Audio Blog #22 - Brazilian Binge During Christmas | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:10

Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101! Don't forget to stop by PortuguesePod101.com for more great Portuguese Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Christmas The Portuguese colonized Brazil, and therefore, the predominant religion in the country is Catholic. Thus, Brazilians value Christmas very much when they get together, usually with their family, to spend the holiday that represents the birth of Jesus Christ. The celebration begins on the evening of December 24, when it is Christmas dinner. A major concern of Brazilians is that food can never be lacking in any kind of celebration. The abundance of food for the Brazilians impresses the foreigners who come to Brazil a lot. There is usually a fish and seafood dish and other of meat (turkey, shank, or tender mainly), and accompaniments, such as farofa, rice, and salada de maionese. The dessert table is always full of fruits, usually seasonal fruits, such as peaches, plums, grapes, and melons, and sweets such as a traditional French toast, mousses, pies, pave, and panettone. But the party does not end with dinner on Christmas Eve, because the next day all the people meet again to continue the binge on Christmas lunch. Another symbol of Christmas that you cannot miss is the Christmas tree in Brazilian houses. Their date for set up is November 30, and on January 6, the day of the Three Wise Men, it's time to stow away all the arrangements for the following year. This tree represents life, and we decorate with arrangements, decorations, and blinking lights. But the great looks of the night of the twenty-fourth is Santa Claus for children - an old man with a white beard and red suit that gives presents to all children, especially those who behaved well during the year. Among adults, the tradition of exchanging gifts is very common, moving a large consumer market during Christmastime. --------------------------- Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101!
