Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Walpurgis Night Walpurgis Night is a holiday that is celebrated in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Germany. Walpurgis Night is celebrated on the 30th of April or the 1st of May. Walpurgis Night is based on the pagan holiday that formerly existed in Germany. But later it was connected to the cult of Saint Walpurga who became a saint on the 1st of May. This cult resisted evil powers and witchcraft. It was believed that on Walpurgis Night, witches rode on broomsticks or goats to old places of sacrifice where they did mischievous things with the devil. To scare away the witches and spirits the people made a racket and lit fires on the heights. This is the Christian explanation for the old pagan spring customs. In Sweden we celebrate Walpurgis Night by lighting a bonfire and setting off fireworks and firecrackers. Most people celebrate Walpurgis Night but they don't connect it to the Saint Walpurga. In the pagan times Walpurgis Night was connected to the dead. It was thought that the border between the living and the dead was weakest on this night. From the beginning, the holiday was a symbol for spring and light. Back then, bonfires weren't lit to scare witches, but to burn away the old and make way for the new. Walpurgis Night is also a big holiday for both Finland's and Sweden's colleges and universities. On the 30th of April the students put on their graduation hat or summer hat. It is celebrated differently at different universities, but usually it's a big festival with orchestras, games, competitions, and different performances. Walpurgis is nowadays famous for being the day teenagers drink the most alcohol. In 2009 the Swedish magazine "Aftonbladet" did a test and it was shown that 8 out of 10 teenagers were planing on going out to drink alcohol on Walpurgis Night. --------------------------- Learn Swedish with SwedishPo [...]
