966 World Surfing Champion "One of the most fascinating surf videos to come along in quite a while. Anyone with half a brain or taste for something different will enjoy." -en Marcus, Surfer Magazine "The Riders, the boards, the places, the ruminations...Litmus was easily the finest srf film of it's decade." -cott Hulet, The Surfer's Journal WARNING: THIS FILM CONTAINS DRUG SCENES AND EXPLICIT LANGUAGE. PARENTAL GUIDANCE ADVISED.

 Surfing Dolphins - trailer | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 2:52

Our world is one of air and water, theirs one of water and air. As mammals, we went our separate ways millions of years ago. But that hasn't stopped us from staying in touch. After all, we share the same liquid playground. Anyone who has been in the ocean when dolphins are around can't help feeling these are sentient beings supremely aware of us--especially when we see them catching waves. In his 20 minute film, Surfing Dolphins, filmmaker Greg Huglin crosses the liquid line that separates us from them. It's a stunning labor of love--fourteen years in the making--with visuals that will elicit gasps of wonder and awe. If ever there was a case for them and us occupying separate but parallel worlds, this film is it. Proof positive dolphins love to catch waves, and can surf over-under-in-and-around those waves in a manner we can only dream of. That's how the film makes us feel at times, as if we're watching images from an underwater dream. From the film's beginning, when dolphins rise to the surface to play and surf at a remote bay in South Africa, we're clearly witnessing one of the seven wonders of the natural world. In wave after wave, Greg captures their freewheeling expression sessions performed in perfect synchronicity. The energy is palpable. Dolphins know how to have fun! Greg's tightly-framed ultra slow motion footage zeros in on our aquatic brethren surfing inside and performing graceful aerial arcs out the backs of waves. You don't have to be a surfer to appreciate this film, but only a surfer could have made it this way. There's a sense of kinship with our one species-removed cetacean cousins. We're connected by a shared understanding of the nuances of timing and positioning in riding the energy. The short running time makes Surfing Dolphins an ideal choice for showings at aquariums and ocean institutes. Owning this film is a must for anyone's essential collection.
