Summary: Recovery, whether it is from substance abuse or a mental illness, or both requires a treatment plan, which in many cases is as effective as treatments for other chronic illnesses. “One Hour AT A Time” will increase awareness about recovery and decrease the discrimination against individuals in the recovery process. Host Mary Woods, will help people understand the recovery of adults and families living with co-occurring substance use disorders and psychotic and/or affective illness over the course of a lifetime. Helping individuals develop the skills and knowledge they need to take personal responsibility for their health and supporting individuals in their efforts to get on with life beyond illness has been Mary’s mission and she now brings that mission to the airwaves. Linehan specifically to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is based largely in behaviorist theory with cognitive elements. DBT also incorporates mindfulness practice. There are two essential parts of DBT: 1. Individual: in which weekly issues are discussed & recorded on diary cards. The therapist and client work towards improving skill use; 2. Group: Specific skills are learned and practiced: core mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance. Join us in discussing the effect of trauma and substance use disorders on individuals and families. Dr. Boriskin began working with Vietnam veterans in 1979, just when PTSD entered the professional and general vocabulary. Clinical Director of one of the first Vet Centers, he quickly developed an expertise in addictive disorders. He transitioned to private practice in Florida in 1986, working with a wide range of trauma survivors, particularly sexual abuse survivors. He developed one of the earliest extended residential treatment programs and in 1999 he co-founded Advanced Recovery Center in Delray Beach, Florida. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified addiction specialist and author of PTSD and Addiction: A Practical Guide for Clinicians and Counselors, and co-author of At Wit’s End- What Families Need to Know When A Loved One is Diagnosed with Addiction and Mental Illness.
