Learn Hebrew with HebrewPod101.com! Your well-meaning friend wants to take you back out on horseback today before you return home. But today's agenda is bird watching. He believes this is a great way to see the country while relaxing and unwinding for the day. But you have a trick up your sleeve this time. Don't forget to stop by HebrewPod101.com for more great Hebrew Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- יעקב שבתאי יעקב שבתאי נולד בעיר תל-אביב בשנת 1934, ונודע כסופר ישראלי שכתב רומנים רבים, מחזות וגם היה מתרגם. כמו מרבית הבחורים הצעירים שחיו בפלסטינה, הוא שירת בצבא. לאחר סיום שירותו הצטרף לקיבוץ מרחביה, ובשנת 1967 חזר לעיר מולדתו, תל-אביב. בשנת 1964 פרסם את ספרו הראשון, ספר ילדים בשם "המסע המופלא של הקרפד." מאותו יום והלאה, פרחה הקריירה שלו והוא פרסם עוד כתבים רבים, כולל מחזה בשם "נמר חברבורות" וספרים אחרים דוגמת אוסף הסיפורים הקצרים הידוע כ"הדוד פרץ ממריא" ואת "סוף דבר." היצירה הידועה ביותר שלו היא "זיכרון דברים," הסיפורת הראשונה שנכתבה בשפת המקום העברית הנכונה. Like most young men who lived in Palestine, he served in the military. After completing his tour of duty he joined the kibbutz Merhavia, and in 1967 he went back to his hometown of Tel Aviv. In 1964 he published his first book, a children's book called The Wondrous Journey of the Toad. From that point on, his career blossomed and he published many other writings, including a play titled The Spotted Tiger and other books, such as the collection of short stories known as Uncle Peretz Takes Off and Past Perfect. What he is best known for is Past Continuous (Zikhron Devarim), the very first fiction book written in the true vernacular of Hebrew. Past Continuous was first published in the year 1977, and in 1985 it was translated and published in English. It was well received internationally, especially by Gabriel Josipovici, a critic for The Independent who determined it to be one of the greatest novels of the 1980s and even compared it to the novel In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. Other works by Shabtai that have been translated into English include Past Perfect and Uncle Peretz Takes Off. Shabtai received the honor of being placed at the 173rd spot on the list of the Greatest Israelis of all Time, a poll conducted in 2005 by Ynet, a news website in Israel.
